Chapter 3 The Scent Of Destiny
Chapter 3: The Scent of Destiny
The Alpha's wolf tried to force its way out in front of twenty witnesses.
Driven Veyl staggered, gripping the doorframe so hard that the wood cracked beneath his fingers. His golden eyes burned, and a growl rolled through his chest, silencing the guards in the corridor.
Elena Moonveil stood frozen before him, the wine tray trembling in her hands.
Then the strange howl sounded again.
Every wolf in the estate turned toward the forest.
Every wolf except Elena.
She heard nothing unusual in the cry itself. What frightened her was the answering voice inside her head.
Find him.
The words were faint but unmistakable.
Elena dropped the tray.
Glass shattered across the floor.
Driven's head snapped toward her. For one breathless moment, his expression held something she had never seen on his face before.
Fear.
Not fear of an enemy. Not fear of losing a battle.
Fear of her.
"What are you?" he demanded.
Elena stared at him. "I'm the servant you ordered to bring you wine."
"Don't play games with me."
"I'm not playing anything!"
Her voice cracked against the corridor walls. She hated that it did. She hated the way his guards watched her as if she had become a threat simply by standing in front of their Alpha.
Driven stepped closer.
The pressure in Elena's chest intensified. Heat spread through her veins, gathering around her wrist beneath the sleeve of her dress.
He inhaled sharply.
His wolf growled again.
"Leave us," Driven ordered.
The guards exchanged uncertain glances.
"Alpha, should we-"
"Now!"
They retreated immediately.
Elena wished she could follow them.
Driven closed the door behind him, leaving them alone in the study. He circled her slowly, studying her as though she were a puzzle he intended to break apart.
"Yesterday, I smelled something unusual around you," he said. "Tonight, my wolf is behaving like a creature that has lost its mind."
"Perhaps you should see the healer."
His expression darkened. "You think this is funny?"
"No. I think you're frightening me, and I don't understand why."
The honesty in her answer seemed to catch him off guard.
For a moment, his features softened. Then he reached toward her wrist.
Elena pulled away.
"Don't touch me."
Driven stopped.
He was accustomed to obedience. Even older warriors lowered their eyes when he spoke. Yet this wolfless girl had just refused him without hesitation.
His gaze settled on her face.
"Show me your wrist."
"No."
His jaw tightened. "That wasn't a request."
"And I am not your property."
The words escaped before she could consider their consequences.
Silence filled the study.
Driven's wolf went unnaturally quiet.
Elena's heart pounded so hard she could feel it in her throat. She expected him to punish her, perhaps summon the guards or have her thrown from the estate.
Instead, he stepped back.
"Go to your quarters," he ordered. "Do not leave the estate without permission."
Elena stared at him in disbelief.
"Am I under arrest?"
"You're under my protection."
"I didn't ask for it."
"That doesn't mean you don't need it."
She lifted her chin. "Then explain what you're protecting me from."
For the first time, Driven had no immediate answer.
Elena seized the opportunity to leave. She walked out before he could change his mind, refusing to let him see how badly her hands were shaking.
Behind her, the Alpha remained motionless.
His wolf was no longer snarling.
It was listening.
---
The next morning, the training grounds were crowded with warriors preparing for the Moon Ceremony.
Elena had been sent to deliver fresh bandages to the royal physician, whose temporary quarters overlooked the courtyard. She intended to complete her errand quickly and return to the servants' wing before anyone noticed her.
Then a commotion rose from the training arena.
"Again!" Driven commanded.
A young warrior charged at him with a wooden sword.
Driven dodged the first strike, blocked the second, and disarmed his opponent with a swift twist of his wrist. The warrior landed on his back, groaning as laughter rippled through the crowd.
"You're telegraphing every move," Driven told him. "An enemy will read you before you reach striking distance."
The warrior scrambled upright and bowed.
Elena tried to slip past the gathered spectators.
She almost succeeded.
"Moonveil!"
Her shoulders stiffened.
Driven stood in the center of the arena, his sword resting against his shoulder.
"Come here."
