Chapter 3
3
Looking at this unfamiliar version of Logan, memories from three years ago rushed back.
When we first met, he was shy and awkward.
Blushing, he walked up to me, nervously pinching the hem of his shirt.
"Excuse me, can I get your number?"
Amid my friends' teasing, my face turned red too.
Through his dedicated pursuit, I gradually fell for this gentle boy.
Logan came from an ordinary background, so my parents initially disapproved of our relationship.
When Logan found out, he was not angry at all.
Instead, he comforted me: "Your parents just want the best for you. They are right, since I cannot give you a lavish life yet."
To win my parents' approval, he treated me like royalty.
Rain or shine, he always brought me breakfast and worked multiple part-time jobs just to buy me nice bags and jewelry.
One evening, Logan and I walked past a dim alleyway.
A few drunken thugs blocked our path, their eyes lighting up when they saw me.
Logan shielded me behind him, trying to lead me away, but they cornered us.
One thug sneered: "They say every man for himself when trouble hits. I just want to chat with the pretty lady."
Logan never let go of my hand.
He covered me with his own body, enduring their heavy punches and kicks.
I cried, begging him to run away.
Logan looked at me with fierce determination: "I will never let go of your hand…"
By the time the police arrived, Logan had lost consciousness, yet he still held me in a tight embrace.
After that incident, my parents finally accepted him.
He had always treated me well, yet his eyes were always clear and detached whenever he looked at me.
Even during our most passionate moments, his gaze remained unnervingly calm.
He would push me away gently and say: "Piper, let's wait until we are married. No rush."
Back then, I thought he was just remarkably honorable and restrained.
But hearing him talk about Chloe with his friends now shattered that illusion.
Logan's dismissive voice echoed clearly: "I have never touched Piper. Chloe is the only woman for me."
"Piper looks like Chloe. To make her look more like her, I had her grow her hair long and wear the clothes Chloe likes. But no matter how much she resembles Chloe, I have to stay pure for my true love."
The Chloe he loved had long, silky black hair and wore light-colored dresses.
No wonder the clothes he gifted me were always pale, flowy dresses.
No wonder his gaze was always filled with quiet regret whenever he stroked my hair.
Now I finally understood.
All of his love was merely directed at the resemblance between my features and Chloe's.
That's everything available right now.
