Chapter 2
The sterile conference room at Nexus Dynamics felt like a cage. Three months. Three months of hell. And now, Mark was here, sitting across the polished table from her, looking every bit the triumphant king. Chloe sat beside him, clinging to his arm, her expression a perfect blend of pity and concern.
"Ava, you look… tired," Mark said, his tone dripping with false sympathy.
Tired didn't begin to cover it. The CEO of Nexus, Damon Blackwood, had taken Mark' s instructions to heart. He' d given her impossible deadlines, buried her in mountains of meaningless paperwork, and subjected her to daily verbal abuse in front of her new colleagues. He' d tried to break her spirit, to grind her down until nothing was left.
"I' m here to discuss the terms of our divorce," he continued, sliding a thin folder across the table. "It' s a very generous offer, considering the circumstances."
Ava didn' t open it. She just stared at him, her face a blank mask.
"You get to keep your maiden name, of course. I can' t have you dragging the Thompson name through the mud any further," he said with a dismissive wave of his hand. "And as for assets… well, given the damage you did to my company' s reputation, you should be paying me."
Chloe made a small, sad noise. "Mark, don' t be so harsh. It' s not her fault she couldn' t handle the pressure."
Ava' s mind flashed back to the first week at Nexus. Damon Blackwood had called her into his office. He was a large, imposing man with a cruel smile.
"So you' re the famous Ava Miller," he' d sneered, leaning back in his chair. "Mark Thompson tells me you have some… idealistic notions about technology. We' re going to cure you of that here. Your first project is to find a way to bypass the data privacy laws in Europe. I want a proposal on my desk by morning."
It was an impossible, and illegal, task. She' d worked for forty-eight hours straight, fueled by nothing but bitter coffee and sheer stubbornness, and produced a detailed report on why his plan would lead to catastrophic legal and financial consequences.
He' d glanced at the first page and thrown the entire report in the trash.
"I asked for a solution, not a lecture," he had roared, his face turning red. "Do it again. And this time, give me what I want."
That was just the beginning. She was ostracized by her colleagues, who saw her as a threat or a fool. She ate lunch alone at her desk. She was the first one in the office and the last one to leave. The nights were a blur of exhaustion and despair, sleeping for a few fitful hours on a cheap sofa in a tiny apartment she could barely afford. Her savings were dwindling. Mark had frozen all their joint accounts the day she left.
She remembered one night, staring at her reflection in the dark window of her office, seeing a hollowed-out stranger staring back. Her hair was limp, dark circles shadowed her eyes, and she had lost so much weight that her clothes hung off her frame. She looked broken. And in that moment, she was. The sheer, unending cruelty of it all had crushed something inside her.
Now, sitting in this conference room, she felt a flicker of that same despair. But it was different. It was colder now, harder. The pain had been burned away, leaving something else in its place. Scorn.
She looked at Mark, at his perfectly tailored suit and his arrogant expression, and she felt nothing but contempt. He was a fool. A charismatic, handsome, successful fool, but a fool nonetheless. He had no idea what he had thrown away. He had no idea what was coming.
Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through her side. Chloe' s personal assistant, a smug young woman named Jessica, had "accidentally" bumped into her as they entered the room, shoving her hard against the doorframe. It was the same spot Damon Blackwood' s security guard had bruised when he' d roughly escorted her out of a meeting she wasn' t "authorized" to attend.
Jessica now stood behind Chloe' s chair, a smirk playing on her lips. She leaned down and pretended to pick up a pen she had dropped, and as she straightened up, she kicked Ava' s chair hard. The jolt sent another wave of pain through Ava' s bruised ribs.
Chloe gasped, feigning shock. "Oh, Jessica, be careful! Ava is so fragile right now."
The condescension was thick enough to choke on. Mark just watched, a bored expression on his face, as if he were watching a mildly amusing play. He didn't care. This was all part of the show, part of her punishment.
Ava looked down at her hands, clenched into tight fists in her lap. She could feel the tremors running through them, a mixture of pain and pure, undiluted rage. She had been silent for months, enduring every humiliation, every act of cruelty, with a stoic calm that infuriated her tormentors. But this, here, now, was too much.
She looked up, meeting Jessica' s smug gaze.
"Get your hands off my chair," Ava said, her voice low and dangerous, cutting through the room' s tense silence.
Jessica just giggled. "Or what? You' ll write an ethics complaint about me?"
Ava' s eyes narrowed. The silence was gone. The calm was broken.
"I said," she repeated, her voice rising with a strength she hadn' t felt in months, "get your hands off me, you worthless little sycophant."
The room went completely still. Chloe' s fake smile faltered. Mark' s bored expression sharpened into one of surprise, and then anger. For the first time in a long time, Ava Thompson was fighting back.
