Chapter 1
The award for 'Architect of the Year' felt heavy in my hands, a solid piece of crystal that reflected the flashing cameras. On stage, my husband, Ethan Hayes, CEO of Hayes Corporation, stood beside me, his arm wrapped possessively around my waist. His smile was perfect, the picture of a devoted husband celebrating his wife' s success. To the world, we were New York' s power couple. I was Olivia Vance, the sharp, resilient architect, and my success was always mentioned in the same breath as my seemingly perfect marriage to him.
The applause was a dull roar in my ears. I just wanted to go home. The last project had been a nightmare, a brutal fight against a rival firm that played dirty. They' d sabotaged a construction site, a falling steel beam meant for me. I' d been quick, but not quick enough. My left arm, now hidden under the elegant sleeve of my gown, was shattered, held together by pins and a fresh, angry scar. Ethan had called it a small price for victory.
Back in the quiet of our penthouse, the celebratory champagne remained untouched. I changed out of the gown, my good hand fumbling with the zipper. Ethan was already on his phone, his back to me, his voice a low, charming murmur. I didn't need to hear the words to know it wasn't business.
My own phone buzzed on the nightstand. I picked it up, expecting a congratulatory message from a colleague. Instead, an unknown number.
"This little flower is ready to bloom for you tonight."
My breath caught. It was a stupid, childishly flirty text, but it was meant for the man standing a few feet away from me. Before I could process it, another message came through from the same number. It was a picture. A selfie of a young woman, maybe twenty, with wide, innocent eyes and a pouty mouth. She was lying down, and the background was unmistakable. The custom-made headboard, the silk sheets, the specific shade of grey on the walls.
She was in my bed.
"On your wedding bed, how scandalous!" the caption read.
A cold wave washed over me, so intense it felt like ice water flooding my veins. My shattered arm throbbed with a sudden, sharp pain. All the success, all the awards, all the public adoration felt like a joke. A cruel, elaborate lie. I had built an empire for this man, bled for it, and he was letting a child play in our bed.
Disgust curdled in my stomach, thick and bitter. I looked at his back, at the man I had loved, the man I had sacrificed everything for. And in that moment, something inside me broke far more completely than my arm ever had. The love died. All that was left was a cold, clear decision.
I would bring his entire empire crashing down around him. I would take back my name, my life, and my freedom.
A few days later, I was sitting in a quiet café near my office when a young woman slid into the seat opposite me. It was the girl from the picture. Chloe Davis. In person, she looked even younger, dressed in a university sweatshirt and jeans, an aspiring influencer trying to look casual.
"Olivia Vance," she said, her voice a little shaky but laced with an undeniable arrogance. "I'm Chloe."
I just looked at her, my expression unreadable. I didn' t say a word.
"I know you saw my texts," she pushed on, gaining confidence from my silence. "Ethan and I, we're in love. He's just with you out of obligation."
I took a slow sip of my coffee, my eyes never leaving hers. The silence stretched, becoming heavy and uncomfortable for her. She started to fidget.
"He told me all about you," she said, her tone turning nasty. "How you' re so cold and calculating. How you' re not the woman he fell in love with anymore."
"Is that so?" My voice was quiet, almost conversational.
My calmness seemed to enrage her. She leaned forward, her eyes flashing with malice. "He says you' re… damaged. That you can' t give him what a real woman can. What I can."
I set my cup down with a soft click. I leaned back, my gaze sweeping over her, from her cheap sneakers to her poorly applied makeup. "You think you' re the first one, don't you? You think you're special."
She flinched, but recovered quickly. "I am special. I'm giving him what you never could."
With a flourish, she pulled a piece of paper from her purse and slid it across the table. It was a lab report. A pregnancy test. Positive.
"I'm pregnant," she announced, a triumphant smirk on her face. "His child. You lose, Olivia."
I stared at the paper, not with the shock or pain she expected, but with a sudden, chilling clarity. This was the final line. This was the one rule he knew he could never, ever break.
I leaned forward, my voice dropping to a whisper. "Chloe Davis. Born in Ohio, moved to New York on a partial scholarship to NYU. Your parents think you're studying business, but you haven't been to a class in six weeks. You have a student loan debt of sixty-two thousand dollars, and your credit card is maxed out. You think this baby is your winning lottery ticket."
Her face went pale. The smirk vanished. "How… how do you know that?"
"I know everything," I said, my voice still a whisper, but it carried the weight of a death sentence. "And I know that if you don't get rid of that 'lottery ticket' and disappear from my husband's life, I will make sure your life is not just ruined. I will make sure it is a living hell. You will be expelled, your parents will find out exactly what their good daughter has been doing, and you will never work in this city, or any other, ever again."
She stared at me, her mouth opening and closing like a fish. The youthful arrogance was gone, replaced by pure terror.
I stood up, dropping a hundred-dollar bill on the table. "For the coffee. And for the abortion."
As I walked away, I didn't feel triumph. I felt a deep, hollowing sadness. I looked at her, trembling in her seat, and I saw a ghost. A ghost of the girl I used to be, before the world and Ethan Hayes had forged me into this cold, hard weapon. She was a pawn, just as I had been. But her game was over. Mine was just beginning.
