Chapter 2 The Alpha's Chosen Future
Chapter 2: The Alpha's Chosen Future
The first thing Alpha Driven Veyl did that morning was order Elena Moonveil's name removed from the Moon Ceremony guest list.
The second was demand to know why his wolf refused to settle whenever he thought about her.
Neither problem pleased him.
"You're telling me you found nothing?" Driven asked, staring at the report in his Beta's hand.
Rowan stood before his desk, looking uncomfortable. "Elena has no criminal record, no known relatives outside Blackthorn, and no history of unusual abilities. The healer's records confirm what we've always known. She has no wolf."
"Then explain what I sensed yesterday."
"I can't, Alpha."
Driven's fingers tightened around the edge of the desk.
The memory returned against his will: Elena's defiant eyes, the strange silver glow beneath her sleeve, and the inexplicable certainty that had surged through his chest.
Mine.
His wolf had never spoken that way about anyone.
Driven rose abruptly and crossed to the window. Below, servants were preparing the courtyard for the ceremony. Black banners hung from the stone walls, and hundreds of guests would arrive before sunset.
Tomorrow, he would announce his alliance with the powerful Frostvale Pack. Their daughter, Lady Isadora, was everything his council wanted in a Luna-wealthy, well-connected, and born with an exceptionally strong wolf.
A political marriage would secure Blackthorn's borders for decades.
He would not allow an unexplained reaction to a servant to threaten that future.
"Have Elena assigned to the eastern hall," he ordered. "She is to remain away from the guests."
Rowan hesitated. "Wouldn't it be simpler to dismiss her?"
Driven turned.
"Do you want me to dismiss every servant who makes a mistake?"
"No, Alpha."
"Then do your job."
Rowan bowed and left.
Driven remained at the window, trying to silence the restless creature inside him.
He had built his reputation on control. His warriors obeyed him because he never hesitated. His enemies feared him because he never allowed emotion to cloud his judgment.
He would not begin now.
Whatever he had sensed in Elena Moonveil, he would uncover the truth before the ceremony.
And if she proved to be nothing more than the wolfless girl everyone believed her to be, he would forget her.
He had no idea why the thought made his wolf snarl.
---
Elena discovered she had been removed from the ceremony preparations when Madam Celeste thrust a stack of laundry into her arms.
"You're to work in the eastern hall today," the housekeeper announced. "No serving at the main gathering. No carrying drinks to the guests. And under no circumstances are you to approach the Alpha."
Elena stared at her. "Did I do something wrong?"
Celeste gave a humorless laugh. "You exist. Apparently, that's enough trouble."
The words stung more than Elena wanted to admit.
She had spent years accepting that the pack considered her a disappointment, but yesterday's encounter with Driven had unsettled her. He had looked at her as though he recognized something she could not see herself.
Now he was avoiding her.
Perhaps she had imagined the entire thing.
Perhaps the silver mark and the strange voice were products of exhaustion.
She tightened her grip on the laundry.
"Fine. I'll work in the eastern hall."
"Good. And try not to embarrass us."
Celeste walked away before Elena could respond.
Mira appeared around the corner carrying a basket of fresh linens.
"Let me guess," she said. "You've been promoted to the most important job in the estate."
Elena gave her a tired look. "Laundry."
"Of course. A position worthy of royalty."
Elena almost smiled.
Mira lowered her voice. "I heard the Alpha has ordered everyone to keep you away from him."
"Then he won't have to worry about seeing me."
"That's not what I meant."
"I know."
Elena placed the laundry on a nearby table and pulled back her sleeve. The silver crescent had disappeared again, leaving no trace.
She had barely begun to wonder whether she should visit the healer when a sharp pain shot through her wrist.
She gasped.
For an instant, the crescent returned, brighter than before.
Then it vanished.
Mira caught her arm. "Elena, your face-"
"I'm fine."
"You look terrified."
Elena forced a breath through her nose. "I didn't sleep well."
Mira didn't look convinced, but she let the matter go.
Neither noticed the elderly woman standing at the far end of the corridor.
The woman wore a healer's gray robes. Her silver hair was tied at the nape of her neck, and her eyes remained fixed on Elena's wrist.
Recognition crossed her face.
Then fear.
She turned and hurried away.
---
By noon, the Frostvale delegation had arrived.
Elena heard the announcement from the eastern hall as she folded ceremonial cloths. The guests were welcomed with trumpets, followed by the thunder of hooves and the excited murmurs of servants.
She had no intention of watching.
Unfortunately, the estate had other plans.
Madam Celeste rushed into the hall, her cheeks flushed.
"Elena! The Alpha's private dining room hasn't been prepared."
Elena looked at the stack of folded cloths. "I was told to remain here."
"And now I'm telling you to prepare the dining room. Lady Isadora has arrived, and the Alpha expects everything to be perfect."
