Chapter 1
Sarah Miller sat across from Dr. Anya Sharma, her old professor.
The university office felt small, comforting.
Outside, New York City buzzed, a world away from this quiet space.
Sarah twisted the engagement ring on her finger, a massive diamond from Ethan Reed, tech mogul, her fiancé of ten years.
"They want me to disappear, Anya," Sarah said, her voice low.
"The Federal Identity Relocation Service."
Dr. Sharma watched her, eyes kind but serious.
"They contacted you?"
Sarah nodded. "A discreet meeting. New life, new name. Everything erased."
Anya leaned forward. "And what did you tell them?"
"I told them I'd think about it."
But Sarah knew. She had been thinking about it for a month, ever since the day her world cracked.
Ethan. Ethan and Chloe Vance, his executive assistant.
The memory was a raw, open wound.
Chloe had guided her, a small smile on her face, to the one-way observation window.
"Mr. Reed wanted you to see the new office layout, Ms. Miller. He's just finishing up."
Finishing up.
Sarah saw Ethan, her Ethan, the man who proposed with tears in his eyes, who swore eternal devotion.
He was with Chloe in his penthouse office.
Not discussing layouts.
Their actions were graphic, demeaning. Chloe, looking directly at where she knew the observation window was, a triumphant smirk on her face. Ethan, lost in the act, oblivious.
The image burned into Sarah's mind.
Ten years of love, a decade of public adoration, shattered in minutes.
"Why would FIRS approach you, Sarah?" Anya asked gently, pulling her from the memory.
"They said… they said I fit a certain profile. Skills from my investigative work. A need for discretion."
Sarah looked down at her hands. "They said it was a chance for a clean break."
A clean break from a life that had become a lie.
Her integrity, the core of her being, felt violated.
Ethan, the man she was supposed to marry in a "wedding of the decade," was a stranger.
"This is an extreme step, Sarah," Dr. Sharma said. "To erase Sarah Miller completely."
"I know," Sarah whispered. "But Sarah Miller's life… it feels like a fraud."
The city outside was preparing for a fairy tale. Billboards of her and Ethan, their "perfect love" story splashed everywhere.
She thought of his proposal, the heartfelt words, the promises. All poison now.
"They offer complete support," Sarah continued, her voice hardening. "A new identity. Alex Parker. A research fellowship."
Anya nodded slowly. "If this is what you need, Sarah, I understand. You are strong. You will find your way."
Dr. Sharma had ties, old ones, to government programs. She knew how these things worked.
"I need to escape him, Anya. The public spectacle. The private hell."
The decision was made the moment she saw him with Chloe.
The FIRS offer was a lifeline she hadn't known she needed.
"I'm going to do it," Sarah said, meeting Anya's gaze.
"I'm going to become Alex Parker."
Her mentor simply nodded. "Then let's discuss how."
