Chapter 2
Kayden Justice POV:
I pushed through the glass doors of the corner coffee shop, the chill of the morning air hitting my face as I gripped an iced Americano.
I walked toward the ride-share pickup zone, but a sleek black Maybach parked across the financial boulevard caught my eye.
The passenger door swung open.
Celestino stepped onto the curb, his tailored charcoal coat unbuttoned, his hand resting firmly on the small of Felisha's back.
Felisha wore crimson red-bottom stilettos. She leaned back against his chest, tilting her head up, and Celestino kissed her on the open sidewalk in broad daylight.
I stopped at the pedestrian crossing, watching the spectacle across the four-lane road.
My pulse remained flat. The scene did not hurt; it simply looked cheap, like a poorly scripted daytime soap opera.
I tossed my empty coffee cup into the recycling bin and walked away toward the ride-share pickup zone.
Twenty minutes later, I unlocked the door to my private apartment.
I went straight to my home office without turning on the overhead lights, flipping open my laptop on the dark oak desk.
The screen illuminated my face. I opened a blank document and typed two bold words across the header: Resignation Letter.
My keystrokes were rhythmic and steady.
I explicitly waived all unvested stock options, relinquished the ceremonial Vice President title, and severed my executive ties with Apex Dynamics effective immediately.
The laser printer beside my desk hummed, spitting out the crisp sheet.
I signed my name with a black fountain pen and sealed the paper inside a plain white envelope.
As I pressed the adhesive down, an encrypted notification chimed in the lower corner of my screen.
The sender ID read: ScentNova Executive Board.
My fingers paused above the keyboard.
ScentNova Technologies was Apex Dynamics' fiercest competitor in quantitative algorithmic infrastructure, backed entirely by the Northern Union's most formidable conglomerate—the Wilson family.
I clicked the file open.
It was a fully drafted executive contract offering me the position of Chief Executive Officer.
The base compensation was ten times what Celestino had ever paid me, accompanied by a fifteen percent direct equity stake in ScentNova.
At the bottom of the formal letter, a single handwritten note had been scanned into the document:
"Your algorithms deserve a real empire.—Adrian Wilson."
Adrian Wilson. The reclusive S-Class Alpha whose name commanded absolute authority across the continent's capital markets.
The ambition I thought had burned out in Celestino's hallway flared back to life like a wildfire.
I picked up my phone and dialed the private direct line provided at the foot of the contract.
The call connected on the first ring.
"Miss Justice," a deep, textured baritone answered smoothly. "I expected you to take at least ten minutes to review the terms."
"Mr. Wilson," I said, leaning back into my leather chair. "Your intelligence network moves faster than your public PR."
"When it comes to the only architect capable of breaking Meridian Capital's concurrency limits, I do not waste time."
"I am interested in your offer," I said evenly. "However, I will not sign until I personally inspect your hardware array and verify that your servers can handle my core models."
"Tomorrow morning, ten o'clock sharp," Adrian replied without a fraction of hesitation. "I will be waiting in the main lobby."
"I will see you then, Mr. Wilson."
I hung up, looking down at the sealed white envelope on my desk.
Celestino believed I would crawl back and beg for his approval.
He had no idea I had just accepted the keys to the machine that would dismantle him.
I booked a same-day courier service on my phone, setting the delivery address directly to Apex's CEO suite for the following morning.
I stood up, walked into the bathroom, and stripped off my clothes, stepping under the steaming spray of the shower.
I dried my hair, stood before the vanity mirror, and ensured the Level IV neck cuff sat flush against my throat.
Tomorrow morning, my new life would begin.
