Chapter 2

2.

Yesterday was my birthday.

The whole day passed.

I didn't see a shadow of her.

Then, she made that post.

"I hope he stays safe and happy every year!"

I really thought it was for me.

I told myself she was just busy, but at least she was thinking of me.

Then Jace commented.

"Thank you, my Selah."

He even attached a cozy photo of the two of them.

That was my wake-up call.

It was never meant for me.

So, I shared their post with my congratulations.

Selah called and screamed at me.

"What are you posting? Are you still not done being jealous?"

I heard Jace's voice on the other end.

"Nate must be upset..."

No.

I was done caring.

Selah saw that I wasn't speaking and bit her lip.

"I'll make it up to you next month when I'm less busy."

"A grown man shouldn't be more dramatic than a woman..."

She grumbled while hanging the clothes.

If I hadn't needed to use the bathroom, I would have left again.

Being in the same room as her made the air feel tainted.

As I was in the middle of things, Selah's phone rang.

The caller ID said "Jacey."

I didn't know friends used such sweet nicknames.

I picked it up.

"Selah, I miss you..."

"Nate!"

Selah's voice boomed as she started banging on the bathroom door.

She screamed at me for invading her privacy.

Jace didn't say another word and hung up immediately.

The banging made my ears ring.

The moment I opened the door, she slapped me twice. My lip started bleeding.

Selah froze for a second.

But then, she blamed me for not dodging.

"Didn't anyone tell you not to touch other people's phones?"

She spoke as if I deserved it.

I wiped the blood from my lip and sneered.

"I was just worried Jacey was a client. I didn't want you to lose a deal."

"Who labels a client like that?"

Selah looked guilty.

She didn't dare look at me. She grabbed her phone and ran to the balcony.

Judging by her gestures, she was calling Jace back.

I couldn't hear them, but she was laughing so hard she was doubled over.

Selah had never been that happy with me.

I realized then.

Maybe we were never right for each other.

Luckily, I had finally woken up.

By the time she finished her call, I had already contacted a divorce lawyer.

But before I could bring it up, Selah suddenly mentioned that Nana was in the hospital.

"You're not busy, right? Let's go visit Nana together later."

She turned to go get ready.

I heard her clattering with her makeup bottles in the room.

My face darkened.

Nana wasn't my biological grandmother, but she had watched me grow up. She was wonderful to me.

Hearing she was hospitalized made me anxious.

I couldn't believe Selah, her own granddaughter, had time to play with makeup.

I grabbed my keys and left on my own.

When I reached the hospital, Selah called.

"Nate! Why didn't you wait for me?"

"Fine, I'll take an Uber..."

"Oh, and by the way, don't mention me seeing Jace to Nana!"

I felt a surge of contempt.

So that was the real reason for the call.
