Chapter 1

I worked myself to the bone to land a ten-million-dollar deal for my wife's law firm.

I just went downstairs to grab a coffee, but she used that as an excuse to fire me.

"New company policy. Being away from your desk for ten minutes counts as desertion. You were gone for ten minutes and five seconds. Pack your trash and get out."

I just smiled coldly. I didn't tell her I had already sent evidence of her embezzling funds to buy her male intern a Maybach to the police.

She wanted to burn the bridge after crossing it?

Well, I'm the bridge, and I'm about to collapse right on top of her.

I was packing my personal belongings when my office door was kicked open.

"Silas Montgomery, did you write that tip-off letter?" Elara Sterling screamed.

"How could you be so petty? Just because I fired you, you're trying to destroy my life!"

She was shaking with rage, her face twisted into a mask of pure hatred.

"Do you have any idea how much of my savings I had to burn to settle that investigation?"

Without waiting for an answer, she grabbed the framed photo on my desk and hurled it at the floor.

It was the only photo we had together. The glass shattered instantly.

I stared at the jagged shards on the floor, my voice completely flat.

"That client only signed with this firm because of me. I have a duty to protect their interests."

Elara let out a sharp, mocking laugh.

"Stop flattering yourself. They signed because of Jace's connections."

"I used the money Jace brought in to reward him with a luxury car. That's just good business."

Because of Jace Thorne?

I had spent six months groveling like a dog to land that account.

I was the one who was ignored, insulted, and worked until dawn to make it happen.

How did my hard work suddenly become the achievement of an intern who'd been here for a month?

Before I could defend myself, Jace walked in with a smug look on his face.

"Mr. Montgomery? I'm surprised you're still here," he said, faking a look of shock.

I wasn't in the mood for his games.

"Don't you know how to knock? Is this the professional standard you set as a lawyer?"

His eyes immediately turned red as if he were about to cry.

"But Elara said this was my private office now. Why would I knock on my own door?"

I let out a dry, cold laugh.

"Your private office? You two certainly didn't waste any time."

"What's the matter? Is the new Maybach not enough for your hookups? You need to play around in the office too?"

The words had barely left my mouth when Elara's hand whipped across my face.

The slap echoed through the room. My cheek burned with a clear, red mark.

"Watch your mouth, Silas. Not everyone has a mind as filthy as yours."

"Jace and I are strictly professional. I value him because he actually brings value to this firm."

"You, on the other hand, only think about revenge. I must have been blind to marry a loser like you!"

I pressed my tongue against my inner cheek, feeling the bitterness spread through my chest.

In five years of marriage, this wasn't the first time she'd said such things.

She was the "Queen of the Courtroom," and she always felt she had settled for a man like me.

I had tried everything to earn her respect, both at home and at work.

But that termination letter she signed this morning finally woke me up.

Some hearts are simply made of stone.

Jace put on his best victim act, looking down at his feet.

"Elara, maybe I should just go back to the common area. I don't want any trouble."

"If Silas can write tip-off letters to the cops, he can spread rumors about us too. I couldn't bear the shame."

Elara looked at him with pure pity before turning her fury back toward me.

"Silas, apologize to Jace right now! If you don't, we're getting a divorce!"

I finally looked her straight in the eye.

To build this firm's reputation, I had lived in this office for five years.

I had turned down dozens of offers from top-tier firms in New York just to stay by her side.

And now, she wanted to end it all for a manipulative intern with no real talent.

My heart finally went cold.

"Fine. Let's get a divorce."
