Chapter 2

The woman I was now, the one who could dismantle a young girl' s life without flinching, wasn't born. She was made.

I remembered the girl I used to be. Eighteen, fresh out of a foster care system that had left me with nothing but scars, both visible and not. I came to New York with less than a hundred dollars, working two dead-end jobs just to afford a tiny room in a shared apartment. I was drawing architectural sketches on napkins because I couldn't afford paper, dreaming of a life I was sure I' d never have.

That' s when I met Ethan. He wasn' t a CEO then. He was just as hungry as I was, starting a small tech company out of a garage with a handful of friends. He saw me in a diner, exhausted and covered in grease from my dishwashing shift, and he didn' t see a nobody. He saw the sketches I was hiding under my placemat.

He bought me a real sketchbook that night. He told me I had a fire in my eyes. He was the first person who ever made me feel seen. He was charming, ambitious, and he looked at me like I was a miracle. He supported me, encouraging me to apply to Columbia' s architecture program. He paid for my first semester when I got in, using money he was supposed to invest in his company. For a girl who had never known kindness, it felt like salvation.

I fell in love with him completely. His dream became my dream. I saw the dangers in his world, the ruthless competitors, the loan sharks circling his fledgling business. The innocent, dreamy girl I was wouldn' t survive in that world, and she couldn't help him survive either. So, I changed.

I deliberately and thoroughly transformed myself. I cut my long, wild hair into a sharp, severe bob. I traded my worn-out jeans for tailored suits. I forced myself to learn about business, about leverage, about negotiation. I sat in on his meetings, my mind a sponge, learning to spot weaknesses and anticipate threats. I became his strategist, his enforcer, his partner in every sense of the word. Together, we built Hayes Corporation from nothing into a titan of industry. I became the woman I needed to be to protect him and our empire.

I remember one evening, years later, after we had closed a particularly vicious deal. We were standing on the balcony of our new penthouse, the one I had designed. He was looking out at the city lights.

"I miss her sometimes," he said softly.

"Miss who?" I asked.

"The girl in the diner," he said, not looking at me. "The one with paint on her fingers and big, scared eyes. The innocent one."

His words didn't feel romantic. They felt like a judgment. A bitter complaint. I had sacrificed that girl for him, for this life, and he was mourning her loss as if I had killed a stranger instead of a part of myself. It was the first time I felt a true crack in the foundation of our love.

That night, when I came home from the café after confronting Chloe, Ethan was waiting for me. He was pacing in the living room, a rare sign of agitation. He must have spoken to her.

"Liv," he started, trying to sound calm. "We need to talk."

I walked past him to the bar and poured myself a glass of water, my hand steady. "About what, Ethan?"

He stopped pacing and stood in front of me. "About Chloe."

"The intern from marketing? What about her?" I asked, my voice cool.

He reeked of her. A cheap, cloyingly sweet perfume. It was the same scent that had been clinging to his clothes for months, a scent I had chosen to ignore.

"Don't play dumb, Olivia. She called me, hysterical. She said you threatened her."

I took a slow sip of water. "I did."

He looked stunned by my directness. "Why? She's just a kid. She's… she' s fragile."

"She' s pregnant, Ethan," I said, my voice flat. I watched the color drain from his face. "With your child. She showed me the test results."

He stumbled back, leaning against the bar for support. "Oh, God."

I set my glass down. This was the moment. The final test. "You have a choice," I said, and the words felt like they were being torn from my soul. "You know I can't have children. You know why. So you can have her and that baby, and I will walk away with what is mine. Or you can handle this, and we can move on. But that child cannot be born."

It was a cruel, impossible ultimatum, but he had left me with nothing else. I had given him everything, endured everything. The one thing I couldn't give him was a child, a wound he knew was my deepest, most painful vulnerability.

He looked at me, his eyes filled with a conflict I had never seen before. He hesitated. It was only for a second, but in that second, I saw the entire future of our marriage crumble to dust.

"She's just so… pure," he whispered, defending her. Defending the girl who looked like the ghost of me. "She didn't mean for any of this to happen."

Pure.

The word shattered the last piece of my heart. He was choosing her fabricated innocence over my lifetime of sacrifice. He was choosing the fantasy over the woman who had bled for him.

"I see," I said, my voice devoid of all emotion. "Get out of my house, Ethan."

He stared at me, shocked. "Liv, wait-"

"Get. Out."

He finally saw the look in my eyes. The look of a woman who had nothing left to lose. And for the first time, he looked truly afraid of me.

That's everything available right now.
