Chapter 3

The ground trembled beneath Elise's feet. The massive wolf stood before her, its golden eyes gleaming like twin suns in the dim, red-tinged landscape. A low growl vibrated in her chest, the sound not unlike the distant rumble of thunder. Every muscle in her body screamed for action. But fear rooted her to the spot.

It wasn't the wolf's size that terrified her, though that was enough to make her heart race-it was the presence of something far more primal beneath its fur. The creature was a manifestation of her own deepest instincts, the hunger, the power, the ferocity, all of it contained in this one monstrous form.

"Fight it," a voice urged from the distance, deep and resonant.

Elise's gaze darted to the shadows, but no one was visible. She could feel the weight of their eyes on her, though. The pack, watching her, waiting.

The wolf took a step forward, its claws sinking into the ground with a harsh scrape. Elise could feel its breath, hot and reeking of blood, brushing against her skin. She swallowed hard. Fear had never paralyzed her like this before.

"I won't lose control," she whispered under her breath, trying to steady her racing pulse. But the words rang hollow in the vast, empty world she stood in.

The wolf didn't wait. It lunged, faster than she could react.

She barely dodged its snapping jaws, the wolf's teeth grazing the air just inches from her face. Her heart hammered in her chest as she stumbled backward, desperately reaching for something to ground herself. The urge to fight surged within her-wild, untamed, a powerful force she could no longer ignore.

Her hands burned with the need to shift, to take the form that would allow her to fight back with equal strength. She could feel the power rising within her, but it was foreign, untethered, a beast she couldn't control. The wolf was her, and she was the wolf. A part of her cried out for release.

The ground shifted beneath her, the earth splitting open, and the wolf, sensing weakness, pounced once more. This time, Elise didn't dodge.

She met it head-on.

Her body moved faster than she expected, her hands reaching toward the beast's throat as if they were guided by some unseen force. The moment her fingers brushed its fur, the world around her exploded in a blinding flash of light. The wolf let out a yelping growl as her body shuddered, the sensation of something deep within her cracking, splitting apart, and then reforming.

It wasn't pain. It was power.

Her body rippled with heat, her bones stretching and shifting, and in an instant, her vision cleared. The wolf's face was no longer a terrifying, foreign presence-it was her own. Her breath came out in shallow gasps, her teeth elongated, and fur sprouted across her skin.

She was the wolf.

The hunger surged within her again, and this time, it felt like a call to action, like the wolf's instincts had taken over entirely. A roar built in her chest, and she let it rip free, the sound of it echoing across the barren landscape. The wolf before her faltered for a moment, its gaze narrowing as it saw her transformation.

She was no longer the prey. She was the predator.

The other wolf growled, its posture shifting from a crouch to a full-bodied attack. But Elise was ready. Her movements were fluid, instinctual, as if she had been born for this fight. She dove forward with a grace and power she had never known, her body moving like water, sliding beneath the wolf's snapping jaws.

Her claws raked across its side, and the wolf howled in pain, staggering backward. Blood stained the red earth beneath them. The world felt more real now, more alive, as her senses heightened, and everything slowed. Every shift in the wind, every rustle of leaves, every flicker of movement around her was crystal clear.

The wolf recovered quickly, however, and came at her again with renewed fury. It was faster, more agile than she had anticipated. The fight was no longer a battle of strength, but of endurance and control. She could feel her human side screaming at her to stop, to fight back using her mind, not her instincts. But the wolf inside her fought to dominate, clawing at her consciousness, threatening to pull her under.

A voice, familiar yet distant, echoed in her mind.

**"You have to control it. Use the power, don't let it use you."**

Kade's words from earlier rang in her ears. He had warned her of this. The wolf was not a gift-it was a curse, a power to be wielded with caution. If she let herself be consumed by it, there would be no turning back.

Her claws slashed through the air as the wolf lunged once more. This time, Elise did not fight back with wild abandon. She waited, her instincts guiding her, and just as the wolf's teeth closed around her, she twisted, using its momentum against it. Her claws raked down its side, and the wolf yelped, staggering away from her.

The wolf's movements slowed, its once-vibrant eyes now dimming. Elise's breath came out in shallow gasps, but she didn't stop. She had to finish this.

With a final, earth-shattering roar, she leapt at the wolf, her fangs sinking deep into its neck. The taste of blood flooded her senses, but she held firm, her jaws locking around its throat. The wolf struggled for a moment longer, but then it went limp, the life draining out of it.

The clearing fell silent.

Elise stood over the fallen creature, panting, her heart racing. Her body throbbed with the aftermath of the transformation, the hunger still gnawing at her insides. But she had won.

She staggered backward, falling to her knees as the wolf's body began to dissolve into mist. The world around her wavered and twisted, the red light fading into soft moonlight. The ground shifted, and suddenly she was standing back in the clearing, human once more, trembling from the power she had just wielded.

Kade was there, his expression unreadable. Lyra stood off to the side, her eyes bright with something that could have been approval-or perhaps concern.

"You did it," Kade said quietly.

"I don't feel like I did," Elise muttered, her voice shaking. She looked down at her hands, still trembling from the force of the transformation. "I nearly lost myself."

Kade stepped forward, crouching beside her. "It's always a fight. The wolf doesn't give up easily. But you controlled it, and that's more than most can say."

Lyra nodded. "You've passed the first test. The hardest one, in fact. Now, you must learn to do it at will, not just in the heat of battle. Only then will you truly have control."

Elise glanced up at the others, the members of the pack still watching her from the edge of the clearing. Fenric, the one who had opposed her earlier, now stood silently, his eyes not filled with hostility, but something akin to respect.

"You've earned your place here," Kade said.

The words settled in her chest like lead. A place? Elise hadn't come here to join their pack. She hadn't come here to stay. She had come for answers, for a way out. But now... now she was tethered to something far bigger than she had ever imagined.

"And what happens now?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Kade's eyes softened, but there was no mistaking the weight of his words. "Now, you fight with us. The Crimson Fangs will not stop. And neither will we."

Elise closed her eyes for a moment, steadying herself. The hunger was still there, lurking beneath the surface, but for the first time, she felt something else: a strange sense of purpose. She had fought the wolf. She had won. And no matter what came next, she would fight to control it.

No matter what it took.

That's everything available right now.
