Chapter 2

Ivy Reynolds was used to being underestimated. The world saw her as just another journalist, someone who wrote exposés about the powerful and corrupt, but no one truly understood the danger of poking into the underbelly of wealth and privilege. Not until they were caught in the web of lies, manipulation, and power. Her life had been shaped by those dangers, and she was no stranger to the risks that came with exposing the truth.

But tonight was different.

Dominic Blackstone had left an impression on her that she couldn't shake. Despite his polished exterior, there was something raw, almost feral beneath the surface. When he spoke to her, it wasn't the typical condescending politeness she had come to expect from the men in his circle. His words were deliberate, a challenge wrapped in the guise of charm. For the first time in a long while, Ivy found herself questioning the strength of her own resolve.

She had always prided herself on being unaffected by the people she wrote about. They were nothing more than subjects to her-subjects whose flaws she could dissect, whose secrets she could uncover. But Dominic Blackstone wasn't just another powerful man. There was a magnetic force to him, an undercurrent of intensity that drew people in. And despite her best efforts to remain distant, Ivy felt herself responding to it.

Her apartment was silent when she arrived home, save for the hum of the refrigerator and the faint sounds of traffic outside. Ivy tossed her coat over the back of the couch, making her way to the small kitchenette where a bottle of red wine waited for her. She poured herself a glass, the smooth liquid gliding into the crystal glass as she took a deep breath. The night had been exhausting. The glittering ballroom, the high-society faces, the fakeness of it all-she hated it.

And yet, Dominic Blackstone had managed to break through her defenses in a way no one ever had.

She sipped the wine, her thoughts returning to the conversation they had earlier. His confidence, that dangerous edge to his charm, lingered in her mind. Ivy had been determined to remain unaffected, to stay professional. But in the few minutes they had spoken, she had seen a side of him that unsettled her-something far more dangerous than his family's wealth.

Her phone buzzed on the counter, and Ivy glanced down to see an email notification from her editor. She picked it up, quickly reading through the message. It was about the ongoing investigation into the Blackstone Group. The email was brief but to the point: *We need a follow-up, something bigger. Get us closer to the truth. And if possible, we need Blackstone's involvement. No more fluff, Ivy. Make it happen.*

A chill ran down her spine. The pressure was on. The Blackstone empire had been under scrutiny for months, but Ivy knew the stakes had just been raised. This wasn't just about a few shady dealings anymore. Her editor wanted blood.

Her mind raced as she set the phone down. Dominic Blackstone. Her interaction with him had been brief, but it had left her with a sense of unease. She couldn't shake the feeling that he was hiding something. His words had been too deliberate, his interest too calculated. It was as if he had known exactly how to get under her skin, to make her feel something.

Ivy couldn't afford to be distracted by him. She had a job to do, and it was more important than whatever strange hold he seemed to have over her.

Her phone buzzed again, this time with a text from her best friend, Claire.

*Dinner at my place tomorrow night? I need a break from the chaos. You in?*

Ivy smiled, grateful for the distraction. She quickly typed back, agreeing to meet Claire. It would be good to have a night off from work, a chance to decompress. But even as she responded, her mind kept drifting back to the gala, to the sharp intensity in Dominic's eyes.

---

The next evening, Ivy found herself sitting in Claire's cozy apartment, a glass of white wine in her hand as she tried to push thoughts of Dominic Blackstone aside. The apartment was a sanctuary, decorated in soft hues of blue and gray, a stark contrast to the chaotic world Ivy had left behind. Claire was a journalist too, though she specialized in entertainment rather than politics or corporate corruption. They had been friends since their college days, and Claire had always been Ivy's sounding board.

"Something on your mind?" Claire asked, eyeing Ivy over the rim of her own glass.

Ivy sighed, setting her wine down and running a hand through her hair. "I met Dominic Blackstone last night."

Claire raised an eyebrow. "The billionaire heir? The one who runs the Blackstone Group? Isn't he a little... well, out of your league?"

Ivy rolled her eyes. "You know what I mean. He was there, at the gala. He spoke to me."

Claire leaned forward, her interest piqued. "And?"

"I don't know. There's something about him. He's different from the usual rich men I deal with. More dangerous. More... compelling."

Claire's eyes widened slightly. "Dangerous? Ivy, you can't get involved with him. That's like walking into the lion's den."

"I'm not getting involved with him," Ivy said quickly, but even as the words left her mouth, she felt a pang of uncertainty. "I'm just... trying to figure him out. He's hiding something."

Claire's expression softened. "You're really going to go after the Blackstone Group, aren't you? Even after everything you've already uncovered?"

Ivy nodded slowly. "Yes. They're involved in something bigger than anyone realizes. And I'm not backing down."

Claire shook her head, concern etched on her face. "Just be careful, Ivy. These people don't play by the same rules as the rest of us. They'll destroy you without a second thought if they think you're a threat."

Ivy stared into her glass of wine, her fingers tracing the edge of the stem. "I'm not afraid of them."

"Maybe not," Claire said softly. "But that doesn't mean they won't find a way to make you afraid."

The weight of Claire's words settled heavily on Ivy's shoulders, but she didn't show it. She had made her decision. She wasn't going to back down, not now. The Blackstone Group had secrets, and she was going to uncover them-no matter what it took.

---

The following day, Ivy's mind was back on the story, her resolve stronger than ever. She had work to do. She knew where she had to start: the Blackstone Group's connections, their business dealings, their political ties. But she also knew she couldn't ignore the pull that Dominic Blackstone had on her. She had felt it in his gaze, in the way he had spoken to her at the gala.

No matter how much she told herself she wasn't interested, she couldn't ignore the truth. Dominic Blackstone was a puzzle she couldn't resist trying to solve.
