Chapter 1

My cat was missing.

Then, Grant's first love suddenly posted a few photos on her Instagram.

The markings on the snow-white fur were unmistakable. I knew in an instant it was my Luna.

I tried to get her back, but when Grant found out, he shoved me hard.

"It's just a damn cat, Elara. Is all this drama really necessary?"

I slammed into a marble pillar. A sharp pain shot through me, and blood began to flow down my legs like a river.

The moment I was lifted into the ambulance, my heart finally died.

Inside the ambulance, I lay there feeling like a ghost.

The bleeding just wouldn't stop.

Grant's face was twisted with guilt as he kept apologizing. "Elara, I'm so sorry. I didn't think it would be this bad."

A piercing pain shot through my abdomen, making me shiver.

But no physical pain could compare to the ache in my chest.

When we reached the hospital, the news was exactly what I feared. The baby was gone.

After the procedure to clear the remains, I touched my flat stomach. Tears pooled in my eyes and rolled down my cheeks.

I had waited five years for this child.

I struggled to get pregnant after we got married. The doctors told me my ovaries hadn't developed properly.

Conceiving naturally was almost impossible.

I endured hundreds of injections and cried a literal ocean of tears to finally have this baby.

Now, everything was gone.

Grant walked over with a bowl of porridge, trying to feed me.

I closed my eyes and shook my head.

"Elara, you just finished surgery. Your body is weak. You need to eat something."

He pushed the spoon toward my face, trying to force it into my mouth.

I swiped his hand away, the spoon clattering to the floor. "Leave me alone! I don't want anything!" I screamed.

The hot porridge splashed onto Grant's designer shirt. He jumped back, startled by the heat.

He slammed the bowl down on the nightstand, his anger bubbling under the surface.

His voice dropped to a low, menacing growl. "Elara Miller, don't push it."

"I'm hurting over the baby too. Do you really have to act like this? Are you still blaming me?"

I couldn't believe my ears. Did this man really think he wasn't responsible?

"Grant, you gave my cat to Lydia. You pushed me into a pillar and caused my miscarriage. Who else am I supposed to blame?"

My words felt like they were written in blood. My heart was breaking all over again.

Grant's expression turned cold. He let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Elara, have a little heart, okay?"

"I was worried the cat would affect your pregnancy. That's why I gave her to Lydia to watch. Was it really so wrong for you to try and snatch her back like a maniac?"

Had he forgotten? Luna had been with me for ten years. She was my family.

I was beyond furious, my entire body shaking. "Did I give you permission? What right do you have to give my cat to Lydia York? And who told you that being pregnant means I can't have a cat?"

"I was just being cautious. Besides, Lydia loves animals. She's the best person to look after Luna. You're being completely unreasonable."

Looking at the man standing there making excuses, I felt like I had been plunged into ice water. I realized then that this life had to end.

I dropped my head, too exhausted to argue anymore.

The ward door suddenly swung open. Lydia York skipped into the room.

"Elara, I'm so sorry about the baby. It's all my fault. I was the one who suggested Grant let me take Luna. Please don't be mad at him."
