Chapter 3

Ivy's morning began the same as any other. The soft click of the coffee machine brewing the rich dark blend that grounded her to reality. The familiar hum of her apartment, the quiet solitude, and the weight of the day ahead settled over her. She had no time for distractions, no room for hesitation. The Blackstone Group's shadow loomed large, and it was more than just a story now-it was a battleground. She had already committed herself to it. The stakes had risen higher than she had anticipated.

After the gala, she had spent hours going over the Blackstone Group's public filings, press releases, and financial documents. Nothing new had emerged. Nothing that could truly connect them to the deeper, darker deals she suspected existed beneath the surface. But Ivy wasn't a fool. She knew the most valuable truths often hid behind walls of money and power.

By the time she stepped into her office that afternoon, the city was already buzzing with activity. The clamor of the streets filtered through the thick glass windows, but Ivy blocked it out, setting her sights on her computer screen. She opened a fresh document, preparing to type her next article. She had been assigned a follow-up piece on Blackstone's charity gala, which, on the surface, seemed harmless enough. A puff piece, even. But it offered the perfect opportunity to dig deeper, to learn more about the men and women behind the Blackstone name.

Before she could begin, a sharp knock on her office door interrupted her thoughts.

"Come in," Ivy called, her voice steady.

The door creaked open, and Claire stepped inside, carrying two cups of coffee from the café down the street. Her eyes were tired, her face drawn. Life as a journalist was exhausting, but Claire's commitment to her work had never wavered.

"I figured you could use some caffeine," Claire said, handing over one of the cups. "How's it going?"

Ivy accepted the coffee, the warmth of it comforting in the midst of her mounting frustration. "It's going. I'm digging into Blackstone, but nothing concrete yet. I'm starting to wonder if I'm missing something."

Claire perched on the edge of the desk, her expression thoughtful. "You're not missing anything, Ivy. You're just going up against one of the most powerful families in the city. Their empire is built on secrets, manipulation, and carefully crafted facades. You won't break through that easily."

Ivy leaned back in her chair, her fingers tracing the rim of her coffee cup. "I know. But I can't just let it go. There's something off about them-about Dominic."

Claire raised an eyebrow. "Dominic Blackstone? You're not seriously-"

"I'm not saying I'm interested in him, Claire," Ivy interrupted sharply, frustration edging into her tone. "But there's something about him. He's too calm. Too calculated. The way he spoke to me last night-he's hiding something."

"You think he's hiding something because he's attractive?" Claire's tone was teasing, but Ivy could see the genuine concern behind it.

"I don't care about that." Ivy's voice was firm. "It's not about him being attractive or not. It's about the way he manipulates everything around him. His family, the press, the city itself. I can feel it. And I'm going to uncover it."

Claire sighed, shaking her head. "Just don't get too close to him, Ivy. I know you, and you get too wrapped up in things like this. It's dangerous."

"I'm not backing down." Ivy's resolve was ironclad. "I'll figure it out, no matter what it takes."

---

The days passed quickly, each one filled with more questions than answers. Ivy kept her head down, her focus sharpened on the Blackstone Group and its questionable dealings. Her research uncovered more layers of the Blackstone family's empire, from their early investments in real estate to their expansion into international markets. The public-facing side of their business was pristine, but Ivy knew better than to trust appearances. Every industry they were involved in seemed tied to murky connections and suspiciously timed moves that no one else had questioned.

And then, there was Dominic.

Her mind kept circling back to him, even when she told herself she wouldn't. Despite her best efforts, their paths continued to cross, like an invisible thread pulling them together. Every time they met, his gaze lingered just a moment too long, his smile just a touch too sharp. Ivy couldn't shake the feeling that he was playing a game with her-one that she didn't fully understand.

It was on a cold Thursday morning, after another long night of research, that Ivy's world shifted once again. Her phone buzzed with a notification: an invitation to a private dinner hosted by Dominic Blackstone himself.

The invitation came with a simple message: *I think we need to talk.*

Ivy stared at the phone, the words swirling in her mind. She had been expecting something like this, but now that it was here, she found herself at a loss. What did he want? Was it a trap? A test?

The text lingered in her thoughts, her finger hovering over the screen as she contemplated her response. In the end, she chose the only option that made sense: to go. If Dominic Blackstone wanted to meet, she would meet him. But this time, Ivy would be prepared.

---

The evening of the dinner arrived, and Ivy found herself standing in front of the Blackstone mansion, her heart beating slightly faster than usual. The sprawling estate loomed before her, its marble façade glowing under the soft light of the evening. The gates were wide open, and a sleek black car sat parked in front, waiting for her to approach.

A security guard at the entrance nodded at her as she arrived, escorting her inside. The opulence of the Blackstone home took Ivy's breath away. It was everything she had imagined-grandiose, with towering columns and high ceilings. The walls were adorned with priceless artwork, and the floors gleamed with polished marble. A chandelier that could have belonged in a palace hung from the ceiling, casting a soft glow over the space.

Dominic was waiting for her in the grand dining room. His back was to her as he stood near the long, polished table, his hands clasped behind him as he gazed out the window. The moment Ivy entered, he turned to face her, a smile playing at the corners of his lips.

"I'm glad you could make it, Ivy," he said smoothly, his voice a deep, calming presence. "I wasn't sure if you'd take me up on my offer."

Ivy held his gaze, determined not to show any sign of unease. "You're quite persistent, Mr. Blackstone. I'm here now. What did you want to talk about?"

Dominic's eyes twinkled with amusement, though his expression remained neutral. "Please, call me Dominic. This is a private dinner, after all. No need for formalities."

Ivy's jaw tightened slightly, but she nodded. "Fine. Dominic. What's this about?"

He gestured toward the table, where a spread of fine dishes had been laid out-exquisite cuisine that was clearly not intended for someone like her. It was clear this dinner wasn't just about the food. It was a power move, a way to bring her closer, to make her part of his world in a way she had never been before.

"I thought we could talk about business," Dominic said, his tone casual, though Ivy could hear the underlying challenge in his words. "I'm sure you've done your research on the Blackstone Group by now. But there's more to the story than what you've read. More to me, perhaps."

Ivy crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing. "What exactly are you offering, Dominic? A little game of cat and mouse? Or do you want to make a deal?"

Dominic smiled, a small, knowing smirk that made Ivy's pulse quicken. "Maybe both. Maybe neither. But I do think you'll find what I have to say... interesting."

---

Dinner passed in tense silence, each moment fraught with unspoken words. Ivy couldn't ignore the undercurrent of danger in Dominic's presence, nor the way he seemed to read her every move. He didn't need to speak to control the room. His presence alone commanded attention.

Yet, Ivy wasn't easily intimidated. The more she learned, the more she realized how much of a chess game this was-one she intended to win. But in that moment, with the weight of Dominic's gaze fixed on her, Ivy knew this game was far from over.

That's everything available right now.
