Chapter 3

The other weapons went crazy with me. Eden was harsh, but it was our only true home, a place that would live in our hearts forever.

We rebelled against Cyrus.

And Vance betrayed us.

Just when we thought we had won, Vance poisoned us. Four and Six were killed. I ended up with a severed tendon in my hand, but with the help of the border patrol, I managed to save Three and Seven.

Shaking off the memory, I pulled my sleeve down to hide the scar and locked the door.

The attendant and the butcher were already waiting for me downstairs.

“Boss, I’ve tracked them. The people who took Daisy are from the Black Whale Gang, the most notorious hit squad in Westgate City,” said Seven. Before she was an internet cafe manager, she was the world’s top-tier hacker. Tracking a bunch of guys like that was child’s play.

Dexter, the butcher, wasn’t wearing his uniform―he was in his usual cargo shorts and a t-shirt, but a heavy tactical pack was strapped to his back. He caught me looking and scratched his head, embarrassed. “The food’s been too good since retirement. My old tactical vest doesn’t fit anymore.”

I nodded, understanding.

Mrs. Gable, my neighbor, stood nearby and finally couldn't help but ask, “Jade, where are you going? And why are you dressed like that?”

“Mrs. Gable, you’re just in time.” I pulled a key from my pocket and handed it to her. “I have an emergency, I’ll be gone for two days. Could you keep an eye on my deli?”

“Oh, sure. But Jade, what’s going on?”

“It’s urgent. I’m going to bring my daughter home.”

With that settled, I put on my black Ray-Bans. With Seven and Dexter trailing me, just like the old days, I walked out of the quiet apartment complex.

Vance, since you came looking for me, I’m going to make sure we settle our accounts once and for all.
