Chapter 3 My Account

The full forensic report arrived at 7:12 the next morning. Evelyn read it at the kitchen counter while the coffee machine hissed. The numbers were larger than she had allowed herself to expect. Over nineteen months Julian had moved just under four million dollars through the chain of companies. Nearly a third of it had gone to the sportsbook. Another portion had paid for the leased penthouse, furniture, and monthly transfers to an account in Elise's name. The rest had been spent on travel, watches, and cash withdrawals that left no clear trail.

The accountant's final paragraph was dry. Recommend immediate revocation of all signature authority and power of attorney. Evidence is sufficient for civil recovery and, if desired, referral to counsel for possible criminal complaint.

Evelyn forwarded the report to the family attorney with a short note: Draft the divorce petition. Include every transfer. I want temporary restraining orders on assets and access to the residence. File as soon as the freezes are confirmed.

She showered, dressed, and drove herself to the office. Maren was already there with coffee and a printed timeline of the money movement. They sat in the glass conference room and walked through every line. Maren's pen moved steadily across a legal pad, marking the points that would matter most in court.

"He still thinks he has time," Maren said when they finished. "The freezes will hit his cards today or tomorrow. Once that happens, the performance ends."

Evelyn nodded. She felt the first real pulse of anger then, clean and focused. Not the wild kind that made people shout. The kind that made them precise.

Julian called at 10:03. She answered on speaker so Maren could hear.

"Ev, something's wrong with the Amex. It declined at breakfast. Can you check the joint account?"

"I froze it," she said.

Silence stretched for several seconds. When he spoke again the warmth had thinned. "What do you mean you froze it?"

"I mean the authority you used to move money out of my trust is gone. The divorce petition is being drafted this morning. You should call your own lawyer."

Another silence, longer. Then a short, incredulous laugh. "You're serious."

"I am."

"Evelyn, whatever you think you found, we can talk about it. I've been under pressure. The business-"

"The business is mine. The money you took is documented. So is the apartment and the woman living in it. Don't come to the penthouse. The locks will be changed by this afternoon."

She ended the call. Maren made a small note on the pad and said nothing. Outside the glass wall the city kept moving, indifferent.

By early afternoon the temporary restraining order had been granted on an emergency basis. Process servers were already looking for Julian. Evelyn stayed in her office and worked through a stack of legitimate contracts so the day would not be entirely defined by him. Every so often she felt the quiet flutter low in her abdomen that she had been ignoring for over a week. She pushed the sensation aside. There would be time later to confirm what she already suspected.

At 4:40 her phone lit with a text from an unknown number.

You don't get to erase me this easily. We need to talk face to face.

She deleted it without answering. Ten minutes later the same number called. She let it ring out. When the voicemail notification appeared she played it on speaker. Julian's voice was tighter now, the charm scraped thin.

"Evelyn, this is insane. You're overreacting to some accounting noise. I love you. I've always taken care of us. Don't do this in public. Meet me tonight and we'll fix it."

She deleted the message. Maren looked up from her laptop.

"He's going to escalate."

"I know."

Evelyn closed the laptop, gathered her things, and rode the elevator down. In the car she rested her head against the seat and closed her eyes. The city slid past in streaks of light. For the first time since the anniversary dinner she allowed herself to feel the full weight of the three years-every late apology, every polished smile, every moment she had chosen to believe the best version of the story. The belief had been hers to give. Taking it back would be hers as well.

When the car stopped at the penthouse she saw a dark sedan parked across the street. She did not recognize it. Her driver noticed at the same time and asked whether she wanted him to walk her up. She said yes. The elevator ride was silent. The new lock on the front door clicked cleanly under her key. Inside, the apartment was exactly as she had left it that morning. No coat on the hook. No sound from the bedrooms.

She set her bag down, locked the door behind her, and stood for a moment in the dark foyer. Then she turned on the lights one by one, moving through each room until she was certain she was alone. Only then did she sit on the edge of the guest bed and place a hand flat against her lower abdomen. The flutter came again, faint but unmistakable.

She stayed like that for a long time, listening to the quiet of the apartment and the distant hum of the city below. Tomorrow the papers would be filed. Tomorrow the public version of the story would begin. Tonight she simply sat with the knowledge that the life she had been living was already over, and whatever came next would be built on different ground.

Outside, the dark sedan remained parked across the street until well after midnight.

That's everything available right now.
