Chapter 2

At the same moment Karin Dean was performing worry in the Dean drawing room, Deidre stepped out of Suite 801, the heavy mahogany door clicking shut behind her, cutting off the muffled groans of the terrified buyer.

She checked the ten million dollar balance on her burner phone, her expression remaining entirely bored as she slipped the device into her trench coat pocket.

The pulsating bass of the underground club vibrated through the floorboards, but her highly trained ears caught a discordant sound nearby.

The sharp shattering of crystal glass cut through the rhythmic music from the end of the private corridor.

Deidre paused mid-step, her combat boots silent against the velvet carpet, and turned her gaze toward the slightly ajar door of Lounge 4.

She approached the crack in the door, the dim, neon-purple lighting inside casting long, distorted shadows across the expensive leather sofas.

Through the narrow gap, she saw a group of five young, intoxicated Wall Street elites surrounding a lone figure trapped in the corner.

The man in the center sat motionless in a sleek, customized titanium wheelchair, his head slightly bowed, obscuring his upper face in the ambient shadows.

Clinton Hopkins was known across Manhattan as the broken outcast of the Hopkins dynasty, stripped of his inheritance after a catastrophic yacht disaster left him supposedly deaf, mute, and paralyzed.

Yet beneath his tailored dark navy suit, Clinton's senses were razor-sharp, his ears tracking every ambient frequency in the room.

One of the elites, holding a half-empty bottle of aged Macallan, sneered loudly while waving the alcohol near Clinton's face.

"Look at the great Clinton Hopkins now. Can't even hear the music, can you?"

Clinton remained perfectly still, his long, dark eyelashes casting shadows over his cold, deep gray eyes as he played the role of the helpless cripple flawlessly.

Beneath the wheelchair armrest, his pale, elegant fingers absentmindedly traced the custom lighter in his pocket, calculating exactly which offshore accounts to seize to bankrupt their entire lineage by sunrise.

Another elite stepped forward, making exaggerated, insulting hand gestures right in Clinton's face, laughing hysterically at his own cruel joke.

Clinton's gaze remained empty and unfocused, though his heightened senses registered the elevated heart rate and alcohol-laced breath of his tormentor.

Outside the door, Deidre watched the scene unfold, a faint frown creasing her forehead as she observed the blatant, cowardly bullying.

She noticed the subtle, defensive posture of the disabled man, his broad shoulders held tight beneath his tailored suit.

The lead bully suddenly tilted the heavy whiskey bottle, intentionally pouring the amber liquid directly over Clinton's polished leather shoes and trousers.

Clinton did not flinch, his jaw tightening imperceptibly as the cold liquid seeped into the expensive fabric.

He slowly lifted his head, the neon light finally illuminating his strikingly handsome, sharp facial structure.

Deidre's breath hitched slightly in her throat.

His face was a masterpiece of tragic, aristocratic beauty, with high cheekbones, a sharp nose, and striking gray eyes that seemed lost in sorrow.

Deidre had always possessed a fatal weakness for overwhelming visual aesthetics, and this man's helpless vulnerability struck an immediate chord within her.

The bully leaned down, his reddened face inches from Clinton's cheek.

"You're nothing but a discarded piece of trash, Hopkins. A mute cripple nobody wants."

Clinton's eyes darted toward the crack in the door, his peripheral vision catching the briefest glint of amber eyes watching him from the darkness.

Recognizing an unexpected presence, Clinton instantly softened his sharp gaze, deliberately projecting an aura of desperate vulnerability and fragile helplessness.

He weakly raised a trembling hand as if to shield his face, a calculated micro-expression of fear crossing his flawless features, perfectly baiting the trap.

The bully misinterpreted the defensive gesture as total surrender and raised his heavy hand to deliver a humiliating slap, the gold Rolex on his wrist glinting under the lights.

Deidre's right hand instinctively dropped to the hilt of the tactical knife hidden beneath her trench coat, her protective instincts overriding her standard protocol to remain unseen.

Before the bully's hand could connect with his skin, Clinton let out a ragged, silent breath, closing his eyes as if bracing for the inevitable strike.

The sheer pathetic beauty of his quiet resignation shattered Deidre's usual cold, detached rationality.

She shifted her weight, her combat boot pressing firmly against the heavy mahogany door, preparing to breach the private lounge.

Inside, Clinton counted the milliseconds in his head, his muscles coiled like a striking viper beneath his tailored jacket, waiting to see if his beautiful audience would intervene.

The bully's hand descended rapidly, the air whistling past his palm as he aimed directly for Clinton's pale cheek.

Deidre's eyes narrowed into dangerous slits, her decision finalized in a heartbeat.
