Chapter 2 Aila woke up feeling drained
The next morning, Aila woke up feeling drained, her mind swirling with confusion and guilt. She hadn't slept well; images of the previous night kept replaying in her head. She could still feel Evan's hands on her, the weight of his words lingering in her mind. What had happened between them was something she never thought would occur, and yet here she was, lying beside her husband, Darian, pretending as if nothing had changed.
Darian stirred beside her, completely unaware of the storm brewing within her. He turned to her with a lazy smile, his hand slipping around her waist, pulling her close.
"Good morning, beautiful," he murmured against her ear. His tone was warm, his body relaxed, completely oblivious to the turmoil inside her.
Aila forced a smile, her heart heavy with the burden of the secret she now carried. "Good morning," she replied softly, her voice tight with emotions she didn't dare express.
Darian kissed the top of her head and then pulled away, stretching before getting out of bed. "I've got a meeting this afternoon, so I'll be home late again," he said casually, as if everything were perfectly normal.
Aila watched him, her mind racing with thoughts of Evan. How could she face him again? How could she live under the same roof as both of them, pretending that nothing had changed?
"That's fine," she muttered, her voice barely audible.
Darian, busy buttoning up his shirt, didn't seem to notice her distant tone. "You know, you should really go out today. Maybe get some fresh air, treat yourself to something nice," he suggested, glancing back at her with a grin. "You deserve it."
Aila forced another smile. "I'll think about it."
Darian leaned down to kiss her one last time before heading out the door. "Love you," he called over his shoulder as he left.
Aila didn't respond. She couldn't. The words felt foreign on her tongue, and the guilt that had been gnawing at her since last night grew heavier.
Once Darian was gone, Aila slipped out of bed and padded down the hallway. She could hear movement downstairs, the unmistakable sound of Evan making coffee in the kitchen. Her heart pounded in her chest as she paused at the top of the stairs, debating whether to go down or retreat back to the safety of her bedroom.
But she couldn't avoid him forever. She had to confront this, whatever "this" was. Taking a deep breath, Aila descended the stairs, her feet feeling like lead with each step.
Evan was standing by the kitchen counter, his back to her as he stirred a cup of coffee. The moment she entered the room, his presence became almost suffocating. She could feel the tension crackling in the air, thick and heavy.
"Good morning," Aila said quietly, her voice strained.
Evan turned to face her, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his face. His eyes raked over her body, lingering on the curve of her hips. "Morning," he replied, his voice deep and rough.
Aila crossed her arms over her chest, feeling exposed under his gaze. "We need to talk about what happened last night," she said, her voice firm, though her heart was pounding in her ears.
Evan set his coffee cup down and took a step towards her, his eyes darkening with desire. "What's there to talk about, Aila? You know you wanted it just as much as I did."
Aila's stomach twisted with a mixture of anger and guilt. "That's not true," she snapped, though the words felt hollow even as she said them. She had wanted something-she just didn't know what. The feelings inside her were so confusing, tangled between fear and a strange pull she couldn't understand.
Evan chuckled, the sound low and mocking. "You can lie to yourself all you want, but you can't lie to me. I saw the way you responded to me. You liked it."
Aila shook her head, stepping back as Evan advanced on her. "Evan, stop. This is wrong. I'm married to your brother, for God's sake!"
He closed the distance between them in two quick strides, his hand reaching out to brush a lock of hair from her face. "That hasn't stopped us before," he murmured, his fingers grazing her cheek.
Aila's breath hitched at his touch, her body betraying her once again. She hated how much control Evan seemed to have over her, how easily he could make her body respond despite the turmoil in her mind.
"Please, Evan," she whispered, her voice trembling with the weight of her emotions. "We can't keep doing this. Darian... he doesn't deserve this."
Evan's expression hardened, his hand dropping from her face. "Darian doesn't even appreciate what he has," he said bitterly. "He shows you off like some prize, but he doesn't see you the way I do. He doesn't *want* you the way I do."
Aila swallowed hard, tears pricking the corners of her eyes. "That doesn't make this right."
Evan took a step back, his gaze softening for just a moment. "Maybe not," he admitted quietly. "But it doesn't change the fact that I want you. And I think you want me too."
Aila's chest tightened as she stared at him, torn between the guilt she felt for betraying Darian and the undeniable attraction that had developed between her and Evan. She hated herself for feeling this way, for letting things get this far. But there was a part of her-small, dark, and twisted-that craved the attention Evan gave her, the way he made her feel desired in a way Darian never had.
"I don't know what I want anymore," Aila whispered, her voice barely audible.
Evan's eyes softened, his expression almost gentle as he stepped closer to her once more. "Then let me help you figure it out," he said, his hand brushing against her arm.
Aila closed her eyes, her heart hammering in her chest as she felt his touch. She knew she should push him away, walk out of the kitchen and put an end to this once and for all. But her feet stayed rooted to the spot, her body betraying her once again.
"I can't," she whispered, though her voice lacked conviction.
Evan leaned in closer, his breath warm against her ear. "Yes, you can," he murmured, his lips brushing against her skin. "You just need to stop fighting it."
---
The rest of the day passed in a blur. Aila tried to keep herself busy, distracting herself with household chores and errands, anything to avoid thinking about Evan. But it was impossible. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw him-his hands on her body, his lips on her skin. The memory of his touch haunted her, making it impossible to focus on anything else.
By the time Darian came home that evening, Aila was on edge, her nerves frayed from the constant battle inside her mind.
"Hey, babe," Darian greeted her with a smile as he walked through the door. "How was your day?"
Aila forced a smile, trying to appear as if everything were normal. "It was fine," she lied, her voice tight.
Darian didn't seem to notice her discomfort. He walked over to her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close. "I missed you," he murmured, kissing her neck softly.
Aila's heart ached at his touch. She didn't deserve his affection, not after what had happened between her and Evan. But she couldn't bring herself to pull away.
"I missed you too," she whispered, her voice filled with guilt.
Darian pulled back slightly, looking down at her with a warm smile. "You're quiet tonight. Everything okay?"
Aila nodded quickly, trying to hide the turmoil swirling inside her. "I'm just tired," she said, offering him a weak smile.
Darian's eyes softened with concern. "Why don't you go relax? I'll take care of dinner."
Aila nodded again, grateful for the opportunity to escape. "Thanks," she murmured, quickly retreating to the bedroom.
Once inside, she closed the door behind her and leaned against it, her heart racing. She didn't know how much longer she could keep up this charade, pretending that everything was fine when it was anything but.
---
Later that night, after Darian had gone to bed, Aila found herself standing outside Evan's room. She didn't know how she had ended up there, her feet seemingly moving of their own accord.
Her hand hovered over the door handle, her mind screaming at her to walk away, to go back to bed and pretend that none of this was happening. But she couldn't. She was trapped in a web of desire and guilt, unable to free herself from the mess she had created.
Taking a deep breath, Aila pushed the door open and stepped inside.
Evan was sitting on the edge of the bed, his shirt off, his eyes dark as he looked up at her. He didn't say anything, didn't need to. The tension between them spoke volumes.
Aila closed the door behind her, her heart pounding in her chest as she took a step towards him.
"I don't know what I'm doing," she whispered, her voice trembling.
Evan stood up, closing the distance between them in one quick movement. "Yes, you do," he murmured, his hand sliding around her waist. "You know exactly what you're doing."
