Chapter 3 A Difficult Request.
Linda had become speechless after accepting his request. For her, it was unthinkable she will indulge in such but, it was too late now to turn back. Moreover, she doesn't want to upset Clinton whom she thought must be going through a hard time because of the break-up. She pretended to be listening to the Cuban music, while Clinton would take a sip after sip of his champagne. He had already passed the threshold of his capacity nevertheless, he continued drinking as Linda was yet to notice any sign of intoxication. "Mr. Clinton, would you mind taking me back to what happened? What led to the break-up?" Linda pressed him again to open up. He takes another sip of champagne, "she is a cheat, a whore, and an ingrate! I don't deserve that kind of woman," the intensity of his voice was beginning to rise. "How could she do this to me, after all, I have done for her?" "I'm sorry Mr. Clinton," she looked downwards like she had been hurt by his words. "I know how you feel about the whole thing, believe me, it hurts but you have to put yourself back together." "Linda, you don’t understand how this shit hurts," he countered. "I do. I mean, we all have been hurt at one point in our lives. That I'm smiling with you right here and pretending that all is well with me doesn't mean, I don't have a scar on my heart. But like I have told you, this will not last. Give yourself some time and you will be whole again." "I know I will be fine someday," he takes another sip even though, his eyes were becoming heavy. "Yes, I know I will be fine but, for how long Linda? Until I'm dead, is that when I will be whole again? You don't know the hell I go through every single day when I'm alone in my house." "Have you ever heard of the saying, 'Time heals everything? I believe that is true because it happened to me," she reached out for his hands and held them across the table. She rubs them gently like she was trying to comfort him with a small massage. "I think we should be on our way now sir?" Linda suggested. Clinton who was not very sure of his state at that moment responded. "Sure, we should get going!" He paid their bills and staggered slightly, out of the restaurant with Clara holding his hands to give him some support. It was obvious that Clinton could not drive in his present state so, Linda took the wheel of his car after helping him get into the front seat. It was a long drive to his house because of the traffic that evening. Linda was worried because she will have to drop his boss off before heading to her own house which is not quite close to Clinton's home. "Mr. Clinton, I think you took more than your capacity tonight, don't you think so? You know that was too risky?" Slowly, he spoke up, "what else can I do Linda? That's the only way to end my misery temporarily." The rest of the journey ended in dead silence as Clinton seemed to have slept off. About half an hour after Clinton fell asleep, they arrived at his house. “Sir, wake up! We are home now! Sir, please wake up we are home now!" Clinton slowly moved to face her, "so soon? That was the fastest flight I have ever had in my life. Tell me, did you ever dreamt of becoming a pilot because you flew so fast?" Linda sighed and shook her head, "actually, this is a car and not an airplane. I drove you, I didn't fly you home," she smiled and began helping him to get off the car. "Stay right here and don't move, let me park the car." Clinton obeyed but, he never stopped losing his balance on the ground. He would shake from time to time. He was intoxicated badly. "Have we arrived at the airport?" He pointed at his house as he asked. Linda eased a smile, "Yes, we have arrived at the airport. But this airport was built on top of your house, would you mind if we go inside?" She threw her arms around his shoulders and helped him walk inside the house and also climbed the stairs to his room. In his room, she made him lay on the bed. She thought about making a cup of coffee for him. But just as Linda was about to leave and make a cup of coffee, Clinton called. "Hey, Linda! I need more wine. Bring them all out here and let's have some good times, “he smiled idiotically as he demanded. "No sir, I can't let you have any wine or champagne again. You have already drunk to a stupor. Enough of this sir," she said politely and headed for his kitchen. Soon, she was back with a cup of coffee. She went straight to his bed and sat beside him. “Here you go, sir. I have made you something far better than wine. Here, have some," she handed him the cup of coffee. Clinton drank but, was not satisfied with the taste of the new drink. "What's the name of this awful drink? It doesn't taste like champagne, not at all! Take this away and get me some champagnes!" He began handing over the coffee to Linda. She declined him, "why don't you take another sip, I'm sure you will like it?" "Are you I will? Are you sure about this?" "Yes, I'm sure, give it a try," she encouraged. While Clinton drank, he began complaining again. "That bitch crushed my heart! She is going to pay dearly for this. I will make her pay for her crimes." "No, don't say that sir," began Linda. "Just let go of her thoughts, they can only bring you more pain. You need to have rest now okay." Clinton was nearly crying. His voice sounded like he has been emotionally provoked. "How can I sleep when I'm going through all this pain? How could she shatter my heart into pieces when I meant well for her?" He complained. Linda drifted closer to him and placed her hands around his shoulders. She tapped them gently. "Sometimes, we don't have to question all that happens to us. We just learn to live with them. I believe in no distant time you will be fine sir. Now, it's time to sleep. I will have to be one my way now," she made Clinton lay straight on the bed by pushing him until he fitted in. She stood up to live but, it appears Clinton was not done with the list of his demands. "Can you do me another favor, Linda? I want you to sleep here tonight, beside me. Please, I need you close to me. 'What a night!' Linda told herself silently in her heart. If she could give in to his other demands then, this should not be a big issue for her. "Okay fine! I will sleep here tonight. You may now sleep, I will join you soon."
