Chapter 2

The forest came alive with sound. Elise's ears caught every whisper of wind through the trees, every distant rustle of leaves, and every heartbeat thundering nearby. Her senses had sharpened unnaturally, and it wasn't just the heightened awareness that unsettled her-it was the hunger.

A deep, gnawing ache clawed at her insides, a hunger she couldn't name or understand. She clutched her stomach, but the pain only worsened. Kade walked ahead of her, silent and deliberate, his presence both a guide and a reminder that she was no longer in control of her fate.

"How much farther?" Elise asked, her voice harsher than she intended.

"Close enough for you to stop complaining," Kade replied without looking back.

The urge to snap at him boiled in her chest, but she bit it back. She needed answers more than she needed to indulge her temper. Whatever he was leading her to, it had to be better than wandering the forest alone, marked by the bite of a wolf she still couldn't fully comprehend.

The trees thinned, revealing a clearing illuminated by the pale light of the Blood Moon. At the center stood a stone altar, ancient and worn, surrounded by a circle of jagged rocks. Shapes moved in the shadows, too quick and fluid to make out clearly.

"Stay close," Kade said, his tone carrying a warning she didn't dare ignore.

Elise stepped into the clearing, her boots crunching against frost-covered grass. The shapes solidified into figures-men and women, their eyes glowing faintly in the moonlight. Their presence was both predatory and mesmerizing, and she couldn't shake the feeling that she was being weighed and measured.

"Who is she?" one of them growled, his voice rough and hostile. A tall man with dark hair and a scar running down the side of his face stepped forward, his gaze fixed on Elise with thinly veiled disdain.

"She's marked," Kade said, stepping between Elise and the man. "Fenric, stand down."

Fenric didn't move. His lips curled into a sneer, revealing sharp canines that gleamed unnaturally white. "You brought a stray to us on Blood Moon night? Have you lost your mind, Kade?"

"She's not a stray," Kade replied, his tone even but laced with authority. "She's the one."

The murmurs that followed were immediate and unnerving. Elise glanced around, trying to piece together what they meant. The one? The one for what?

"I didn't ask for this," she snapped, breaking the tension. The words tumbled out before she could stop them, but the weight of their stares made her defiance bubble to the surface. "I didn't ask to be bitten or dragged out here, so if you've got something to say, say it."

The clearing fell silent. Fenric's sneer deepened, but he didn't respond. Instead, he turned to Kade.

"She's reckless," Fenric said. "She'll get us all killed."

"Then it's a good thing you're not the one making decisions," Kade shot back.

The tension between them crackled like a live wire, but Fenric finally stepped aside, his growl low and simmering. Kade motioned for Elise to follow him toward the altar, where an older woman waited, her silver hair gleaming in the moonlight.

"This is Lyra," Kade said. "She's our seer."

Lyra's gaze pierced through Elise, as though she could see every thought and fear hidden beneath the surface. "You carry the mark of the wolf, child," she said, her voice soft yet commanding. "And the hunger has already begun."

Elise blinked. "Hunger?"

"You feel it, don't you?" Lyra asked. "The pull, the ache inside you. It will grow stronger with time, and it will consume you unless you learn to control it."

Elise's hand instinctively moved to her stomach. She hadn't told anyone about the strange hunger clawing at her, but Lyra's words struck too close to the truth to dismiss.

"What happens if I don't?" Elise asked, her voice quieter now.

"You lose yourself," Lyra said simply. "The wolf inside you takes over, and you become nothing more than a beast-a monster that lives only to hunt and kill."

Elise's stomach turned. The idea of losing her humanity, of becoming the very thing she fought against, made her blood run cold.

"Then how do I stop it?" she demanded.

"You don't stop it," Lyra said. "You embrace it, but on your terms. You learn to wield the wolf's power without letting it consume you. That is the only way."

The answer didn't satisfy Elise, but before she could press further, Lyra turned to Kade.

"She needs to begin the Rite," Lyra said.

Kade nodded, his expression unreadable. "We don't have time to ease her into it. The Crimson Fangs are already moving."

"The what?" Elise asked, looking between them.

"They're the ones who sent the wolf that attacked you," Kade explained. "They've been trying to weaken the Moon's Veil for years, and now they're close to succeeding. Your mark means you're part of this fight, whether you want to be or not."

Elise's pulse quickened. None of this made sense, yet the urgency in their voices told her it was real. The wolf, the mark, the Moon's Veil-whatever it all meant, it had pulled her into a world she didn't understand and couldn't escape.

Kade stepped closer, his green eyes locking onto hers. "You have a choice to make, Elise. You can fight this, deny it, and let the hunger destroy you. Or you can stand with us and fight for something bigger than yourself."

The weight of his words pressed down on her, but Elise refused to let it crush her. She squared her shoulders, meeting his gaze with a determination that surprised even herself.

"What do I have to do?"

Lyra smiled faintly, her expression tinged with approval. "The Rite will test your strength and your will. If you succeed, you'll gain control over the wolf inside you. If you fail..."

"You don't come back," Kade finished.

Elise swallowed hard, her hands curling into fists. The odds weren't comforting, but she had faced death before. This time, she would fight to ensure it wouldn't claim her.

"Let's get this over with," she said.

The pack moved quickly, forming a loose circle around the altar. Kade handed Elise a small dagger, its blade etched with runes she didn't recognize.

"This is your key," he said. "The Rite begins when you draw your own blood. After that, the wolf inside you will rise, and it's up to you to bring it to heel."

Elise's grip tightened on the dagger. The hunger inside her roared louder now, as if sensing what was about to happen. She took a deep breath, steadying herself.

The blade bit into her palm, sharp and cold. Blood welled up, dripping onto the altar. The runes began to glow, and a low hum filled the air.

Pain ripped through her body, unlike anything she'd ever felt. Her knees buckled, but she didn't fall. Her vision blurred, and the world around her seemed to shift, the forest and the pack fading into a swirl of shadows and light.

When the world settled again, she was no longer in the clearing. She stood in a vast, empty landscape bathed in red light, the air thick with the scent of iron and earth.

A growl echoed behind her, low and guttural. Elise turned, and her breath caught.

The wolf stood before her, larger and more fearsome than the one that had attacked her. Its eyes burned with a feral intensity, and its fur shimmered with an otherworldly glow.

It lunged, and Elise braced herself. This fight wasn't just for her survival-it was for her very soul.
