Chapter 2 At least Check Up On Me

Morning light cut across the bedroom at six-thirty. Evelyn was already dressed in a charcoal pantsuit, hair pulled back, face calm in the mirror. Julian's side of the bed remained undisturbed. A text from 2:14 a.m. sat unread: Caught at the office. Sleeping here. Don't wait up.

She poured coffee in the kitchen and drank it black while the forensic accountant's preliminary report loaded on her tablet. The man had worked through the night. The three transfers were only the beginning. Over the previous fourteen months, smaller amounts had moved through a chain of limited-liability companies, most of them registered in the same three jurisdictions. Some of the money had circled back into accounts that paid for a leased penthouse in a different building, a series of high-limit credit cards, and regular wire payments to an offshore sportsbook. The accountant's note at the bottom was careful and plain: Pattern consistent with systematic diversion. Recommend full forensic review and immediate freeze of remaining authority.

Evelyn set the tablet down and stared at the harbor. The water was the same flat gray it always was at this hour. She felt no sudden rage, only a steady, clarifying pressure behind her sternum. She had built Sterling Logistics through long nights and harder decisions. She had trusted this man with the private pieces of that life. The trust had been a choice. The choice now was what to do with the evidence.

She called Maren Cho, her chief of staff, and asked her to clear the morning calendar and meet her in the 42nd-floor conference room. Maren arrived twenty minutes later, closed the glass door, and listened without interruption while Evelyn walked her through the transfers and the accountant's summary. When Evelyn finished, Maren was quiet for a long moment.

"You want the divorce papers drafted today," she said. It was not a question.

"I want the joint accounts frozen first. Quietly. Then the papers."

Maren nodded once. "I'll loop in counsel. Do you want me to pull the prenup language again?"

"I already know what it says. I need the financial freeze before he realizes the window is closing."

They worked through the practical steps for nearly an hour-which banks required what documentation, which internal authorizations Evelyn still controlled alone, how to keep the board from hearing anything until the filings were ready. Maren never once asked whether Evelyn was certain. That silence was its own kind of loyalty.

By noon the first freeze notices had been submitted. Evelyn returned to her office, closed the door, and sat with the city spread below her. She opened the bottom drawer of her desk and took out the small velvet box that held her wedding band when she traveled. She turned it over in her fingers, then set it on the blotter and left it there.

Julian called at 1:40. She let it go to voicemail. He called again at 2:15. The third time she answered.

"Hey," he said, voice warm and slightly rushed. "I am so sorry about last night. The Chen group dragged everything out. I'm free tonight. Dinner at home? I'll cook."

Evelyn looked at the empty place on her finger. "I'm working late."

"Then I'll wait up."

"Don't."

A short pause. "Everything all right?"

"I'll see you when I see you."

She ended the call before he could answer. The phone stayed silent after that.

Late in the afternoon the forensic accountant sent a second file. This one included photographs from a building directory and a short lease summary. The leased penthouse was registered under one of the shell companies. The primary occupant was listed as a woman named Elise. Evelyn closed the file without opening the images. She already knew enough.

At 6:30 she told Maren to go home. She stayed in the office until the cleaning crew finished the floor. Only then did she ride down to the car. The penthouse was dark when she arrived. Julian's coat was not on the hook. She made tea she did not drink, stood at the kitchen window, and watched the harbor lights blur. Somewhere in the city he was still moving through the life she had paid for. The thought no longer surprised her. It only settled deeper.

She slept in the guest room that night. The main bedroom door stayed closed.
