Chapter 2
2
Lydia's big eyes were filled with tears. She looked like she was about to crumble from her own feigned guilt.
Grant immediately moved to comfort her. "Lydia, I know you meant well. This was just an accident. It has nothing to do with you."
Lydia took the opportunity to bury herself in Grant's arms. she looked like a tiny, frightened bird.
"Grant, I know you're the best, but I'm so scared Elara will hate me."
Grant glanced at me and then quickly looked away. "It's fine. She won't blame you. I'm here."
They looked so cozy together. If you didn't know better, you'd think Lydia was the one who just lost a child.
I forced myself up, trembling as I walked toward her. I didn't say a word. I just swung my hand and slapped her across the face.
Grant instantly pulled her behind him, shielding her.
"Elara, are you insane? You lost the baby, so you're taking it out on Lydia?"
"If you've got a problem, take it out on me!"
Lydia held her cheek, weeping like a professional actress.
I wanted to fight back, but a sudden cramp in my stomach made me double over. I collapsed onto the floor, clutching my belly.
Grant instinctively reached out to help me.
Lydia whispered softly, "When my sister was three months along, she had a loss too. She was out of the hospital in half a day. The doctor said the baby isn't even fully formed yet, so it doesn't really hurt the mother."
Grant's hand froze mid-air.
His face turned stern. He clearly thought I was faking my pain for attention.
"Elara, we can have another baby. But what you did was wrong. Apologize to Lydia. Now."
I dug my nails into my palms. My chest heaved.
I stared at the two of them, finally realizing how blind I had been all these years.
I clenched my fists and screamed, "Both of you, get the hell out!"
Lydia shrank further into Grant's chest. "Grant, I think I have a fever. I feel so dizzy."
Grant touched her forehead, his face full of concern. "Let's go. Ignore this crazy woman. I'll go get you some medicine."
With that, Grant led Lydia out of the room, his arm wrapped tightly around her.
I had suffered for five years just to have a child with him.
Now that the baby was gone, he called me a crazy woman.
Maybe I was crazy. Crazy for ever falling in love with him.
I had even given up my acting career just to be a good wife.
The room began to spin. I fainted right there on the floor.
When I woke up, the nurse nearby looked at me with pity.
"Where is your husband? You just had surgery. You shouldn't be alone."
A bitter smile touched my lips. My phone buzzed with a notification. It was Lydia's new post on her private feed.
"Grant is so sweet. He was worried I'd get cold during my IV drip, so he warmed the tube with his own hands. I'm so touched."
The photo showed Lydia's slender wrist with a needle in it. Grant was sitting beside her, holding the tube with such tenderness in his eyes.
I tapped the like button. Then, I made a post of my own.
"On the day of my miscarriage, my husband is busy warming an IV for his first love. So incredibly thoughtful."
I attached a photo of my surgery discharge papers and the screenshot of Lydia's post.
Within a minute, Lydia commented.
"Elara, you've got it all wrong. Grant was just worried about me being alone. I'll tell him to go back soon."
Seconds later, Grant's call came through.
