Chapter 3
Elle Davenport awoke to the sound of soft knocks on her door. Her heart was still heavy with the weight of last night's encounter, and the unease that had gripped her chest didn't seem to fade with the morning light. For a moment, she lay still, listening to the knock again. Three short raps followed by a long pause- clear, measured, insistent.
It was probably Brandon, she thought. His presence had already become a fixture in her mind, even if she wasn't sure she liked it.
Sighing, Elle swung her legs off the bed and stood, stretching. Her body ached slightly, tension from the previous night's events still lingering in her muscles. The pull of the bond she shared with Brandon had been overwhelming. She hadn't wanted to admit it, but she could feel it-the magnetic draw. It was like something she couldn't outrun, even if she wanted to. Which, to her dismay, she didn't.
The knock came again, followed by a quiet voice on the other side. "Elle, are you awake? It's time for the briefing."
Elle closed her eyes, taking a deep breath before answering. "I'll be out in a minute."
She stood in front of the full-length mirror, staring at her reflection for a few moments, as if searching for the strength she needed. Her long, dark hair was tangled from sleep, her pale skin almost ghostly under the morning light, but her sharp green eyes-those were a reminder that she was a fighter, a force to be reckoned with.
Her wolf stirred, feeling the subtle shift in the air. Something was coming. She could feel it. Something dark. Something dangerous. Her mind flashed back to the body they had found last night-the body of Brandon's cousin. The same eerie feeling crawled under her skin, making her wolf growl low in warning.
Grabbing a loose shirt from the closet and a pair of jeans, Elle dressed quickly, mentally preparing for the day ahead. She needed information, and she needed it fast.
The moment she stepped outside her room, she was met by Brandon, his gaze sharp as ever. His eyes swept over her, taking in her appearance, though he quickly masked whatever emotions flashed through his face. His strong presence seemed to fill the hallway, making the walls feel tighter, as if they were closing in on her.
"You're ready," he said flatly, though his eyes lingered for just a moment longer on her.
Elle nodded curtly. "I'm here. Let's get this over with."
They moved through the packhouse together, their footsteps echoing in the stone hallway. The packhouse was busy this early in the morning-wolves were already training, the smell of coffee and food wafting from the kitchen. It was clear that Brandon's Alpha status had everyone moving with purpose, and yet, there was a strange tension in the air, like something was about to snap.
The meeting room was located on the second floor, in a more secure part of the building. Elle followed Brandon inside, where several key members of the pack were already gathered around the long table. Marcus, the pack's beta, was sitting near the head of the table, a look of frustration etched on his face.
"Brandon," Marcus said as they entered, his voice rough, his usual calm demeanor replaced by urgency. "We have a problem."
Elle took a seat at the far end of the table, crossing her arms and watching as Brandon stepped up to the front. He didn't sit but instead stood with his arms folded, looking every bit the Alpha he was. His eyes flicked briefly to her before he turned his attention to the others.
"The attack last night-" Brandon began, but Marcus cut him off.
"Isn't an isolated incident. This is just the beginning."
Elle's brow furrowed. "What are you talking about?" Her voice was sharp, and for a moment, everyone turned to look at her. Brandon didn't speak, but she could feel his gaze on her, calm but calculating, as if waiting for her reaction.
Marcus gave her a steady look before continuing. "There have been reports from other packs. Not just here, but all across the region. Wolves are disappearing. Bodies are being found, torn apart. Not in the same way as last night, but there's a pattern emerging."
"Wolves disappearing?" Elle repeated, her voice tight with disbelief. "Are you suggesting that someone is hunting our kind?"
"Yes," Marcus said, his tone heavy with the weight of his words. "Someone or something. We don't know yet, but it's clear that whatever is happening is systematic."
Brandon stepped forward then, his eyes scanning the room as he spoke. "We can't waste any more time. Marcus, gather the scouts. I want every pack near us on high alert. We need to figure out who or what is behind this before it reaches us."
Marcus nodded, his face grim. "We're already doing that. But the truth is, we're getting nowhere fast. Whoever or whatever this is, they're smart. They know how to cover their tracks."
Elle's wolf stirred again, the gnawing sense of danger making her feel restless. "This is bigger than just a few attacks. We're talking about an organized effort."
"Exactly," Brandon said, his voice low. "And that's why we need to work together, all of us. We can't afford to trust anyone outside this room."
Elle's gaze flicked to Brandon's face again, and something about the intensity in his expression made her stomach tighten. She couldn't help but notice the way the room shifted with his words, the way the pack seemed to lean on him for direction. It made sense. He was the Alpha. He was supposed to be the one leading them, protecting them. But the words didn't sit right with her. There was something off about the whole situation.
As if sensing her unease, Brandon met her eyes, his gaze unwavering. "I'll be heading out with a team this afternoon. We'll start scouting the surrounding territories. Marcus, I want you to take charge here. Elle," he paused, his eyes locking onto hers, "you're coming with me."
Her heart skipped, but she quickly regained her composure. "I have other plans," she said, her voice laced with annoyance. "I didn't sign up to be your sidekick, Brandon."
Brandon didn't flinch, his gaze steady as ever. "No. But you're the best tracker we have. And right now, we need that."
