Chapter 2
2
Silas didn't even look at me while he spoke.
His fingers were flying across his phone screen, and a smile tugged at his lips every few seconds.
Flashbacks hit me like a wave.
On our first anniversary, Silas bought a mango cake.
I didn't want to ruin the mood, so I took a tiny bite.
I ended up in a coma from the allergic reaction.
When I woke up, he was crying like a baby, his hands shaking as he held mine.
"Sonya, I'll never let you touch a mango again. I'll never let you feel pain ever again!"
I snapped back to reality and reached into my bag for the medical report.
"I lost the baby."
He finally spared me a glance, looking annoyed.
"Is this about that one glass of whiskey? Jealousy should have its limits. Don't joke about a child."
Yesterday, the pain was so bad I wanted to die. I was helpless and desperate.
To him, I was just a jealous woman puttting on an act.
I looked down and handed him the paperwork.
"The baby is gone for real."
"And so are we. We're done."
I didn't even dare to use the word "breakup."
Five years ago, my parents' company went bankrupt.
To pay off their debts, I accepted Silas's credit card.
From that moment on, I became his kept woman.
We lived together for five years. We even had a child together. But I never had a title.
Silas stared at the report, his eyes filled with shock.
After a long silence, his gaze moved to my flat stomach. He pulled me into his arms.
His voice was thick with guilt.
"Don't be sad. Once you recover, I'll give you another one."
He looked heartbroken as he gently patted my back.
It felt like we were back to being close again.
But that was only if I ignored the scent of gardenias on him―Selina's signature perfume.
A wave of nausea hit me. I pushed him away.
"Mr. Thorne, I'm being serious."
When he heard me use such a formal title, his face turned cold.
"Stop throwing a tantrum! Do you still think you're a rich heiress? Who else would take care of you if you left me?"
He was right. I wasn't that pampered girl anymore.
But I clearly remembered the nights we spent together.
He used to kiss my neck and look at me with so much love it felt like it would overflow.
He promised me over and over again.
"Sonya, even if your family lost everything, you're still the most precious princess in my heart."
I clenched my fists, my lips trembling, but I couldn't say a word.
Silas finally realized he had gone too far. A flash of panic crossed his face.
"Don't get it twisted. Selina and I are just for show. I won't abandon you."
He quickly pulled out his phone.
"The party was my fault. I'm taking you off the blocklist right now. I'll never block you again."
He then pulled a beautiful velvet box from his blazer pocket.
Inside was a massive, sparkling diamond ring.
I froze.
Every time we went shopping and passed a jewelry counter, I couldn't help but look at the rings.
And every time, he would pull me away without mercy.
His voice would be mocking. "Sonya, I've done enough for you. Be grateful for what you have."
His meaning was clear. I was just a toy.
He could spoil me, but he would never marry me.
But now...
Looking at the ring, my body felt stiff.
I let him grab my hand and slide the ring onto my middle finger.
Silas smiled suddenly, looking like a winner.
"See, Sonya? I told you. You can't live without me."
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
It was a call from Selina.
"Sonya, Silas has such terrible taste!"
"He bought me a fifty-million-dollar ring, but the diamond is so huge it looks tacky..."
"Honestly, I think that five-thousand-dollar freebie he gave you looks much better!"
