Chapter 1
After completing my mission, I finally gained my freedom.
I bought plane tickets, planning to take my husband and daughter on a family trip.
Right outside our private dining booth, I overheard my daughter speaking.
“I do not like Mommy. When is she going to leave?”
“I like Godmother Clarissa.”
“She said once Mommy leaves, we can be together forever.”
Garrett gently stroked Maisie’s hair, speaking with a tenderness he had never shown me.
“How about we bring your godmother back home to live with us?”
Maisie jumped up and down with joy.
I tore up their tickets and headed to the airport alone.
I was not sad at all.
After all, I had transmigrated into this world solely to save my twins, who had died in a car crash back home.
1.
Today was my birthday, and it was also the day my mission was marked as complete.
I booked a table at the Undersea Aquarium Restaurant that my daughter, Maisie, loved most.
Picking up her gift took some extra time.
The private booth door was slightly ajar, and I heard Garrett and Maisie talking inside.
Maisie was holding a phone on FaceTime, her voice sweet and bubbly.
“Godmother, why aren’t you here yet? Do not forget the cupcakes you promised!”
Maisie’s godmother was Clarissa Gray, Garrett’s childhood sweetheart.
Since her divorce and return to the States two years ago, they had grown very close.
While I wondered why Clarissa was attending our private family dinner, Maisie crawled into Garrett’s arms.
“Daddy, when can we live with Godmother?”
“I do not like Mommy at all. She always argues with Godmother.”
“Every time I want to see Godmother, I have to sit in the car for so long. Can’t she just move into our house?”
Garrett gently stroked Maisie’s hair, his tone softer than anything he had ever directed at me.
“How about we bring your godmother home to live with us tomorrow?”
Maisie bounced with excitement, shouting gleefully.
“Yay! That’s amazing! That way, Godmother can tuck me in and read me bedtime stories every single night.”
When Maisie was a toddler, she refused to sleep until I started telling her bedtime stories.
That was the only way she would calm down and go to sleep on schedule.
Two years ago, however, she suddenly hated my stories.
She would throw tantrums, push me out of her room, and snap at me.
“I want Godmother to read me princess stories! I do not want Mommy! I want Godmother with me!”
No matter how I explained that a mother and a godmother were different, she insisted she only wanted Clarissa.
The child I had carried and birthed had fallen in love with another woman in just a few short months.
Listening to the father and daughter plot how to replace me while holding the cake in my hands, I felt ridiculous.
Fortunately, I was never here for them in the first place.