Several warriors turned to look at her.
Elena approached reluctantly, stopping just outside the training circle.
"Yes, Alpha?"
"Enter the arena."
She glanced at the warriors, then back at him. "Why?"
A murmur traveled through the crowd.
Driven's eyes narrowed. "Are you questioning my order?"
"I'm asking what you expect me to do. I don't have a wolf, and I don't know how to fight."
"Then we shall establish whether you are as helpless as everyone claims."
Heat rushed into Elena's cheeks.
He had turned her into entertainment.
"I have work to finish."
"Your work can wait."
"And if I refuse?"
Driven lowered his sword.
"Then you'll demonstrate to everyone that even a simple command is beyond you."
Humiliation crawled up Elena's neck. She could leave and allow him to call her a coward, or obey and risk becoming the day's entertainment.
She stepped into the arena.
"Fine. What do you want?"
Driven tossed her a wooden training blade.
"Defend yourself."
Elena barely caught it.
The crowd laughed.
She tightened her grip, wishing the ground would open beneath her feet.
Driven circled her. "Keep your eyes on me."
She did.
He attacked without warning.
Elena raised her blade instinctively. The wooden weapons collided, sending a sharp jolt through her arms. Before she could recover, Driven swept her legs from beneath her.
She struck the ground hard.
Laughter erupted.
Pain flared through her hip, but Elena forced herself upright.
"Again," Driven said.
She attacked first this time.
He blocked her strike effortlessly, twisted her weapon from her hands, and sent it skidding across the dirt.
"Your anger makes you careless."
Elena's cheeks burned.
"And your arrogance makes you unpleasant."
The laughter died.
Driven stared at her.
Somewhere beneath his skin, his wolf stirred with what felt disturbingly like approval.
He hated it.
"Pick up your weapon," he ordered.
Elena retrieved the blade. Her fingers hurt, and dust clung to her dress. She knew she could not defeat him. He was stronger, faster, and trained to recognize every weakness in an opponent.
But she could refuse to give him the satisfaction of watching her surrender.
She raised the weapon again.
Driven lunged.
This time, Elena moved before she understood why.
She ducked beneath his arm, turned sharply, and struck his shoulder with the flat of her blade.
The sound cracked through the arena.
Silence followed.
Driven looked down at the spot she had hit.
Elena stared at her own hand.
She hadn't planned the movement. She hadn't even seen his attack clearly.
She had simply known where he would be.
Driven turned toward her slowly.
"Who taught you that?"
"No one."
"Don't lie to me."
"I'm not!"
He advanced, and Elena backed away. His expression had changed. The contempt was gone, replaced by an intensity that made her skin prickle.
He attacked again.
Elena blocked him.
Another strike followed. She parried it, pivoted, and narrowly avoided his next blow.
The crowd began to stir.
Driven moved faster.
Elena's body responded faster still.
For several impossible seconds, she matched him. She could sense the direction of his attacks before his muscles completed the movement, as if an invisible thread connected them.
Then he feinted left and struck toward her right shoulder.
She blocked instinctively.
Their wooden blades met with a violent crack.
A silver spark burst between them.
Driven recoiled.
The weapon slipped from Elena's fingers and struck the ground.
A wave of power swept through the arena. Dust rose in a circle around her boots, and the air filled with the sharp scent of rain on stone.
Every wolf present lowered their heads.
Some dropped to one knee.
Others staggered backward, clutching their chests.
Elena could not move.
A silver crescent blazed beneath the skin of her wrist.
Driven stared at it, his face drained of color.
His wolf rose inside him, no longer content to remain hidden.
Mate.
The word struck his mind with the force of a physical blow.
Driven's breath caught.
No.
It couldn't be.
Not her.
Not the wolfless servant his council would never accept, the woman who could destroy everything he had planned.
He took a step toward her.
Elena flinched.
That small movement stopped him more effectively than any weapon.
She was frightened of him.
And his wolf wanted to pull her close, shield her from every watching eye, and bare its teeth at anyone who dared approach.
Driven clenched his fists until his nails bit into his palms.
