Chapter 3

I packed a small bag and moved back to the old, cramped apartment my parents had left me.

Leaning against the wall under their funeral photos, I finally broke down and sobbed.

I regretted it so much. I regretted not listening to their warnings, thinking that my long-term devotion could win Weston's heart.

I even regretted missing my parents' final moments because I was too busy taking care of Weston.

Fortunately, starting now, I was going to make up for all those regrets.

After letting it all out, I cleaned up the place and went out to buy some daily necessities.

Lying on the bed I grew up in, my wandering heart suddenly felt anchored.

I had the best sleep I'd had in years.

I didn't have to worry about Weston's mood or whether he was eating well.

In my dream, I saw my parents. Before I could talk to them, the dream turned sour.

Weston was in the dream, screaming at me for being mean to Vivian. He grabbed my sleeve and tried to force me to apologize to her.

Anger flared in my chest. Just as I was about to fight back, a loud ringing woke me up.

I answered the phone groggily, only to hear Weston's explosive voice:

"Aria, where the hell are you! Did you forget today is the company's contract gala? Everyone else came with a partner, and my date is missing. You're doing this on purpose to embarrass me, aren't you!"

My brain cleared instantly. I pulled the phone away from my ear, irritated.

"If that's what you want to think, fine."

"Aria!"

Weston's voice got louder. I heard footsteps on the other end.

He must have moved to a more private spot.

He sighed, softening his tone slightly. "Aria, today is a huge deal for the company. Stop acting out, okay? Just get over here. The signing ceremony is about to start. We can talk for real after the gala, alright?"

He sounded like he was trying to negotiate. For a second, I almost gave in.

But before I could speak, I heard some muffled laughter and teasing from his side. "Oh, look! Secretary Vance is wearing a matching outfit with Mr. Thorne~"

"You're right. They look like a power couple standing together. Such a perfect match."

Vivian's voice sounded shy. "Oh, stop it... I just put this on randomly."

When I didn't answer for a long time, Weston called my name again.

All he got was a cold laugh. "Weston, your date is already there. Don't contact me again."
