Chapter 3 The Letter and the Lie

Elena’s pulse quickened as Daniel stepped into the office, his eyes narrowing on her. The dim light from the setting sun cast eerie shadows across his sharp features, and his presence made the room feel smaller, suffocating.

"I didn't know... I wasn’t trying to snoop," Elena stammered, taking a step back. Her fingers instinctively clutched the letter in her pocket. Every word Edward Hartman had written still burned in her mind: “Trust no one—not even those closest to you.”

Daniel’s gaze shifted from her face to the drawer she had just unlocked. His expression darkened, and for a moment, she thought he might explode with anger.

“You shouldn’t be here at all,” Daniel said, his voice calm but laced with menace. “What makes you think you can walk into my father’s office and go through his things like you own the place?”

“I didn’t mean to... I just—” she started, but he cut her off.

“You just what? Found something you weren’t supposed to?” Daniel took another step forward, his eyes cold and calculating. “What did you find in that drawer, Elena?”

Her heart pounded in her chest. She had no idea how much Daniel knew or if he had been watching her. But one thing was certain: the warning in Edward’s letter was clear. She couldn’t trust him.

“Nothing,” she lied, her voice betraying her. “There was nothing in there.”

Daniel’s gaze lingered on her face, studying her every movement, and Elena could tell he didn’t believe her. He stepped closer, his towering frame casting a long shadow over her, and for a moment, she feared what he might do next.

“I don’t like liars,” he said quietly, his voice dangerously low. “So I’ll ask you again—what did you find?”

Before Elena could answer, a voice interrupted the tense standoff. Olivia stood in the doorway, her expression calm but her eyes sharp. “Mr. Hartman, is there a problem?”

Daniel didn’t take his eyes off Elena, but his posture stiffened. After a beat, he stepped back, his icy glare softening slightly. “No problem, Ms. Martins. I was just reminding our guest of her place in this house.”

Elena exhaled, relieved to have Olivia intervene, but she couldn’t ignore the way Daniel’s words felt like a veiled threat. He gave her one last look, full of unspoken warning, before brushing past Olivia and leaving the room.

For a moment, the silence between Elena and Olivia was thick, charged with tension.

“Are you all right?” Olivia asked, her voice gentle now. “I’m sorry about Daniel. He’s... still processing everything.”

Elena nodded, but the knot in her stomach didn’t ease. “Yeah, I’m fine. But... why does he hate me so much? I didn’t ask for any of this.”

Olivia sighed, stepping further into the office and closing the door behind her. “It’s not personal, Elena. Daniel has always been very close to his father’s business, and this will has thrown his world off balance. It will take time for him to come to terms with what’s happened.”

“But why me?” Elena blurted out, the frustration bubbling to the surface. “Why would Edward Hartman leave everything to someone he never met? There has to be a reason, right?”

Olivia’s gaze softened with sympathy. “I wish I had answers for you. Edward was a very private man, even with his closest colleagues. I don’t know the full extent of his reasons, but I do know this—there’s more to his decision than just wealth. He trusted you with something much bigger.”

Elena swallowed hard. Olivia’s words felt like a weight pressing down on her, and the more she thought about the letter hidden in her pocket, the more she realized that she was in way over her head.

“What do I do now?” Elena asked, her voice small. “I’m not cut out for this.”

“You take it one step at a time,” Olivia said gently. “I’m here to help you, and we’ll figure it out together.”

Elena wanted to believe her, but the ominous warning in Edward’s letter echoed in her mind. Trust no one. Could she really trust Olivia? Could she trust anyone in this house?

“Get some rest tonight,” Olivia continued, her voice steady. “Tomorrow, we’ll start going over the details of the estate and the business. There’s a lot to learn, but I’ll be with you every step of the way.”

Elena nodded absently, her thoughts still tangled in a web of confusion and fear. Olivia offered her a small, reassuring smile before turning to leave, her heels clicking softly on the polished floor.

As soon as Olivia left the room, Elena exhaled deeply, trying to steady her nerves. She glanced at the locked drawer, now open, and the key that still sat on the desk. Why had Edward hidden that letter? What secrets had he taken to the grave?

Her thoughts spiraled as she left the office and made her way back to her room. The mansion, though beautiful, felt increasingly like a cage. The long hallways seemed to stretch endlessly, each corner filled with shadows that whispered of secrets she couldn’t yet understand.

By the time she reached her suite, Elena’s exhaustion had taken over. She sank onto the bed, pulling the letter from her pocket. Her fingers traced the edges of the paper, her mind racing with the possibilities of what it all meant.

What had Edward meant when he said her life depended on protecting what he had left her? What dangers lay ahead?

She read the final line of the letter again, her eyes lingering on the words. “Trust no one.”

As much as she wanted to confide in Olivia, the truth was that she didn’t know who to trust. Daniel had already shown his hostility, and though Olivia seemed kind, there was something about the way she handled everything so smoothly that made Elena uneasy.

With a sigh, she folded the letter and tucked it back into her bag. She couldn’t dwell on it now. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, and she needed to be prepared.

Just as Elena was about to settle in for the night, there was a faint knock on her door. She frowned, glancing at the clock on the wall. It was late, too late for a casual visit.

Hesitant, she walked to the door and opened it a crack, peering out into the dimly lit hallway.

To her surprise, it wasn’t a staff member or Olivia standing outside her door.

It was Daniel.

His expression was unreadable, but the tension between them was palpable. Elena’s heart skipped a beat, and every instinct told her to close the door and lock it behind her.

But she didn’t.

“I need to talk to you,” Daniel said quietly, his voice low and urgent.

Elena hesitated. The memory of his earlier hostility still hung in the air between them, but something about the way he looked at her now was different. He didn’t seem angry anymore—just determined.

“About what?” she asked warily, her hand still gripping the edge of the door.

Daniel glanced over his shoulder, as if making sure no one else was around, then turned back to her. His expression softened, just for a moment, and for the first time, Elena saw something other than coldness in his eyes.

“My father didn’t tell you everything,” Daniel said, his voice barely above a whisper. “There’s something you need to know, something he never put in that will.”

Elena’s pulse quickened, and she felt the weight of............
