Chapter 3
3.
Nana never liked Jace.
When Selah first dated him, Nana tried everything to stop it.
She thought Jace was a total fraud.
"If Selah stays with him, she'll only suffer."
"Nate... I feel at peace knowing Selah has you."
Nana told me everything.
She truly treated me like family.
But some things can't be forced.
Selah got impatient when I didn't answer.
"Did you hear what I said?"
She was terrified Nana would scold her over Jace. More importantly, she was afraid of losing her inheritance.
Nana was worth millions. Since Selah's parents passed away young, she was the sole heir.
However, Nana had made it clear. If Selah kept seeing Jace, she would donate every penny to charity.
Selah prodded me again.
The noise was giving me a headache.
I gave a vague response.
We were getting divorced anyway. She could do whatever she wanted, as long as she didn't delay the process.
I hung up and went to Nana's ward.
As soon as I walked in, Nana noticed my face.
"What happened? Did that girl hit you?"
I didn't want her to worry, so I shook my head and denied it.
Nana didn't push it, but she changed the subject.
"Did you like the birthday gift I sent yesterday?"
Mentioning my birthday made my heart ache.
Nana had someone deliver a gift early yesterday.
It was a brand new Ferrari.
She was probably the only person left who truly loved me.
"Are you moved?"
Nana took my hand and smiled.
"If you're moved, hurry up and have a baby with Selah. You're both so busy, I need a little one to keep me company..."
"Your child will be beautiful. Though, probably a bit of a troublemaker..."
I forced a smile at her words.
Time passed, and it was soon lunchtime.
Selah still hadn't arrived.
I didn't dwell on it and went out to buy food for Nana.
That was when I ran into Selah and Jace.
"Selah, you're so good to me. I wish we could be together forever."
Selah's face turned bright red.
"I want to be with you forever, too."
I never knew she could look so shy.
With me, Selah was always loud and aggressive.
She would yell or even hit me whenever she felt like it.
I used to think she was just being blunt and honest. Now I knew.
She just didn't love me.
Selah and Jace, who was in a hospital gown, walked hand in hand.
They were laughing and whispering.
I felt a surge of nausea and turned to leave.
But Jace spotted me.
"Nate?"
Selah looked over and frowned.
"What are you doing here?"
Then, her expression turned into one of realization.
"Are you stalking me? Do you think I'm cheating?"
"Nate! You don't trust me at all!"
Jace had a glint of amusement in his eyes, though he acted innocent.
"Nate, you've got it wrong..."
"Nothing happened between Selah and me."
"Jace, don't explain anything to him. I have a clear conscience!"
Ha! A clear conscience?
She should have been a lawyer with that kind of acting.
"Nate, don't project your disgusting thoughts onto other people."
I scoffed.
"Don't flatter yourself. I'm here to see Nana."
"By the way, her room is right here. Or did you forget?"
That's everything available right now.
