Chapter 2
Nightclaw Pack - The Alpha's Den
Elle Davenport lay in the cold bed, sheets tangled around her limbs, her mind a storm of questions she couldn't answer.
Her wolf was restless, pacing inside her like a caged animal. The mark on her collarbone still burned faintly, as if it were a live wire sparking beneath her skin. It wasn't the pain that unnerved her, but the sense of... rightness.
The bond.
Her mate.
Elle squeezed her eyes shut and buried her face in the pillow. This was supposed to be a mission. A brief foray into enemy territory. Find answers, return home.
But this? This connection, this pull toward Brandon, was something she wasn't prepared for.
The knock at the door was soft but insistent.
Elle sat up quickly, heart racing, and tried to shake off the dizziness that came with her thoughts. The last thing she wanted was to see him. But he was Alpha. And she was here-under his roof. Whether she liked it or not, they would have to talk.
She swung her legs over the side of the bed, slipped on her shoes, and walked to the door, bracing herself. She flung it open.
Brandon stood there, tall and imposing, but his face was unreadable. He wasn't in his usual Alpha gear-no armor, no weapons. Just a simple black tunic and leather pants that seemed to amplify the dark, predatory air around him.
"You look terrible," she said, a little too harsh.
Brandon smirked. "You don't look so hot yourself."
Elle folded her arms across her chest. "What do you want?"
His smirk faded, replaced by something far more serious. "We need to talk."
"Now?"
"I thought you were staying the night," he replied, leaning against the doorframe. His voice was steady, but there was an undercurrent of tension. "That means we talk."
Elle didn't back down. "Fine. What's so important?"
"You." He didn't flinch at her sharp tone. "We need to understand what this bond means. And I think it's time we both realized the stakes."
Elle didn't want to admit it, but his words hit harder than she cared to admit. She wasn't sure what this bond meant either, but it scared her. Not just the mystical connection-it was what it represented. The two of them. Ashbane. Nightclaw. Packs torn apart by bloodshed and resentment. The idea that fate, or whatever cosmic force existed, had chosen them to unite wasn't just an inconvenience. It was a nightmare.
"Look," she said, taking a step back and gesturing for him to enter. "You don't have to lecture me. I know what I'm up against. But we both know the real threat isn't the bond. It's whatever is lurking out there-whatever killed your cousin."
Brandon walked in, not waiting for her invitation. He closed the door behind him with a soft click, then turned toward her. "We don't know what it is. We don't know who it is. But I'll tell you this: that thing isn't just after our packs. It's after something else."
Elle's brow furrowed. "What are you saying?"
"I think it's targeting our bloodlines," he said slowly. "That man, the one we saw earlier-he knew our names. He knew about the bond before I even did. And he's not the only one. Whatever is hunting us, it's using us as pawns."
Elle's heart sank. "Pawns? For what?"
"I don't know yet. But I'll find out," he said with fierce determination. "And if it means I have to drag you into the heart of Nightclaw territory to get answers, then that's exactly what I'll do."
Elle narrowed her eyes, unwilling to show how his words affected her. She was here on her terms. This wasn't about him leading her around. This wasn't about the bond.
This was about survival.
She inhaled sharply. "Fine. But if you think for one second that I'm going to play nice with you just because of this bond, you're mistaken."
Brandon smirked again, and for a moment, she saw a flicker of the cocky, Alpha side she'd expected from him. "I wouldn't expect anything less from you, Elle. But just know this-whether you like it or not, we're stuck with each other. And that's going to make this whole thing a hell of a lot more complicated."
Elle's chest tightened, but she refused to let it show. "We'll see about that."
She stepped past him, walking toward the door. "In the morning, we'll go to the ravine. I want to see what's left of your cousin."
Brandon raised an eyebrow. "You sure about that?"
"I'm sure," Elle said, her tone hard. "If we're going to figure this out, we need to see the evidence for ourselves."
