Chapter 2
2
Keira and her beloved Weston Drake never got to finish their movie date.
The hospital called the university's body donation registry, and Keira happened to be the faculty member on call.
She had always been fiercely dedicated to her work, especially when it came to anatomical donors.
Still, it surprised me that she had skipped work in the first place just to catch a matinee with Weston.
When she arrived at the hospital, she was wearing an elegant white dress, with Weston following closely behind in a sharp blazer.
They looked like a match made in heaven.
The resident handling the transfer on the hospital's end was Willa Brooks.
She had been our next-door neighbor growing up.
Willa bumped Keira's shoulder playfully.
"Were you out on a date with Weston? When am I getting an invitation to the wedding?"
A faint blush crept onto Keira's usually cold face.
She cleared her throat softly to hide her embarrassment.
"Let's stick to business," Keira replied. "Where's the donor? I need to transport the body back to the lab."
My corpse was kept inside the morgue cooler.
Keira turned around and gently patted Weston's arm, wearing a tender smile I hadn't seen in years.
"Wait here for me, Weston," she said softly. "The morgue isn't a place for you."
"You missed a lot of classes while recovering. Now that your vision is restored, you can use this new donor to practice your dissection technique."
Listening to her doting tone, my mind drifted back to my childhood.
Back then, I believed Keira was the best sister in the world.
She used to indulge me, protect me, and love me unconditionally.
Now, she was offering my dead body as a mere practice tool for Weston!
Weston was another childhood neighbor of ours.
Two years ago, right after my parents passed away, his family moved abroad.
He was the same age as me, but he had a silver tongue and always knew how to charm Keira.
Unlike me, who failed the college entrance exams, Weston returned to the country and immediately enrolled in the clinical medicine program where Keira taught.
Shortly after starting school, Weston got into a terrible accident.
I had suffered a severe bout of hypoglycemia that day, and Weston insisted on walking me to the urgent care clinic.
"Kian, don't take low blood sugar lightly," he had urged me. "It can turn fatal in minutes!"
On our way there, an electric scooter swerved toward us on the sidewalk.
Terrified, Weston let go of me to dodge, causing my weak legs to give out and scraping my knees on the pavement.
Weston tumbled backward into the street, where a passing sedan struck him, slamming his head against the curb.
The impact shattered the glass, severely damaging his corneas and blinding him.
When he woke up in the hospital, he wept and told Keira that I had pushed him into traffic to save myself.
Keira believed him without a second thought and slapped me hard across the face.
Since Weston's parents were stuck overseas, Keira brought him into our home to nurse him back to health.
She threw me out into the street, forcing me to fend for myself.
Back then, I was barely eighteen and didn't have a single penny to my name.
I still remembered the pure disgust etched onto Keira's face.
"You're the reason Mom and Dad are dead, and now you tried to ruin Weston's life too," she spat.
"You're nothing but a toxic jinx! Get the hell out of here and stay away from us!"
"Don't you ever contact me again unless you're dead―actually, don't even call me then!"
