Chapter 3

The first time I caught Grant cheating was late at night.

I walked through the front door and saw them.

Grant was lying on the sofa, and Rainey was sitting on the floor right next to his legs. They were far too close.

She was feeding him a grape, and Grant leaned down to take it from her fingers.

They were flirting right in front of me.

When they saw me, Grant's relaxed expression vanished, replaced by a mix of shock and annoyance.

Rainey looked up at me, the red marks on her neck still fresh.

A flash of provocation crossed her eyes, so quick I almost thought I imagined it.

"Oh, you're back!" she chirped, her voice soft and innocent.

"Grant and I were just watching a movie. He told me about this one ages ago, and we finally got a chance to see it together."

"Who told you that you could sit there?"

I cut her off, my voice tight. I stared at where her body was pressed against Grant's leg.

Grant frowned and sat up, his tone harsh.

"Sienna, what is wrong with your attitude? Rainey is my guest."

"A guest?" I took a step forward, pointing at her clothes. "A guest wears my silk pajamas? A guest..."

I choked on my words. The image of her feeding him that grape was like a thorn in my throat.

"Does a guest do *that*?"

Rainey slowly stood up, looking like a kicked puppy.

"Sienna, please don't be mad... I accidentally got my clothes wet, so Grant let me borrow these."

"We're really not doing anything wrong. Just a movie and some talking. How could you... how could you think something so dirty?"

Her eyes filled with tears that she refused to let fall.

"I know I shouldn't have worn your clothes. I'll go change right now..."

"Stop acting!" I snapped. "Rainey, I see right through you."

"It's the middle of the night. You're alone with a married man, wearing his wife's clothes, and feeding him. You think I'm stupid?"

"Sienna!"

Grant stood up abruptly and moved into my space.

His tall frame was intimidating, his face full of pure disgust.

"That's enough! Look at yourself. You're acting like a hysterical bitch!"

"Rainey is my protégé. We are clean! Is your mind so twisted that you have to drag everyone down to your level?"

"My mind is twisted?"

I looked up at him, fighting back tears.

"Grant, ask your own conscience! You call that being 'clean'?"

"Letting her wear my clothes and cuddle with you is clean? Your standards for being a good husband are pathetic."

"Sienna, you've got it all wrong..." Rainey sobbed.

"Grant is just like an older brother to me. He saw I was having a hard time and invited me over to vent."

"If there was really something between us, you wouldn't be the one he married."

She looked at Grant with tear-stained eyes, looking fragile and beautiful.

"Grant, I'm so sorry. This is my fault. I shouldn't have come."

"I'm making you fight with your wife... I'll leave now. I won't bother you guys anymore..."

"You're not going anywhere!"

Grant grabbed her arm, pulling her behind him to protect her. He turned to me with eyes like ice.

"She's not the one who should leave, Sienna."

"I think you've had it too easy. You've become paranoid and toxic. Rainey is innocent. She trusts me like a brother, and she just needed a place to relax."

"You're the one with the dirty mind. You owe her an apology. Now."

He wanted me to apologize?

I looked at Rainey hiding behind him, giving me a smug look. A chill ran from my feet to the top of my head.

Anger, betrayal, and a deep, hollow sadness filled my chest until I couldn't breathe.

"An apology?"

My voice was shaking, but it was sharp.

"Grant, you and her are the ones who should be apologizing! You're in my house, in my clothes, being intimate."

"I catch you red-handed, and somehow I'm the crazy one? I'm the one with the dirty mind? You both are shameless!"

"You―!"

Grant's face turned purple with rage. He raised his hand as if he were going to do something.

But he just swung it through the air and let it drop.

The look of loathing in his eyes was like a dull knife sawing through my heart.

"You're impossible! Sienna, you've lost your damn mind! I can't even talk to you!"
