Chapter 2 Enemies in the Family
Elena's eyes widened as Daniel Hartman stood before her, his presence both intimidating and overwhelming. His cold gaze pierced through her as if trying to unravel her very being, and the tension in the room thickened with every passing second.
"I-uh," she stammered, trying to find her voice, "I didn't know your father...I don't know why I'm here either."
Daniel scoffed, folding his arms across his chest. He didn't bother to hide his disdain. "So you just magically appeared on my father's will as his sole heir, inheriting everything that should've gone to me and the rest of the family? Convenient, isn't it?"
Elena's heart pounded in her chest. The accusation in his tone felt like a slap. She glanced at Olivia, hoping for some guidance, but the attorney simply watched the exchange, her expression neutral.
"I swear, I don't know anything about this," Elena said, her voice trembling. "I received a letter. That's all I know. I never even heard of Edward Hartman until yesterday."
Daniel's eyes narrowed. "That's hard to believe. Especially considering my father was a very careful man. He didn't do anything without a reason."
Elena was about to respond, but Olivia cleared her throat, interrupting the rising tension. "Mr. Hartman, I understand your concerns, but the will is legally binding. I can assure you, there's no mistake. Your father named Ms. Johnson as his heir, and his decision stands."
Daniel's jaw clenched, and for a moment, Elena thought he might argue. But instead, he turned his back to them, walking over to the massive window that overlooked the sprawling estate. His shoulders were rigid, his fists tight.
"This isn't over," he muttered, barely loud enough for her to hear.
Elena didn't know what to say. She felt out of place, like a pawn in a game she hadn't agreed to play. Why had Edward Hartman left her everything? What could possibly connect her to a man of such immense wealth? The questions rattled around in her mind, unanswered and overwhelming.
Daniel turned to face her again, this time with a smirk that made her stomach twist. "You may have the papers, but don't think for a second that you can waltz into this family and take what isn't yours. You'll regret it."
Before she could respond, Daniel stormed out of the room, leaving the door swinging behind him. The silence that followed was deafening. Elena's hands trembled slightly, and she placed them in her lap, trying to steady herself.
Olivia, sensing her unease, offered a small, understanding smile. "It's a lot to take in, I know. Daniel is...adjusting."
"Adjusting?" Elena echoed, her voice shaking with a mix of fear and confusion. "He looked like he wanted to tear my head off. What's going on here?"
Olivia sighed, leaning forward slightly. "Edward Hartman was a complex man. He had his reasons for everything he did, though he was often very private about his personal affairs. But Daniel has worked alongside his father for years, expecting to one day take over the family business. This...change in the will has obviously blindsided him."
Elena bit her lip, trying to wrap her head around the situation. She felt trapped, caught between a family's legacy and their simmering resentment.
"So what do I do now?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm not cut out for this. I don't even understand what's going on."
Olivia stood and walked around the desk, placing a gentle hand on Elena's shoulder. "Take it one step at a time. I'm here to help you navigate this. The first thing you need to do is move into the estate. There's a lot to learn about the Hartman empire, and you'll need to be prepared for what's coming."
Elena blinked. "Move in? Here?"
Olivia nodded. "It's important that you're present. The will stipulates that you must live at the estate for at least one year to fully inherit the fortune. It's part of the terms."
"A year?" Elena's voice faltered. "I have a life, a job-I can't just leave everything behind."
"The diner?" Olivia asked gently. "I understand it's been your livelihood, but this is a chance to start a new life. You can't afford to hesitate. There's more at stake here than just money. The Hartman legacy is powerful, and there are people who will want to take it from you if they can. You need to be ready."
Elena looked down at her hands, her mind spinning. Could she really walk away from everything she knew and embrace this new world? It felt impossible, but at the same time, she couldn't ignore the weight of what she had stumbled into. This was bigger than her, and somehow, for reasons she didn't yet understand, she had been chosen for it.
"Okay," she said quietly. "I'll do it. I'll move in."
Olivia smiled approvingly. "Good. I'll have the staff prepare a room for you."
As Olivia stood to leave, Elena's mind raced with questions. "Wait," she said suddenly. "Do you know why Mr. Hartman chose me? I mean, there must be some explanation, right?"
Olivia's smile faded slightly, and for the first time, Elena saw a flicker of uncertainty in her eyes. "I'm afraid I don't have the answer to that. Edward was a private man. He didn't share the details of his decision with anyone, not even me. But I'm sure, in time, you'll uncover the truth."
Elena wasn't convinced. Something about this felt wrong. Why would a man she had never met leave her everything? And why did Olivia seem so calm about it, as though this wasn't completely insane?
But before she could ask anything else, Olivia excused herself, leaving Elena alone in the vast office.
The next few hours passed in a blur. The estate's staff-distant, professional, and oddly silent-helped her settle into her new room, a lavish suite that felt more like a hotel than a home. She unpacked the few belongings she had brought, feeling completely out of place in such luxury.
As the sun began to set, Elena wandered the halls, her thoughts heavy. The mansion was beautiful but eerily quiet, and she couldn't shake the feeling that she didn't belong. She passed by portraits of the Hartman family, their faces frozen in time, watching her as if they knew she was an outsider.
Eventually, she found herself standing in front of Edward Hartman's office again. The door was slightly ajar, and a strange sense of curiosity pulled her inside. The room was just as it had been earlier-grand, intimidating, and filled with the scent of leather and wood polish.
She walked over to the large desk, her fingers tracing the surface as she tried to imagine the man who had worked here. What kind of person was Edward Hartman? Why had he chosen her, of all people?
Her gaze fell on a small locked drawer in the desk. It seemed out of place among the neatly organized files and papers. Intrigued, she knelt down and examined it closer. The lock was old-fashioned, the kind that required a small key. A key she didn't have.
Just as she was about to stand up, something caught her eye. A glint of metal near the edge of the desk. She reached for it, her heart racing, and pulled out a tiny, ornate key hidden underneath the desk's surface.
Elena's pulse quickened as she fit the key into the lock, her hands trembling. With a soft click, the drawer slid open, revealing a single object inside: a faded, yellowing letter addressed to her in Edward Hartman's handwriting.
Her heart nearly stopped.
How had he known her? Why would he write to her? Her fingers shook as she lifted the letter from the drawer, her breath catching in her throat.
She unfolded the paper carefully, the words blurry at first, but as she focused, the message became clear:
"Elena, by the time you read this, many questions will have crossed your mind. I have the answers you seek, but there are things you must discover on your own first. Trust no one-not even those closest to you. Everything I did was for a reason, but not everyone will agree. Be careful, and above all, protect what I've left in your hands. Your life depends on it."
Elena's blood ran cold as she read the final line over and over again. Protect what I've left in your hands. Trust no one. What did that even mean?
Her hands shook as she refolded the letter and slipped it into her pocket, her mind racing with fear and confusion.
Suddenly, a creak echoed from behind her. Elena spun around to see the shadow of someone standing in the doorway.
Before she could react, the figure stepped forward, and the low, familiar voice sent chills down her spine.
"You shouldn't be in here," Daniel Hartman said, his expression unreadable. "And you definitely shouldn't have found that letter."
