Chapter 2

Chapter 2

The maid was so scared she dropped to her knees on the floor.

Hearing the commotion, Zachary rushed over.

"What kind of tantrum are you throwing now, Luna?"

A sleepless night combined with the excitement of his engagement had left Zachary looking a bit tired.

He glared at me in the corner with intense annoyance.

Just as he was about to curse at me, I slid completely onto the floor.

"Luna!"

In that moment, Zachary forgot to be angry and yelled out in panic.

"Hailey! Hailey, come quick! Something happened to Luna."

This was the first time since I turned eighteen that Zachary had used my real name instead of calling me 'disgusting'.

Half-unconscious, I forced my eyelids open.

I heard him, but I had absolutely no strength left.

I could only let myself slip into a deep faint.

"Luna."

Hailey hurried over, hiding a dark gleam in her eyes.

She helped me up and started heading toward the hospital.

"Wait for me."

Zachary grabbed a random jacket and took me from Hailey's arms.

Feeling my burning skin, his eyes turned red with anxiety.

"Why is she so hot? Luna has always had a weak constitution. She'll be okay, right? If I had known, I wouldn't have locked her in her room yesterday."

His voice was full of self-blame.

Hailey forced a smile.

"Zach, if you put it that way, it should be my fault. It was my idea to lock her in the room. Don't be sad. When she wakes up, I'll apologize to her immediately."

With just a few words, Zachary seemed to find his anchor.

He unconsciously leaned closer to Hailey, drawing warmth and strength from her.

Because of this simple action, the short trip to the hospital essentially became a testament to their love.

Once we arrived, I was wheeled into the treatment room.

Zachary was completely out of his mind with worry.

He paced back and forth in fear, clapping his hands together.

"Luna won't be in any real danger, right? How am I supposed to explain this to Grandma?"

"This is all my fault. She's still just a kid at heart."

Listening to his rambling, Hailey rolled her eyes in irritation.

But in front of Zachary, she tucked away all her temper.

She hugged him with fake concern.

"Zach, Luna is already twenty years old. She isn't a child anymore."

"The doctor said she just caught a cold. It's my fault. Next time, I'll make sure to take good care of her so she doesn't stay up all night. Please don't worry."

She was subtly throwing me under the bus.

Zachary, who had calmed down, immediately remembered how I had collapsed on the floor.

So, all of this was just a pathetic trick I played to ruin his engagement?

"Yes, you're right. Luna is way too spoiled. To think she sat on the floor all night just to stop the engagement. Watch how I teach her a lesson this time."

Zachary spoke through gritted teeth.

Hailey blinked her eyes innocently.

Under her long eyelashes, she hid a fleeting look of calculation.

That afternoon, I woke up from my fever dream.

"Water... water..."

My throat was so hoarse that every single word felt like swallowing glass.

"Here."

Hailey gently pushed a drowsy Zachary back into his chair and brought me a cup of hot water.

Her attitude wasn't exactly warm, but she played the role of a caring elder perfectly.

Zachary held her free hand with deep gratification and rested his head against her wrist.

"I'm so lucky to have you."

"Ha."

I let out a scoff and turned my head away.

Only by not looking at them could I suppress the horrific pain in my chest.

"Do you have any manners? Greet your sister-in-law."

Zachary was incredibly displeased.

No matter what, Hailey was now officially my sister-in-law.

Giving her an attitude the moment I woke up was unacceptable to him.

It not only disrespected Hailey but also put Zachary in an awkward position.
