Chapter 1

Chapter 1

On the seventh year of trying to win Landon Reed's heart, he married his childhood sweetheart.

His friend asked him, "You're just going to get married like this? What about Vivian? She loves you so much, she'll lose her mind."

Landon's eyes were full of coldness as he mocked.

"Then let her lose it," he said. "I'm tired of sleeping with her after all these years anyway."

So, on the day of his wedding, I lay in a hotel room and let my life slip away, wishing him a happy marriage.

Landon called me and sighed. "Can you stop throwing a tantrum? Can't we just split up peacefully?"

My heart finally died.

I calmly spoke to the System in my mind. "System, I want to give up on this mission. I want to go home."

…

On the day Landon and Willow Yates got married, he thoughtfully sent me a wedding invitation.

I opened it to look at their photo. They were a match made in heaven.

I threw the invitation into the trash can and looked at the starlight outside the window.

The city lights were brilliant in the distance.

A giant screen displayed Landon and Willow's wedding photos, and fireworks lit up the sky.

I stood alone in front of the huge floor-to-ceiling window, isolated from the outside world.

It was very lonely.

But this was also the most relaxed and free moment I had experienced in my seven years of trying to win Landon over.

Only at this moment could I truly be myself.

I didn't have to be heartbroken over someone who didn't belong to me.

My phone kept ringing, loud and annoying.

I picked it up, wanting to hang up.

But when I saw that familiar string of numbers, I couldn't bring myself to do it.

It was Landon calling.

Actually, Landon rarely called me. Most of the time, he only spoke to me coldly through text messages.

I always thought he just wasn't good with words.

That was until I saw the deep affection on his face and the sweet words he spoke when he proposed to his childhood sweetheart.

Then I finally knew.

It wasn't that Landon wasn't good with words.

He just didn't want to talk to me.

Thinking of this, my chest throbbed with a sharp pain.

This was my most desperate day in all my years of loving Landon.

I hung up the phone, lay on the bed, and used a sharp fruit knife to end my pain.

It didn't take long before I felt waves of coldness washing over me.

I instinctively opened Landon's messages, wanting to get back at him. I wanted him to know that his wedding day was also the day of my passing.

But when I saw our chat history, seeing the vast blank spaces and his sparse replies, I could only give a weak smile.

Forget it, he didn't care anyway.

He would only think I was bringing him bad luck.

I should have known earlier. To Landon, I was just a disposable bedmate.

Maybe when he heard about my passing, he would clap his hands and feel relieved.

I moved my trembling fingers and typed out a difficult blessing to him.

I wrote, "Landon, I wish you and Willow a happy marriage."

After the message was sent, Landon called me again.

Looking at the caller ID, I suddenly really wanted to hear his voice.

But once the call connected, hearing his cold tone, I instantly regretted it.

Landon said, "Can you stop throwing a tantrum? Can't we just split up peacefully?"

Hearing his words, my chest spasmed violently, followed by a suffocating pain.

It hurt so much.

My heart hurt, and my arm hurt too.

Landon continued, "Today is the happiest day of my life."

"You need to be more mature. Just show up to my wedding. Willow keeps asking why you aren't here…"

My hands and feet were ice cold.

But I let out a low laugh.

I was laughing at my own innocence, laughing at my seven years of love.

On the other end of the phone, Landon was still talking.

I interrupted him and said softly, "Landon, I'm afraid I'll lose my mind. I'll tell Willow that we've been sleeping together for seven years. Do you think she'll be mad?"

Landon paused, lowering his voice and suppressing his anger. "Vivian Shaw, you truly disgust me. Why don't you just drop dead?"

I hung up the phone, watching the crimson staining my skin.

I forced a smile.

Landon, I am being very obedient.

I closed my eyes tightly, not wanting to look at the giant screen outside anymore. I didn't want to see Landon looking at Willow with such tenderness.

I was afraid my heart would hurt even more.

My voice was weak, so quiet that only I could hear it.

"System, I'm giving up the mission. I want to go home."

After a long time, a voice echoed in my mind.

"Your real body's heart can no longer sustain your life. You won't have many days left to live if you go back. Are you sure?"

I looked at the marks on my skin and smiled bitterly.

"I'm sure."
