Chapter 2

2.

I went home alone. Because of the fire, the production was put on an indefinite hiatus.

As I sat on the couch in a daze, a familiar mechanical chime echoed in my head.

The system that had been dormant for five years had finally reactivated.

【Ding! Host, system has detected that the story’s protagonist has gained self-awareness.】

【I must warn you: the male lead’s affection for you is plummeting rapidly. Once it hits zero, you will vanish from this world in the most painful manner possible.】

Just then, Damian walked through the front door.

He kept his distance. The moment our eyes met, he quickly looked away.

In the past, whenever he came home, I would cling to him like a koala, and he would shower me with endless affection.

Now, we sat at opposite ends of the couch in complete silence. Neither of us spoke first.

Just when I felt like time had frozen, Damian finally broke the stillness.

“I’m sorry.”

Those three words made my eyes sting fiercely.

I took a deep breath, forcing a fragile smile. “Why are you apologizing?”

He let out a heavy sigh, looking at me with a grim expression. “Aubrey, let’s get a divorce.”

Five years of devotion vanished like a burst bubble.

To put Sienna’s mind at ease, he wanted to cast me aside as quickly as possible.

The word “divorce” fell from his lips as though it were nothing more than a casual remark about the weather.

Before I could even respond, Damian placed a folder on the coffee table in front of me. His tone was chilly. “Here is the settlement agreement.”

“Since I brought it up, you can keep the mansion and the cars. I’ll also transfer fifty million dollars into your account as compensation.”

Ha. Was I supposed to praise him for being generous?

I lowered my gaze to the papers and asked softly, “What’s the reason? Didn’t you say you loved me?”

Damian fell silent.

Looking at the man I had loved for five years, I remembered when the system declared my mission a success and offered to take me back to my original world.

Back then, I chose to stay without a second thought.

Because I loved Damian.

Even now, I didn’t regret my choice, but this time, I decided to let him go.

I signed my name across the divorce papers with a steady hand. Passing the folder back, I smiled faintly. “I wish you and Sienna a long, happy life together.”

Damian froze, looking at me in shock. “You… you knew?”

I didn’t answer him.

I could have told him, “Not only do I know, but if you choose her, you will never see me again. Would you still pick Sienna then?”

I could have asked him, “Did you ever really love me? Were those five years just scripted lines for you?”

In the end, I said nothing.

I didn’t ask a single question.
