Chapter 2

The one.

His words echoed in the sudden silence of my apartment.

My breath caught. The game world, usually a comfort, felt cold, sharp.

This wasn't just a new teammate. This was a declaration.

My hands trembled on the keyboard.

"She's perfect, Nyx. Just like the dream."

His messages kept coming, oblivious to the chasm opening under my feet.

I remembered him talking about that screenshot for years.

"Imagine finding her, Nyx. The girl behind that avatar."

He' d said it with such longing.

I never imagined he actually would, or that she'd look like a phantom from his past.

I tried to type, to ask, but my fingers fumbled.

"Liam?" I finally managed, a whisper in the chat.

No response. He was probably voice-chatting with her.

A system notification popped up: "Kaiser has invited Seraphina to join Vanguard Titans officer chat."

My rank. My access.

He didn't even tell me.

My work phone buzzed on the desk. A real-world intrusion.

A reminder from the indie studio I did concept art for.

"Project Chimera: Asset review meeting tomorrow, 10 AM. Liam Cole attending for peripheral integration."

Liam. My ex-boyfriend, the one who didn't know my face, was going to be in a meeting with me, Ava Chen, the freelance artist.

The irony was a bitter pill.

The next morning, I was a wreck.

I put on the most unremarkable clothes I owned, pulled my hair back, and wore my large, thick-rimmed glasses.

The ones that hid half my face. My usual disguise for the rare times I had to go out.

At the studio, Liam was already there, charming the lead designer.

He glanced at me when I was introduced. "Ava Chen, our concept artist."

No recognition. Just a polite, professional nod.

Why would there be? NyxEcho was a voice, a strategic mind, a plain avatar. Ava Chen was just another freelancer.

I sat through the meeting, my heart pounding.

He talked about his startup, his vision for gaming peripherals.

The same startup I' d designed logos for, created branding guides for, all through emails and voice-only calls as NyxEcho, his supportive girlfriend.

He had no idea.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to rip off my glasses and show him.

But the old fear, the social anxiety, it was a physical weight.

I stayed silent, invisible.

He was just as dismissive in person as he'd been online.

When I offered a suggestion about ergonomic design, he barely looked at me.

"We have our own design team focusing on that, thanks," he said, his tone cool, professional.

It was the same tone he used when NyxEcho questioned a bad call in-game.

The hurt was a fresh stab.

Later that day, back in the "safety" of my apartment, I doomscrolled the Aegis Prime forums.

A new thread was trending: "Kaiser's TRUE Muse? Meet Seraphina!"

It was filled with screenshots of her, side-by-side with Liam's "digital muse" image.

The resemblance was undeniable.

Then, a comment caught my eye. "Seraphina's username... 'Astraea_88'. Wasn't that NyxEcho's old beta tag from 'Aegis Legacy'?"

My blood ran cold.

Astraea_88. An obscure name I'd used for a few weeks, years ago, during a beta for a game that predated Aegis Prime.

The game where Liam had first seen that "ethereal avatar."

The avatar I had experimented with briefly, before the stalking, before I erased myself.

Chloe Bellweather, Seraphina, hadn't just mimicked the look. She' d stolen a piece of my past.

The forum sentiment was clear.

"Finally, Kaiser has a girl worthy of him!"

"NyxEcho who? Good riddance to the ghost."

"Seraphina and Kaiser are the OTP!"

My stomach churned.

I remembered Liam' s words, whispered late one night after a tournament win.

"Nyx, you're my rock. We're going all the way. Vanguard Titans, you and me."

That promise felt like ash in my mouth now.

Then, the official Vanguard Titans team page updated.

A splashy banner: "Introducing SERAPHINA - Vanguard Titans' New Star Player!"

Underneath, in smaller font: "NyxEcho will be transitioning to a reserve role."

Reserve role. Benched. Publicly.

Liam' s face, smiling next to Seraphina' s, was the final twist of the knife.

That's everything available right now.
