Chapter 3
Deidre kicked the heavy mahogany door with devastating force, the reinforced brass hinges screaming as the wood splintered and slammed violently against the interior wall.
The deafening crash echoed through the private lounge, instantly freezing the bully's hand mid-air, barely an inch away from Clinton's face.
Clinton's gray eyes snapped open, masking his predatory satisfaction behind wide, convincing shock as he looked at the woman stepping through the shattered threshold.
Deidre walked into the neon-lit room, her black trench coat swirling around her boots, her amber eyes locked dead onto the lead bully.
The lead bully recovered from his initial fright, puffing out his chest and dropping his hand from Clinton.
"Who the hell are you? This is a private room, bitch."
Deidre did not answer him immediately; she merely pulled a small packet of mixed nuts from her pocket, popping a cashew into her mouth with infuriating nonchalance.
Another Wall Street elite stepped forward, cracking his knuckles with a cruel grin.
"Security is going to drag you out of here by your hair. Get lost before you get hurt."
Deidre swallowed the nut, her voice dropping into a dangerously soft register.
"Step away from the wheelchair. Now."
The five men burst into raucous laughter, completely underestimating the slim, solitary woman standing before them.
The lead bully sneered, pointing a thick finger directly at her chest.
"Or what? You're going to protect the deaf-mute cripple all by yourself?"
The other elites circled around her, their eyes filled with malicious amusement, fully expecting to overpower her and throw her out into the alley.
Clinton watched intently from his chair, his fingers gripping the armrests tightly, ready to snap their necks with his concealed blade if any of their hands actually touched her skin.
The lead bully lunged forward, his heavy hand reaching out aggressively to grab the lapel of Deidre's dark coat.
Deidre moved with terrifying, fluid efficiency.
She side-stepped the clumsy grab, her right hand snapping out like an iron clamp to seize his extended wrist.
With a sharp, brutal twist of her forearm, she dislocated his shoulder joint, the sickening pop echoing loudly over the club's muffled bass.
The bully screamed in pure agony, dropping heavily to his knees as he clutched his dislodged arm, his face turning a ghastly shade of pale.
The remaining four elites froze in place, their cruel laughter dying instantly in their throats as they stared at their screaming leader.
One of them panicked and tried to bolt for the open door, but Deidre swept her leg out in a low arc, tripping him and sending him crashing face-first into the glass coffee table.
Tempered glass shattered across the floor in a loud explosion of shards.
Deidre stepped over the groaning men, her breathing perfectly even, not a single strand of her chestnut hair out of place.
She approached the wheelchair, the lethal aura surrounding her vanishing instantly, replaced by a surprisingly gentle expression as she looked down at the quiet man.
Clinton looked up at her, his deep gray eyes wide and entirely vulnerable, playing the traumatized victim to absolute perfection.
Deidre crouched slightly so her gaze was level with his, her voice softening.
"Are you hurt?"
Clinton slowly shook his head, his gaze locked on her features, silently projecting a profound sense of fabricated gratitude and awe.
He raised his pale hands, hesitantly signing "Thank you" in basic American Sign Language, his long fingers trembling just enough to sell the act.
Deidre's heart softened further at the fragile gesture; she reached out, her warm fingers gently grasping the rubber grips of his wheelchair handles.
"Let's get you out of here."
Clinton nodded meekly, allowing himself to be pushed forward, his back relaxing against the chair as he secretly inhaled the faint scent of vanilla and clean rain radiating from her coat.
As Deidre wheeled him toward the shattered doorway, the remaining conscious elites scrambled backward across the sticky floor, terrified of making eye contact with her.
Deidre paused at the threshold, casting a cold backward glance over her shoulder.
"If I ever see you near him again, I'll break more than your arms."
She pushed Clinton out into the hallway, the chaotic aftermath of the lounge fading behind them as they navigated toward the discreet VIP exit.
Clinton rested his chin lightly on his hand, a dark, possessive smirk briefly flashing across his lips before returning to a mask of innocent helplessness.
