Chapter 1

The neon glow of "Aegis Prime" surrounded me, a familiar hum in my ears.

This was my world, vibrant, chaotic, and a hell of a lot easier to navigate than San Francisco outside my apartment window.

Millions logged in every day, looking for escape, for glory, for connection.

I just wanted to play the game.

But even here, the noise found me.

"Look, it's Kaiser's faceless ghost again."

The words, sharp and digital, flashed in the public team chat.

Another jab, another reminder of the gossip that clung to me and Liam like static.

He was "Kaiser," star captain of Vanguard Titans, handsome, charismatic, the face of eSports.

I was "NyxEcho," his supposed girlfriend, the one no one had ever seen.

My avatar, the one I used for every match, was plain.

Default female model, all sliders set to neutral.

Brown hair, brown eyes, no distinguishing marks.

It was a deliberate choice, a shield.

The game's customization was incredible, you could be anyone, look like anything.

I chose to look like no one.

The forums loved to dissect it.

"Why does Kaiser stick with someone who won't even show her face?"

"She must be hideous IRL."

"Probably a dude."

They didn't know the panic that clawed at my throat at the thought of being seen, truly seen.

A stalker in college, online threats turning into a terrifying real-world scare – that was why.

My privacy was a fortress.

Liam, "Kaiser" in game, was everything his avatar projected.

Golden hair, chiseled jaw, a hero's build.

A slightly more perfect version of his already good looks.

He was the spotlight, and I was the shadow, his strategist, his shot-caller.

The public couldn't reconcile it.

He was a god, I was a ghost.

I loved him, or at least, I loved the Liam I knew in the quiet moments, the one who valued NyxEcho's mind.

I endured the mockery for him, for the team.

My social anxiety made anonymity a comfort, a necessity.

So I stayed plain, stayed hidden, and let my strategies do the talking.

Tonight, though, Liam was distracted, even in our private comms.

"We need to lock down that flank, Kaiser," I said, my voice calm, even as our defenses buckled.

"Yeah, yeah, Nyx, got it," he replied, but his focus was elsewhere.

He was probably thinking about that damn screenshot again.

An old image, beta version of some game, a beautiful, ethereal avatar.

His "digital muse," he called it. He was obsessed.

It made my chest ache, a dull throb of inadequacy.

I refocused, calling out targets, directing our remaining teammates.

If Liam wasn't going to lead, I would.

We salvaged the match, a messy win, but a win.

After, instead of a quick "good game" and logging off, Liam stayed online, his avatar pacing in our private team lobby.

Then, he sent me a private message, not a voice call.

"Nyx. I need to show you something. Someone."

My heart lurched.

A new player icon appeared next to his. "Seraphina."

And then, he shared his screen.

It was her avatar, Seraphina. Ethereal. Beautiful.

And chillingly, achingly familiar to the girl in his cherished screenshot.

Next to her, Liam' s avatar beamed.

The message popped up below: "NyxEcho, meet Seraphina. She's... she's the one."
