Chapter 1

On the day my father-in-law was cremated, Selene promised she would make it back for the funeral.

I stood in the cemetery for a day and a night, clutching the urn, but she never showed up.

Instead, I saw a post from the guy she always called her "best friend."

It was a photo of them kissing passionately on a beach.

The caption read: "Love until the end of time."

I looked at the radiant, happy smile on her face. She had clearly forgotten that today was the day her own father was being laid to rest.

A wave of nausea hit me.

I left a comment: "Help me give Selene a message. Both I and her father up in heaven wish you two a long and happy life together!"

My mentor's final wish before he died was to see Selene one last time.

But when I saw her out having the time of her life with Xavier, completely ignoring her father's death, I didn't feel like screaming.

I didn't want to beg her to come back.

My only thought was: I want a divorce.

So, when Selene finally called to explain, I was too buried in my own grief to care what she said.

"Caleb, let me explain. I didn't miss it on purpose. I'm just so busy with work. Besides, you were there to handle things, right? Why did I absolutely have to be there?"

"Are you really going to throw a fit and talk about divorce over a dead man?"

My heart skipped a beat, then it ached.

"Selene! Do you even have a heart? That was your biological father. How can you say that?"

"Exactly, he was my father, not yours. Why are you the one making such a scene?"

She was the one who said she'd be back. She was the one who said she wanted to say her final goodbye.

And yet, this was the result.

"I waited for you at the cemetery for twenty-four hours," I said, my voice cold.

There was silence on the other end for a moment, followed by the sound of her putting on clothes.

"Are you insane? You stood there for that long holding an urn?"

I didn't wait because of her promise alone. I did it for Arthur, my mentor.

He didn't get to see his daughter before he passed.

I wanted him to at least be sent off by her hands.

"Just wait. I'm coming over now."

She grumbled before hanging up, "Honestly, burying a dead person is such a damn hassle."

My heart went cold.

I couldn't understand how someone could treat their own father like that.

Arthur loved her so much!
