Chapter 2

"The cafeteria food is enough. If we get caught with snacks, we'll get demerits!"

She glanced at our roommates. "I can't control others, but we need to be careful as freshmen. We can't afford to make mistakes."

She reached for the last box of snacks in my hand. "We're best friends, so of course I care about you. Trust me. I'll return these for you."

The girl who'd given me the snacks looked annoyed, but hesitant to say anything because of Sarah's supposed friendship with me.

I snatched the snacks back, rolling my eyes. "Mind your own business."

I thanked the girl and then shared some of my own snacks with everyone except Sarah.

Previously, I would have shared everything with her. Seeing me deliberately exclude her, Sarah looked embarrassed and opened her mouth to speak.

I smiled sweetly at the others. "Sarah doesn't like snacks. Please don't share with her from now on."

Having witnessed Sarah's bizarre behavior, they readily agreed.

Sarah, already disliked on the first day, bit her lip and sulked while unpacking.

When classes started, Sarah tried to sit next to me.

I'd already saved seats for my roommates, so she reluctantly sat behind me.

However, on the day of the TOEFL registration, I arrived to find my usual seat taken.

Sarah waved enthusiastically. "Ashley, over here!"

I frowned, remembering that my roommate, Olivia, was absent that day.

Throughout the class, Sarah kept glancing at my phone.

When there were ten minutes left before registration, everyone else took out their phones to log in.

I could feel Sarah's tension, her glances becoming more frequent.

But I remained still, no matter how much she stared.

Seeing that she wasn't touching her phone, I asked, "Aren't you registering for the TOEFL?"

Sarah replied earnestly, "Class isn't over yet. We can register after class. We should turn off our phones during class."

"Ashley, we're here to learn, not to get distracted."

Despite her words, her eyes held a look of determination as she glanced at her own phone.
