Chapter 1

On our wedding anniversary, my wife's male assistant posted a photo of a luxury car on his Instagram.

The caption read: "The car Boss Evelyn gave me is a dream to drive. This is the best birthday gift I've ever received."

I recognized the car instantly.

It was the same one my wife had given me for my birthday last year.

I didn't hesitate and left a comment right under his post: "Is that car actually yours, or are you just posing?"

A second later, my phone rang. It was the assistant.

"I'm so sorry, Caleb. This is all my fault. I'll delete the post right now. Please, don't be mad at Evelyn."

Before I could even get a word in, I heard my wife's sharp voice in the background.

"Jaxson just closed a massive deal that's going to bring in at least a hundred grand a month. What's the big deal if he drives your car for a bit?"

"All you've done this past year is rot at home playing video games. How dare you start drama? Delete that comment right now."

In that moment, everything became clear to me.

It was time for the company to return to its rightful owner.

Evelyn came home early today. For a moment, I actually thought she'd made time to celebrate our anniversary with me.

But her behavior was bizarre. As soon as she stepped through the door, she started rummaging through the drawers.

I stood behind her, still holding a spatula, and asked, "What are you looking for?"

"Nothing much. Where are the keys to that car I gave you last year? I need to use it."

I pulled the keys out of the nightstand and handed them to her.

"Is there something wrong with your car? Do you want me to call the mechanic for you?"

Her expression remained cold and distant.

"No need. I already dropped mine off at the dealership."

She grabbed the keys and turned to leave immediately. I instinctively reached out and caught her arm.

"Aren't you staying for dinner? Do you even remember what today is?"

Evelyn brushed my hand off with a look of annoyance. "Stop being a nuisance. I have a client to meet, and I'll probably be at the office all night. Don't wait up."

She walked out without another word, not even glancing back at me.

Since she wasn't coming home, there was no point in cooking.

I turned off the stove and went out to the balcony to light a cigarette.

While scrolling through my phone out of boredom, a specific post caught my eye.

"The car Boss Evelyn gave me is a dream to drive. This is the best birthday gift I've ever received."

The post was from Jaxson Reed, my wife's assistant. The photo featured my car.

The car Evelyn supposedly gave me for my birthday last year was actually bought with my own credit card.

Recalling her frantic search for the keys earlier, I realized the truth.

There was no client meeting.

Evelyn just needed an excuse to spend the night with Jaxson.

Furious, I left a comment on his post: "Is that car actually yours, or are you just posing?"
