I waited at the cemetery for another two hours, but Selene never showed.

In the end, I had no choice but to finish the arrangements myself and take a cab home.

When I got back, I collapsed onto the sofa, feeling utterly drained.

I hadn't eaten or slept in over a day. My head was spinning.

Then, my phone chimed. It was another update from Xavier.

The caption was: "My baby worked so hard. She stayed up all night with me to finish this proposal."

Selene had replied right under it without a care in the world: "It wasn't hard at all. It's what I should do!"

The post vanished from my feed a few minutes later.

I didn't care. I took a quick shower and headed to the bedroom to crash.

I had just fallen asleep when the door was slammed open. The loud bang startled me awake.

Before I could react, my blanket was ripped off the bed.

I looked up to see Selene's furious face. "Caleb, are you out of your mind? You called me to the cemetery and then left before I got there!"

"Do you have any idea how terrifying a place like that is for a girl? Were you trying to set me up?"

"And here I was, looking for you for hours. I just got back!"

"And the first thing I see is you sleeping! Couldn't you have made some food and waited for me?"

I stared at her. She was exploding with rage, and every word was a redirected blame.

Not a single word about her father.

It was as if the man who died had nothing to do with her.

I let out a mocking laugh. "Are you that starving? What, is Xavier too weak to feed you? Sounds like he's pretty useless."

"Caleb, what the hell is that supposed to mean?"