He would not let instinct control him.
Not when so much was at stake.
"Everyone leave," he commanded.
No one moved.
His eyes flashed gold.
"NOW!"
The warriors scattered.
Elena remained in the arena, breathing unevenly. The silver glow had faded, but the sensation beneath her skin lingered.
Driven approached cautiously.
"Elena, listen to me."
She backed away.
"What happened to me?"
He could not answer without admitting what his wolf had revealed.
Instead, he said, "You will come with me."
"No."
His expression hardened. "You don't understand the danger you're in."
"Then tell me!"
He looked toward the spectators leaving the grounds. Several had witnessed the silver light. Some were whispering. Others were staring at Elena with the kind of fear usually reserved for monsters.
Driven knew rumors would spread before sunset.
If the council learned what had happened, they would demand answers. If the Frostvale delegation discovered that the Alpha's wolf had recognized a mate, the political alliance could collapse.
He had spent years building his future.
He would not allow one impossible bond to tear it apart.
"Return to your quarters," he said. "Say nothing about what happened here."
Elena's eyes widened.
"You're ordering me to hide it?"
"I'm trying to prevent a disaster."
"Or protect your reputation?"
His silence answered her.
Pain flashed across her face before she could hide it.
"Of course," she whispered. "You don't care what happens to me. You only care about what people might think."
She turned away.
For one moment, Driven almost called her back.
His wolf pressed against his mind, furious at the distance between them.
He ignored it.
"Elena."
She stopped but did not look around.
"Stay away from the ceremony grounds tomorrow."
Her shoulders stiffened.
"Gladly, Alpha."
She walked away.
Driven watched her leave, feeling the bond pull tighter with every step she took.
He had spent his life believing that every problem could be solved through strength, strategy, or sacrifice.
But as Elena disappeared through the gates, one terrible certainty settled over him.
His wolf had chosen her.
And for the first time in his life, Driven Veyl was afraid of what his own heart might demand.
---
Elena did not return to the servants' quarters.
She went straight to the old washroom behind the kitchens, locked the door, and pushed up her sleeve.
The crescent had returned.
This time, a second mark had appeared beneath it: three delicate lines forming the shape of a crown.
Elena touched the symbol.
A burst of pain shot through her arm.
She gasped as a voice rose inside her mind, clearer than before.
The Alpha has recognized you.
Elena gripped the edge of the basin.
"Who are you?" she whispered.
The question is not who I am.
The silver marks brightened.
It is what you are.
A vision struck her without warning.
A vast hall stood beneath a blood-red moon. Wolves knelt before a woman wearing a silver crown, their heads bowed not in fear but reverence. Behind her rose a throne carved from pale stone.
Then the scene changed.
Flames consumed the hall.
The crowned woman screamed as soldiers dragged her from the throne. A child cried somewhere in the darkness.
Elena saw the child's wrist.
A silver crescent.
Her own wrist.
She stumbled away from the basin, choking on a sob.
The vision vanished, leaving her trembling in the empty room.
Outside, a bell rang three times.
The Moon Ceremony was drawing near.
Elena stared at her reflection, unable to recognize the frightened girl looking back at her.
Then someone knocked on the door.
"Elena?" Mira called urgently. "Open up!"
Elena hurried to the entrance.
Mira slipped inside, pale and breathless.
"What happened?" Elena asked.
Mira locked the door behind her.
"The Alpha's council has issued an order. They've been told about the incident at the training grounds."
Elena's stomach dropped.
"What order?"
Mira swallowed.
"They want you brought before them tonight."
"Why?"
Mira looked at the silver crescent glowing beneath Elena's sleeve.
"Because they believe you're carrying a forbidden power."
A heavy knock shook the door.
Then a man's voice rang through the wood.
"Elena Moonveil, by order of Alpha Driven Veyl, you are to surrender yourself immediately."
Mira grabbed Elena's hand.
"Whatever happens, don't let them take you without asking why."
The door shuddered beneath another blow.
And inside Elena's mind, the ancient voice whispered one final warning.
Do not let them see your crown.
