Chapter 2
2.
Every bit of this humiliation had been handed to me by Nadia.
I pressed my tongue against my throbbing cheek, about to demand a divorce.
Suddenly, Nadia’s phone rang with a custom ringtone reserved exclusively for Hayden.
“Hayden, what happened?”
Hayden’s trembling voice came through the speaker.
“Nadia, I fell down the stairs. I cannot move my leg.”
Nadia’s face turned pale instantly. Without casting a single glance at me, she grabbed her coat and rushed out the door.
I stood frozen in place. Five minutes later, my phone buzzed with a text from her.
“If you do not like the cap, throw it away. I will buy you something else. My parents adore you, so please stop throwing tantrums over Hayden.”
I did not reply, and a moment later, another text arrived.
“I will be back late tonight.”
Looking at her messages, I could not help but laugh.
It was her parents who loved me, never her.
I had always known her parents despised Hayden.
The three of us were high school classmates. Back then, Hayden was a notorious delinquent, yet Nadia was madly in love with him, even skipping her final exams for his sake.
Her parents eventually dragged her home by force and made her repeat her senior year at a different school.
Years later, Nadia and I met on a blind date, and I foolishly assumed they had cut ties.
I never imagined they had remained tangled all these years, growing bolder after she married me under parental pressure.
A sneer formed on my lips as I typed my reply: “We are getting a divorce the moment you get back.”
After hitting send, I went into the bathroom to shower.
When I stepped out, a sharp, stabbing pain tore through my stomach.
My body was simply not used to such spicy food after a decade of avoiding it.
On top of that, my leg had been injured recently in a hit-and-run by a drunk driver, leaving me unable to drive.
Cold sweat poured down my forehead from the intense pain.
I dialed Nadia’s number, but the call rang out with no answer.
At that moment, Hayden’s social feed refreshed with a new post.
It was a photo of Nadia carefully disinfecting a wound on his knee, her face filled with tenderness and worry.
His caption read: “After all these years apart, destiny still brought us back together. Once I make it big, how can I ever repay you, my darling? Shall I give myself to you completely?”
The post showed their faces clearly and immediately caused an uproar among our circle.
Several mutual friends called to ask me what was going on, but I brushed them off with vague replies.
Just then, my assistant called to report that the hit-and-run vehicle had finally been tracked down.
I told him to bring the files over immediately and take me to the hospital.
Before the pain could make me lose consciousness, we finally arrived at the emergency room.
After the doctor finished the examination, the nurse hooked me up to an IV drip.
I opened the folder my assistant had brought.
When I saw the vehicle information in the report, shock hit me.
I compared it to the sports car Hayden had flaunted in his recent videos, and everything clicked.
A man consumed by reckless jealousy, paired with a woman blinded by obsession.
They truly deserved each other.
