Chapter 2
2.
The party was the next day.
Lucas led me into the room, and the group was already rowdy.
"Oh look, the happy couple is finally here!"
Someone joked when they saw our matching necklaces.
"What is this! This is too much! You're killing us single people with all this PDA!"
Another classmate laughed and pounded the table. "Sienna is seriously impressive. She actually tamed a cool guy like Lucas! So many girls in school failed to catch him."
"It's not just that Lucas is hot. Sienna is amazing too―top of the class, a total goddess. They're a match made in heaven!" My best friend chimed in with a smile.
The atmosphere grew more heated, and someone started chanting. "Come on! Give us a kiss! You can't leave us without some sugar today!"
Being pushed by everyone, Lucas had a lazy smile on his face as he wrapped an arm around my shoulder. "Kiss for you guys? In your dreams!"
"Oh, don't be shy!"
"Just one! It's not a real celebration without a kiss!"
The cheering continued.
I kept my head down, forcing a faint smile.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Macy Quinn's face turn incredibly pale.
She bit her lip, staring at us intensely, before finally making an excuse. "I'm going to the restroom."
And Lucas, who had seemingly ignored her the whole time, immediately stood up as well.
I left the private room and followed the hallway to a small side balcony. Sure enough, Macy was standing there, and Lucas had already caught up to her.
"You just had to show off in front of me, didn't you?"
Macy's voice was cold, but it hidden an underlying sense of hurt. "You're even wearing matching necklaces. Don't you find it disgusting?"
Lucas quickly reached out to grab her hand, lowering his voice to comfort her. "Didn't I tell you? It's just to keep her from getting suspicious. I have to keep her sweet."
"The happier she is today, the more humiliated she'll be tomorrow."
He stopped for a moment and added, "Besides, a cheap necklace means nothing."
As he spoke, he pulled another velvet box from his pocket. "The thing that actually matters is this."
Standing in the shadows, I recognized the logo on the box.
It was a limited-edition 'Promise Ring' from a world-renowned brand.
It required real-name registration, and a person could only purchase one in their entire lifetime to give to one specific person.
Lucas was wrong.
I hadn't forgotten to prepare a gift for our one-month anniversary.
I had saved up for a long time and custom-ordered that exact same ring. I had intended to give it to him last night.
In the end, I just never took it out.
And now, he had bought the exact same style for Macy Quinn.
It was hilarious.
Just like our relationship.
I love you, but you love her.