He hesitated before nodding. "I'll arrange for the guards to accompany us."
"Good," she said, then added over her shoulder, "And Brandon?"
He turned to look at her, eyes narrowed. "Yeah?"
"Don't think for a second that this changes anything."
Brandon didn't respond. He just stepped aside as she walked out of the room, shutting the door softly behind her. The wind outside was colder than she remembered, biting at her exposed skin as she walked toward the designated meeting spot near the cliffs. The pack's compound was a shadow against the starless sky, looming with an eerie sense of foreboding.
Elle's wolf paced uneasily within her, but Elle couldn't tell if it was because of the bond or because of the strange sense of dread that gnawed at her gut. Every instinct she had told her to run. To leave. But she couldn't.
Not when the answers were so close.
Brandon appeared beside her as if he'd read her mind, his presence imposing even in the darkness. "You look like you're going to jump off the cliff."
Elle let out a breath, trying to shake off the feeling. "Not yet. But if we don't figure this out soon, I might."
Brandon chuckled, but the sound was low, serious. "We'll figure it out. Together."
Elle stopped, looking at him sharply. There it was again. That pull between them. That connection she couldn't deny.
But she refused to give in. Not yet.
"We'll see," she muttered, continuing to walk. "For now, just show me the damn ravine." As they reached the edge of the ravine, the chilling scent of death hit Elle first. The remnants of what had once been a man-the flesh and bones torn apart by something no wolf could do-lay scattered across the rocks below. The blood was still fresh, the ground soaked in dark crimson.
Elle's stomach turned. She could see the gnarled remains of Brandon's cousin, and the stark horror of it twisted something deep inside her. Whatever had done this wasn't human. It wasn't even animal.
It was something other.
Brandon knelt beside the body, his face taut with anger. "This is what we're up against."
Elle stepped closer, her eyes scanning the blood-streaked rocks. There were deep claw marks along the boulders. But the pattern... it didn't make sense. The creature that had done this wasn't just a beast. It was something cunning.
"This doesn't feel like a rogue wolf," Elle murmured. "This is something far worse."
Brandon clenched his fists. "Then we'll hunt it down. And I don't care what it costs."
Elle nodded grimly. "We'll hunt it together."
But as the wind howled around them, she knew one thing for sure: the bond between them might be fate, but it wouldn't save them from the coming storm.
Nightclaw Pack - The Ravine
Elle stood at the edge of the ravine, staring down at the mangled remains of Brandon's cousin. The air was thick with the metallic scent of blood, and every fiber of her being screamed at her to turn away. But she didn't. She couldn't.
The shadows around them deepened as the moonlight glinted off the blood-soaked rocks below, highlighting the carnage that had once been a life- a life that was now reduced to a mere memory in the form of dismembered limbs and shattered bones.
Brandon crouched down, his fingers brushing against the torn fabric of his cousin's clothes. The sorrow that flickered through his eyes was quick to fade, replaced by a fierce, calculating determination. "This wasn't a rogue. No rogue could do this."
Elle nodded, though her heart twisted. Her wolf clawed at the inside of her chest, sensing the danger, the presence of something darker than what they had initially imagined. "What kind of creature are we dealing with, then?"
"A monster," Brandon said, his voice low and controlled. "Something that has been hunting us, hiding in the shadows. This... This isn't just a random attack. It's strategic."
Elle couldn't ignore the cold shiver that ran down her spine. The pack had always known of rogue wolves, of lone alphas or wild creatures that roamed their territories, but nothing had ever felt like this. It was as if something... more intelligent, more dangerous, was pulling the strings.
Brandon stood up, and Elle followed his movements, her eyes scanning the ravine. It was a steep drop, the jagged rocks cutting through the ground like the teeth of some great beast. The thought that whatever had done this could be watching them from the shadows made her skin crawl.
"We need to get back to the pack," Brandon said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "I'll send a team out to investigate. This goes beyond just me and you now. This is about protecting the entire pack."