"Why can't another servant do it?"
Celeste stared at her as though she'd spoken another language.
"Because I said so."
Elena swallowed her frustration, gathered the silverware, and headed upstairs.
She was halfway through arranging the dining table when the door opened behind her.
"You're Elena Moonveil, aren't you?"
The woman standing in the doorway was breathtaking.
Lady Isadora wore a fitted midnight-blue gown embroidered with tiny crystals. Her dark hair fell in polished waves over her shoulders, and a diamond necklace rested against her throat. Everything about her suggested wealth, confidence, and the certainty that the world would make room for her.
Elena lowered her head politely.
"Yes, my lady."
Isadora stepped into the room, examining the table.
"I've heard about you."
Elena kept arranging the glasses. "I hope nothing unpleasant."
"That depends on what you consider unpleasant." Isadora smiled without warmth. "The servants say you're wolfless."
Elena's fingers tightened around a goblet.
"They talk too much."
"Perhaps. But it's an interesting condition, isn't it? To be born among wolves and possess none of their gifts."
Elena placed the goblet down carefully.
"I didn't choose how I was born."
"Of course not." Isadora drifted toward the window. "But the Alpha's future Luna will be expected to stand beside him in battle, command respect, and produce strong heirs. You can understand why a woman without a wolf would be unsuitable."
"I'm not applying for the position."
Isadora turned, her smile sharpening.
"No. But strange things happen at Moon Ceremonies. Sometimes the goddess chooses people no one expects."
Elena's stomach tightened.
Isadora noticed.
"Has something happened between you and the Alpha?"
"No."
"You're a terrible liar."
"I'm also very busy."
For the first time, Isadora's expression hardened.
"Remember your place, Elena. Whatever you imagine you might become, Driven's future is already being decided. Our families have an agreement, and I don't intend to lose my position because of a servant's foolish dreams."
Elena met her gaze.
"Then you have nothing to fear from me."
Isadora stared at her for a long moment before letting out a quiet laugh.
"We shall see."
She swept from the room, leaving behind the scent of expensive perfume and a warning Elena couldn't dismiss.
Elena returned to the table, but her hands were shaking.
Not because she feared Isadora.
Because the woman's words had touched the same uncertainty that had haunted her since yesterday.
What if the Moon Goddess really could choose her?
What if the strange pull she had felt around Driven meant something?
And what if it did?
She had heard the Alpha's words. He wanted a Luna who would strengthen his political position. He would never choose a wolfless servant over a woman like Isadora.
Elena had no reason to hope.
Yet somewhere beneath her ribs, something stirred again.
This time, it felt almost like a heartbeat answering another heartbeat from far away.
---
That evening, the estate glittered beneath hundreds of lanterns.
The main hall filled with visiting Alphas, wealthy families, warriors, and their unmated children. Music floated from the musicians' platform while servants moved between the guests carrying trays of food and wine.
Elena remained in the eastern hall until Madam Celeste ordered her to deliver a bottle of wine to the private study.
She had just reached the corridor when she heard voices behind the half-open door.
"Isadora is the sensible choice," Beta Rowan said. "Her family controls the northern trade routes, and the marriage would end the border disputes."
"I know what the marriage offers," Driven replied.
"Then why are you hesitating?"
A pause followed.
"My wolf has been restless."
Elena stopped.
"Since when?"
"Since yesterday."
Her breath caught.
Driven continued, his voice lower now. "I sensed something unusual around that girl. Elena Moonveil."
Rowan sounded incredulous. "The wolfless servant?"
"Watch your tone."
"Forgive me, Alpha. But surely you don't believe she's your mate."
Silence.
Elena's heart hammered.
Then Driven spoke.
"I don't believe in coincidences. I want her watched until the ceremony. If she has some connection to the disturbances near our borders, I need to know."
Elena stepped backward.
The bottle slipped against the tray, clinking softly.
Inside the study, the conversation stopped.
"Who's there?" Driven demanded.
Elena turned to flee, but the door swung open.
Driven stood before her, his expression cold.
For a moment, his eyes locked on hers. That same strange pressure gripped her chest, pulling her toward him even as every instinct told her to run.
His nostrils flared.
The Alpha took a slow step closer.
"Tell me something, Elena."
She forced herself to stand still.
"Yes, Alpha?"
His gaze dropped to her wrist.
"Why does my wolf recognize your scent?"
Elena's blood turned cold.
Before she could answer, Driven's wolf surged beneath his skin. His eyes flashed gold, and a low growl escaped his throat.
Then, from somewhere deep inside the estate, a howl rose into the night.
Driven went completely still.
It was not the howl of a wolf.
It was something older.
Something that made every wolf in the hall fall silent.
And Elena's wrist began to burn.
