Chapter 3
3
I let her do whatever she wanted with the company.
Slowly, I stepped back and stopped interfering.
However, I was still the legal owner on paper, and the secretary wouldn't sign off on major moves without my approval.
Maybe that's why Evelyn pulled her ultimate card.
She told me she wanted a baby but didn't want to give up her career.
She convinced me that for the sake of our child, I needed to stay home and be a house husband.
I hesitated at first.
It wasn't that I wanted power; I just wanted to spend more time by her side.
Even if we were just in the same room working silently, I wanted to be near her.
But then she told me she was pregnant.
The news hit me like a wave of pure joy.
In that moment, I lost my ability to think rationally. I was so happy I agreed to whatever she asked.
Just like that, she took full control of the company, and I became the "kept man" everyone gossiped about.
I didn't care what they said.
As long as Evelyn was happy and the baby was healthy, I had no complaints.
The moment I left the office, Evelyn hired Jaxson Reed.
From then on, they were inseparable.
I looked into Jaxson's past. Since his college days, he had been a professional gold-digger, living off women.
He had a reputation for cheating on the very women who paid his bills.
I tried to warn Evelyn once, but she immediately jumped to his defense.
"Stop looking at people through such a judgmental lens. Jaxson might be young, but he's incredibly capable."
"He's brought in more investment than you ever did. Honestly, he's a much better man than someone who hides at home all day."
I stood there, speechless.
She was the one who insisted I stay home to raise our child, yet now she used it as a weapon against me.
I began to wonder.
What would her face look like if she knew those investors she bowed down to were all working for me?
Our daughter was just a baby then, and I didn't want her growing up in a broken home, so I kept swallowing my pride.
But after our daughter was born, Evelyn was never there for her.
I was the one waking up at 3 AM to make bottles and change diapers. I was the one taking her to the park.
Evelyn always claimed she was too busy, calling us her "dead weight."
Our daughter would often ask me where her mommy was, sometimes crying for her in her sleep.
I never knew how to answer her.
I didn't want to lie to my child.
But I certainly couldn't tell her that her mother was out with another man, neglecting us both.
Now that Maisie was almost ready for preschool, she was starting to understand things.
My parents did most of the heavy lifting with her lately, and she rarely saw Evelyn anyway.
I realized I had nothing left to lose.
That's everything available right now.