Elle's wolf growled inside her chest, her irritation rising. "I'm not your tool."
"I'm not asking you to be," Brandon replied. "I'm asking you to be part of the pack. And right now, this is a team effort."
Elle's eyes narrowed, her teeth biting down on the words she wanted to say. She was about to argue, to refuse, but something in Brandon's eyes stopped her.
She saw a flicker of vulnerability behind his steely exterior. He wasn't just asking because he needed a tracker. He was asking because he trusted her. And that, she wasn't ready for.
"Fine," she said after a long pause, standing up from the chair. "I'll help. But don't think for one second that I'm doing this for you."
Brandon's lips twitched into a small smile, though it didn't reach his eyes. "Wouldn't dream of it."
Elle and Brandon stood side by side as the briefing wrapped up. The pack members around the table murmured, their voices a blend of uncertainty and determination. Elle's mind buzzed with thoughts of what had been revealed, and she couldn't shake the feeling that something deeper was at play here, something she wasn't seeing.
Brandon, ever the Alpha, gave his final orders. "Everyone, be ready. I'll be leaving within the hour. We need eyes everywhere. We move out at sundown."
Marcus nodded in acknowledgment, and the others filtered out of the room, leaving Elle and Brandon standing together. For a moment, neither of them spoke, the silence between them thick with unspoken words.
Elle finally broke the stillness, her voice clipped. "You're not telling us everything."
Brandon's head tilted slightly, his sharp gaze locking onto hers. "What do you mean?"
"You're hiding something," she pressed, her eyes narrowing. "This isn't just about the attacks. There's something more, isn't there?"
He didn't immediately answer, but Elle could see the way his jaw tightened, the subtle tension in his shoulders. It wasn't the first time she'd sensed something beneath the surface with him, but this was different. His calm façade had cracks in it, and she wasn't about to let him ignore it.
"I don't have time for this, Elle," he said, his voice low but controlled. "The pack needs me. I need to get things in motion."
Elle didn't back down. "We're supposed to be allies, right? I won't stand by while you keep things from me. I'm in this with you now."
Brandon's eyes darkened slightly, his lips pressing into a thin line. For a moment, Elle thought he might push her away, might tell her she wasn't ready to know the truth. But instead, he took a deep breath and ran a hand through his dark hair, his gaze flicking to the door.
"I didn't want to involve you in this, Elle," he said quietly, almost as if to himself. "Not because I don't trust you, but because you're too important. I can't risk you getting hurt."
Her pulse quickened at his words, but she refused to let him off the hook so easily. "I'm not some fragile human, Brandon. You don't get to decide what's best for me."
Brandon's eyes locked onto hers, his expression softening ever so slightly. "It's not that simple."
She crossed her arms, refusing to back down. "Then explain it to me. I have a right to know."
He sighed, clearly conflicted. "Fine," he muttered. "There's something... someone, who's been hunting our kind for years. They've been moving in the shadows, targeting the weaker packs first. But now they're making a move on the stronger ones. Ours included."
Elle's brow furrowed. "Who is it?"
"That's the problem," Brandon said, his voice low. "We don't know. Whoever it is, they're using magic, something ancient and dangerous. It's been hard to track, and we've lost too many to whatever power they control."
Elle's stomach dropped as the weight of his words settled over her. "And you think it's only going to get worse?"
"I know it will," Brandon said. "That's why I can't let you-any of you-get caught up in it. I'm not just leading a pack; I'm leading our survival."
Elle could feel her heart pounding in her chest, her wolf scratching at her consciousness. There was something about Brandon's intensity, the way he was taking on all the responsibility, that stirred something in her. She could sense the danger surrounding them both, the shadows closing in.
"You're not alone in this, you know," she said quietly. "If we're going to fight this, we fight together."
Brandon met her gaze, and for a brief moment, she thought she saw a flicker of relief in his eyes. But just as quickly, it was gone. He stood straighter, pushing aside the vulnerability that had slipped through moments ago.
"I'm not here to be your partner, Elle," he said, his tone turning more businesslike. "I'm here to protect this pack. That's all."
Elle clenched her jaw, fighting the surge of frustration that rose in her chest. She wanted to argue, to remind him that she didn't need his protection, but she held back. This wasn't the time to get caught up in the personal side of things. She could feel the urgency of the situation pressing down on them both.
"I'm still coming with you," she said, her voice firm. "You can't keep me out of this."
Brandon didn't respond immediately, his eyes studying her for a long, tense moment. He finally gave a sharp nod, his voice hardening. "Fine. But don't get in my way."
Elle didn't flinch. "I won't."
They shared one final look before Brandon turned on his heel and walked out of the room, leaving her standing there alone with her thoughts. Elle's mind raced as she processed everything she'd just learned. There was more at play here than just rogue attacks. There was something deeper, something darker, that was pulling them all into its grasp. And Elle wasn't going to sit idly by while it happened.
As she walked back to her room to gather her things, she couldn't shake the feeling that the real battle was only just beginning. And somehow, she knew that Brandon was right about one thing: there was a shadow moving through the world, one that neither of them would be able to outrun.
