Chapter 3 03
The night thrummed with the bass of the live band and the clinking of champagne flutes. I excused myself from a conversation about stock options ( yawn ) and found myself drawn to the balcony, a sliver of cool night air a welcome escape from the stifling opulence.
Leaning against the railing, I gazed out at the twinkling cityscape, feeling a strange mix of excitement and unease. The weight of Dad's expectations and the party's sheer extravagance threatened to suffocate me. Suddenly, a voice broke the silence.
"Mind if I join you, Cinderella?"
I whirled around, startled, to find a man with a mischievous glint in his eyes leaning against the railing a few feet away. He was tall, with tousled dark hair that defied gravity and a smile that could melt glaciers.
"Who… who are you?" I stammered, momentarily flustered.
"The answer to your wildest dreams," he winked, a playful smirk dancing on his lips. Okay, this guy was definitely trouble with a capital T.
"Or," he continued, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, "I could be Henry's long-lost, charming unidentical twin brother, Damon."
My jaw dropped. A twin brother? Henry had never mentioned a twin.
"Wait, seriously?" I blurted out, curiosity overriding my initial shock.
"As serious as a heart attack at a health retreat," he chuckled, his eyes twinkling. "Surprised you haven't heard of me, love. I'm the black sheep of the family, the wild child, the…"
"The one who throws epic pool parties and gets banned from five-star hotels?" The words tumbled out before I could stop them. Apparently, news of Damon's exploits had reached even my sheltered ears.
He threw his head back and laughed, a rich, infectious sound. "Guilty as charged! But hey, at least I know how to have a good time."
There was something about him, an undeniable charm that was both infuriating and strangely appealing. He was everything Henry wasn't – a little rough around the edges, a hint of danger in his eyes, and a smile that could light up a room.
"So, Cinderella," he leaned closer, his voice dropping to a husky murmur, "tell me about your dreams. Do they involve crystal slippers and glass ceilings, or something a little more…adventurous?"
My heart hammered against my ribs. This was ridiculous. Here I was, engaged to one brother, and flirting with the other on a random balcony. Yet, a thrill shot through me, a sense of excitement I hadn't felt in ages.
"Maybe a little of both," I confessed, a playful smile tugging at my lips. "What kind of adventures are we talking about?"
He winked again, that mischievous glint back in his eyes. "Just wait and see, love. The night is young." With that, he sauntered back into the party, leaving me breathless and reeling.
The encounter had been brief, but it had cracked open a tiny corner of my world, letting in a gust of fresh air and a sliver of doubt. Suddenly, the glittering future I thought I wanted felt a little…well, dull. Maybe, just maybe, there was more to life than boardrooms and expectations. Maybe there was room for a little adventure, a touch of chaos, and a whole lot of bad boy charm. The thought sent a shiver down my spine, a deliciously wicked feeling that had nothing to do with champagne. Tonight, it seemed, Cinderella was ditching the glass slipper and stepping into something far more exciting.
A giddy laugh escaped my lips as I watched Damon disappear into the throng of people. My heart thumped a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a mix of excitement and apprehension. Was I really flirting with Henry's twin brother? The very thought sent a spark of rebellion sizzling through me.
Suddenly, a high-pitched squeal shattered the night air. "Jessica! Oh my gosh!" Isabel, my best friend since childhood, materialized beside me, her eyes wide with excitement. "Congratulations! You look absolutely stunning!"
She squealed again, throwing her arms around me in a bone-crushing hug. "And Henry is just… *dreamboat alert*!" She released me and turned to him, flashing a smile that could rival the Las Vegas Strip. "Hi Henry! So handsome, tell me your secret to looking so…breathtakingly perfect?"
Henry chuckled, his usual reserved demeanor softening. "Good genes, I suppose," he said, his gaze flickering to me for a brief moment before returning to Isabel.
I felt a pang of something…was it jealousy? No, that couldn't be right. I was engaged to Henry, wasn't I? But seeing him effortlessly charm Isabel, the complete opposite of the awkward, introverted conversations we usually had, made a strange feeling twist in my stomach.
"Anyway," I interjected, desperate to change the subject, "where have you been all night?"
Isabel's eyes widened dramatically. "Oh, you wouldn't believe it! Just ran into the most fascinating man…"
Before she could elaborate, a deep voice cut through our conversation. "Speaking of fascinating men," it drawled, laced with amusement. "Hope I'm not interrupting anything."
We all turned to see Damon leaning against the railing, a knowing smirk playing on his lips. His gaze met mine, a glint of something unreadable flickering in his dark eyes.
"Damon!" Henry's voice crackled with barely concealed hostility. "What are you doing here?"
The smile on Damon's face widened. "Just crashing the party, bro," he said, his voice dripping with nonchalance. "Looks like I missed quite the…celebration."
My breath hitched in my throat. The carefree flirtation from earlier was gone, replaced by an undercurrent of tension that crackled between the brothers. I could practically feel the sparks flying between them, and a strange sense of foreboding washed over me. This wasn't just a party anymore; it felt like the beginning of something much bigger, something that could shatter the carefully constructed life I thought I wanted. And for the first time that night, a thrilling sense of uncertainty bloomed in my chest, and I couldn't help but wonder…where would it all lead?
