Chapter 2
2、
In my past life, I practically lived in the hospital to ensure that surgery would be flawless.
I spent weeks studying medical journals and rewatching successful surgical recordings over and over again.
Yet the moment I gave Mason a second chance at life, my beloved wife pointed a finger at me, accusing me of murder out of personal jealousy.
The bright future I worked so hard for shattered into pieces in an instant.
To cement my guilt, she bribed a scrub nurse on the surgical team.
Under blinding camera flashes, the nurse pointed at me and cried out with righteous fury.
"I saw Dr. Nolan swap the life-saving medication with my own eyes!"
She even leaked an edited video of an argument between me and Mason.
In that video, my frustrated shout of "Why aren't you dead yet?" became the final nail in my coffin.
No matter how hard I tried to explain, no one listened over the fabricated testimony and physical evidence.
Everyone believed I was a cold-blooded monster hiding beneath a white coat.
Only my mother stood firmly by my side.
Yet the more she tried to defend me, the more viciously the internet attacked her.
The relentless online harassment pushed her into a mental breakdown, causing her to fall into the river and drown.
On the day of my official arrest, I jumped off the hospital roof to end the nightmare.
After my death, my lingering spirit hovered around Gia, only to watch Mason walk back into her life, completely unharmed.
Perhaps heaven heard my burning rage and granted me a second chance.
In this lifetime, the surgeon holding the scalpel for Mason was Gia's own father.
I wanted to see how she planned to pin this blood on my hands now.
The next morning, I arrived at the hospital early.
I shameless spent the entire day glued to Chief Morrison's side in his office.
When the surgery was near its end, I finally stood up and excused myself.
The moment I stepped out toward the operating room lobby, Gia and a massive crowd surrounded me.
Because I kept my right hand tucked deep inside the pocket of my oversized lab coat, Gia never noticed the thick bandages.
She marched up to me and delivered a stinging slap across my face.
"Garrett Nolan! How dare you call yourself a doctor when you let your petty jealousy kill an innocent patient! You are a monster!"
I pressed my tongue against my aching cheek.
Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted someone in her entourage secretly recording with a camera.
I let out a cold laugh in my heart.
"What nonsense are you spewing? When did I ever harm a patient? Mason's surgery―"
Gia's eyes were bloodshot as she cut me off hysterically.
"Do you really think claiming the surgery failed will save you from going to prison?"
"You deliberately murdered Mason!"
Her words whipped Mason's family into an instant frenzy.
Before I could get another word out, several relatives lunged forward, throwing punches and kicks.
"You piece of trash! You don't deserve to wear that coat!"
"An eye for an eye! You are going to pay for this with your life!"
Luckily, hospital security rushed in just in time.
I only took a glancing punch to the jaw, while my white coat ended up covered in dirty footprints.
Standing behind the security guards, I locked eyes with Gia and raised my voice.
"I did not kill Mason! Gia, you better show proof before you make such reckless claims!"
Gia did not flinch; instead, she wore a look of tragic grief.
"Garrett, I am your wife, but I am a human being first. I cannot turn a blind eye to your cruelty."
"Do not blame me for this. Between marital loyalty and justice, I choose to do what is right and give the deceased the justice he deserves!"
Right then, Chief Morrison arrived in a hurry after hearing the commotion.
