Chapter 2
2
Perhaps sensing that the atmosphere was wrong, Weston walked up and took my arm, trying to coax me.
"Aria, I'm sorry about my tone just now. I was stressed about work and I made you wait too long. But look, I came back specifically to make it up to you. Don't be mad at me, okay?"
Was his idea of making it up to me bringing his marriage certificate with another woman into our home?
I shoved his hand away, my voice cold and hard.
"I don't need your pity."
Our love was like a piece of fruit with a sweet skin but a rotten, bitter core that only I had to taste.
Weston's face instantly darkened. "Aria, have you had enough? I've apologized and I've explained. What else do you want? Just because you took care of me for a few years, does that mean I have to sell my entire life to you?"
A long, suffocating silence filled the large living room.
I just stared at that familiar yet strange face. It hurt in a way I couldn't describe.
He was no longer the big brother who would have given his life to protect me fifteen years ago.
I had wasted so many years on him and lost my dreams in the process.
I figured the debt for saving my life was finally paid in full.
Before I could speak, Weston's phone rang.
Even though he quickly turned away, I still saw the caller ID on the screen.
"Baby."
That was a nickname that used to belong only to me.
And now, I was standing right in front of him. It was obvious who was on the other end of that line.
Vivian's voice came through the speaker. "Weston, I accidentally broke the perfume bottle you gave me. My wrist is bleeding."
"Are you okay? I'm coming over right now. Just wait for me."
After hanging up, Weston rushed toward the door in a panic.
This time, I didn't stop him. I just said quietly, "Then don't bother coming back."
"What?"
Weston turned back, looking confused and annoyed.
I met his gaze steadily.
"I said, if you insist on going to see Vivian today, then we are through. Let's break up."
"Aria! When are you going to stop this nonsense? You can't just throw the word 'breakup' around whenever you're moody! I have an emergency. We'll talk when I get back."
Weston's figure disappeared into the elevator. I calmly closed the door and sat on the sofa.
Let it be.
I placed my hand over my flat stomach. I only felt sorry for the unborn child.
Better to let it go now than to be born into a world where it was destined to lack a father's love.
I wondered.
Weston loved children so much. How would he react if he knew he once had a child?
