Chapter 2

02.

The loud crash on my end startled Cyrus.

Without a second thought, he threw on his clothes, ready to rush back to the hospital.

Suddenly, a shriek came from the bathroom as the woman slipped.

Hesitation flickered in Cyrus’s eyes before he turned back and asked, “Are you okay?”

The girl shook her head, looking up at him with teary, helpless eyes.

Seeing her swollen ankle, Cyrus swept her up into his arms and carried her out to the car.

“I can take you to the ER, but you are not to bother my wife,” he warned firmly.

By the time Cyrus settled her in, the nurses on their rounds had already found me and lifted me back onto the bed.

My condition was critical.

Leukemia was already devastating, and fresh out of a stem cell transplant, my body was in an acute rejection phase.

The fall caused my vital signs to plummet, and the doctor warned that I might have to be moved back to the ICU if things got worse.

When Cyrus finally arrived, his eyes were bloodshot.

He held my hand tight, apologizing profusely for leaving me alone in the hospital.

I could clearly see the deep affection in his eyes, but the lipstick stain on his collar served as a glaring reminder of the other woman in his life.

My emotions spun wildly out of control, and my vitals tanked instantly. Cyrus shouted frantically for the doctors as I was rushed back into the emergency room.

They fought to save my life for twenty-four hours, and Cyrus stood vigil outside the entire time.

Through the glass doors, I could see him pacing anxiously, even grabbing the doctor’s coat to beg if he could donate stem cells again.

When the doctor shook his head, the color drained completely from Cyrus’s face.

I thought to myself, he must still love me deep down.

So why... why did he have to be with another woman?
