Chapter 2 02
Henry, ever the charmer, took charge of the situation. "Well," he chirped, a touch too loud in the sudden stillness, "to celebrate this momentous occasion, I'm throwing a party at my mansion tomorrow night. All the family will be there, of course, and some of my business associates. A chance to officially welcome Jessica into the fold, wouldn't you say?"
Mom gasped dramatically, her eyes wide with delight. "A party! Oh, Henry, you shouldn't have! It'll be spectacular, I just know it."
Dad, however, remained impassive. He steepled his fingers, his eyes fixed on Henry. "A party," he echoed, a hint of suspicion in his voice. "How very generous of you, Henry."
Henry flushed slightly, but held Dad's gaze. "It's the least I can do, sir. Jessica deserves to be celebrated."
Dad finally cracked a semblance of a smile. "Very well," he said. "Just let me know the time. I wouldn't want to miss it."
The party at Henry's mansion the next night was everything I expected – opulent, sprawling, and utterly overwhelming. A sea of well-dressed people mingled amongst sparkling fountains and manicured gardens, their conversations filled with the clinking of champagne glasses and the hushed murmur of business deals. Henry, impeccably dressed in a tailored suit, made introductions with effortless charm.
"Jessica, darling," he purred, taking my hand and steering me towards a group of men in suits. "May I introduce you to some of my associates?"
As I forced polite smiles and endured insipid small talk, I spotted Dad across the room. He stood with Henry, a serious expression on their faces as they engaged in conversation. An unexpected pang of curiosity shot through me. What on earth could they be discussing?
Somehow, managing to excuse myself from a particularly overbearing investment banker, I made my way towards them. The closer I got, the more I could pick up snatches of their conversation.
"…a brilliant mind, just like her father," Henry was saying, his voice low and full of admiration. "Just needs a little guidance."
"She has potential, no doubt," Dad responded, his voice gruff but laced with a hint of pride. "But potential alone won't run a company, Henry."
He paused, then glanced in my direction. For a fleeting moment, his gaze locked with mine. A flicker of something – concern, maybe, or even a touch of hope? – passed through his eyes before he quickly masked it.
"I know she can do it, sir," Henry continued, his voice unwavering. "She's strong, intelligent, capable. And with the right support, she'll be an invaluable asset to the company."
A lump formed in my throat. It wasn't just the pressure anymore, the crushing weight of expectation. It was the warmth that bloomed in my chest at Henry's words. He wasn't just marrying me, he believed in me, saw a leader I didn't even know existed within myself.
As they caught sight of me approaching, both men fell silent. Dad cleared his throat, forcing a smile.
"Jessica," he said, his voice gruff as usual. "There you are. Enjoying the party?"
"It's lovely," I lied, my voice tight.
Henry stepped forward, his eyes searching mine. "You look radiant tonight, Jess," he murmured, his voice filled with genuine affection.
Behind his charming smile, I saw not ownership, but a love that mirrored my own growing uncertainty. A shiver ran down my spine, a cold premonition not of a life I didn't want, but of a future that might challenge everything I thought I knew about myself and my family.
Dad, oblivious to the undercurrent of tension, clapped Henry on the shoulder. "You take good care of her, son."
"Always, sir," Henry replied, his smile genuine. "I love Jessica very much."
Dad's face softened for a brief moment. "I know," he said, his voice gruff but sincere. "And we're all happy for you both."
The words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken promises and a future I was no longer sure I wanted to run from, but one I was determined to face head-on, with the love and support of the man standing beside me.