Elle opened her mouth to argue, to demand that they search further, but she saw the weight of his resolve. There was no convincing him to stay here any longer. He had made up his mind, and she knew better than to waste time trying to change it.
For the first time in their conversation, Elle let herself show just a hint of vulnerability. "What if it comes after us? After you?"
Brandon's gaze softened, his lips pressed into a thin line as if weighing his words carefully. "It won't. Not while I'm here."
Elle's heart skipped. The way he said it-so certain, so calm-struck something deep inside her. It was the same sense of protectiveness that came with the bond, but something about it made her feel both comforted and... trapped.
"Fine," she said after a moment of silence, her voice quieter now. "We'll go back. But we can't let our guard down. Whatever this is, it's not over."
Brandon nodded once, then turned to lead her back toward the path that wound through the trees toward the pack's compound. His presence beside her was like a steady pulse, his strength emanating from every step. Elle couldn't deny the strange, magnetic pull that seemed to draw her closer to him, despite the storm brewing in her chest.
They walked in silence for a few minutes, the tension between them thick, until Brandon spoke again.
"You know, I never expected this to happen."
Elle glanced over at him, raising an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
He looked ahead, his expression a mix of frustration and confusion. "The bond. I've spent my whole life training to be Alpha, to lead this pack. And now, it's like everything's been turned upside down." He paused, then added, almost as if to himself, "I was never supposed to be tied to you."
Elle's stomach tightened. His words stung, but they weren't unexpected. "And what, you think this is just as difficult for me?" she shot back, her voice sharp. "You think I've always wanted to be tied to the Alpha of Nightclaw?"
Brandon glanced at her, his eyes searching her face for something. "I didn't say that."
"I know what you meant," she snapped, her frustration bubbling to the surface. "I never asked for this bond. I didn't choose it, and I don't have time for it."
For a moment, there was silence again, only the rustling of leaves in the wind to fill the void. Then, Brandon spoke, his voice quieter now. "Neither of us chose it. But here we are."
Elle's wolf stirred inside her, sensing the emotions that swirled in the air around them. She fought to keep her composure, but the unease settled in her chest like a weight she couldn't shake off. She needed answers. She needed control over her own fate, and she wasn't sure if she could trust anyone-least of all the Alpha she was now bound to, in more ways than one. By the time they reached the compound, the sky had darkened further, and a chill had settled into the air. The pack's guards were stationed at every entrance, their eyes watchful and alert as Brandon led Elle through the main gates.
The packhouse loomed before them, its stone walls fortified and solid. The scent of fresh food and the murmur of voices reached Elle's ears as they approached the main door.
"Get some rest," Brandon ordered, his tone still firm, but his eyes softer now. "We'll need you sharp tomorrow. I'll send word when I have more information."
Elle nodded but didn't move. There was something lingering in the air-something unsettled. She couldn't tell if it was the bond, the tension between her and Brandon, or the danger closing in around them, but she felt like she was walking on the edge of a precipice.
"I'll stay in my room tonight," she said, her voice cool. "I need time to think."
Brandon looked like he was about to argue, but then he stopped himself. "Understood."
He turned to leave, but Elle called out after him.
"Brandon."
He paused, looking back over his shoulder.
"I don't trust you," she said bluntly. "And I don't trust this bond. But I will protect this pack, and I will find out who's behind this."
His expression softened, and for a moment, something unspoken passed between them-an understanding, a silent agreement that neither of them was ready to acknowledge.
"I'll hold you to that," he said, his voice low.
Elle watched him disappear into the shadows, her thoughts racing. The bond between them was undeniable. But that didn't mean she had to like it.
As she turned toward her room, the weight of her decision hit her. Tomorrow would bring more questions. More danger. But Elle Davenport wasn't one to back down. Not from a challenge. Not from an enemy. And not from the Alpha who was somehow now a part of her fate.
